The Derry native performs That's Rich in the second semi-final this Thursday but criticised the lack of airtime for it.

“People are definitely taking a massive liking to this song, I think it’s because of the tongue-in-cheek nature. “Maybe we need to send something completely different and new and fresh that catches people’s attention. “I think what’s different about this year is we’ve sent something completely different. “People are excited this year and the North, essentially, can vote which means we’re in an even better position again so the song’s getting a lot of recognition. This is a really good level that I’m really proud of. Radio is a really hard one to crack and I feel like Eurovision is going to make people more aware of who I am.

Live Blog: First Semi-Final 2022 (Eurovision.tv)

Welcome to the Eurovision.tv Live Blog for the First Semi-Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. This Live Blog updates automatically.

It’s almost time for the #soundofbeauty to begin… Been to the bathroom? The Sound of Beauty begins – Italian music and dance come together with elements of air, water, earth and fire, finally giving birth to the sun as the focal point of the Eurovision stage. Albania’s Ronela Hajati is up first – we saw her rehearse in a two different outfit options, and for the Semi-Final she’s gone with the silver one she wore in the second rehearsal. There’s a lot of love for this in the Delegation Bubble, and it’s reasonable to assume that Oleh’s mum is extremely proud. It’s given us two Semis that feel quite different – we’ve got a lot of the ballads in SF1, and more of the uptempo bops in SF2. But what’s most notable is the huge spectrum of musical genres in this year’s contest – it’s got folk, pop, dance, hiphop and plenty of rock, and pretty much everything in between. We’ll know in a couple of hours… Time to wave your glowsticks for our first big EDM banger of the night, sung by LUM!X and Pia Maria from inside an actual halo. Like Portugal earlier, this has a really chilled, folky vibe and it’s lovely to hear a song sung entirely in Icelandic. The staging is beautiful too, making great use of the arena lights to create a stunning sunrise. Amanda’s ghostly white dress and the staging of broken chairs makes this one of the more haunting stagings of this competition, and it feels very much like a song for our times. Tonight Diodato has the opportunity to sing Fai Rumore (make noise) in front of a packed PalaOlimpico, and it’s an equally powerful moment. It’s going to be aaaages before we know which half of the Grand Final each country is performing in, because we have to get through press questions for ten different countries and they haven’t started yet.

Eurovision 2022: Topless hunks, writhing women and Marty Whelan ... (The Irish Times)

'I think music is over now.' Patrick Freyne watches the first semifinal of Eurovision.

Their song, Give that Wolf a Banana, contains the refrain of “Yum, yum, yum” and a verse that goes: “Not sure I told you but I really like your teeth, That hairy coat of yours with nothing underneath, Not sure you have a name so I will call you Keith.” I really respect this. The second semifinal is on Thursday. Armenia “I will keep up with the show.” “Boys do cry,” he sings, standing in the middle of a broken heart, with another broken heart projected on his face in case you missed the point. There is always a metal act at the Eurovision. It’s the law. They are accompanied by a spacemen. She sings mournfully, like a particularly glamorous school principal driven to despair by budget cuts. The Eurovision is a miraculous thing. Switzerland’s Marius Bear (not a real bear) has spent years brooding over the Cure’s ode to male stoicism, Boys Don’t Cry. Marius Bear loves crying and has written a sweetly swelling torch song to that effect. Mia Dimsic from Croatia sings Guilty with a guitar around her neck and three dancers dramatically enacting a love triangle nearby. “I will never let it go,” they sing. In your household do you stand and salute when you hear the Eurovision anthem?

Eurovision 2022: Ukraine presumed favourites after qualifying for final (BBC News)

Kalush Orchestra, who are tipped to win the song contest, secured an easy victory in the first semi-final.

Ten more acts will progress to the main competition after Thursday's second semi-final. "For our country it is so important to have victories in all ways," he said. The other countries whose journey ended on Tuesday were Albania, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Denmark. "We were just focusing on the message of the song, and we wanted to bring hope to people that are going through hard times, like Ukraine, and all of us that have been struggling through Covid." The chorus of the song featured a mournful, meditative repetition of the word "saudade" - which doesn't have a direct translation in English, but which the singer says represents "the desire to have someone back when you know you can't". But the competition kicked off in earnest with Ronela Hajati - Albania's answer to Madonna, whose song Sekret was about a romantic tryst with a boy "who came from the mountains".
