Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland: League One playoff semi-final ... (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Sunderland lead 1-0 after the first leg. Who will join Wycombe in the final? Find out with Rob Smyth.

Right here, right now, their sole ambition is to return to the Championship. “[Will we see a different Wednesday from the first leg?] I think we have to. I know there’s Premier Passions but I’d love to read the full story, particularly the second spell in the Premier League. I interviewed Niall Quinn a few years ago and he spoke with such fondness about that period, on and off the field. It was a tough game up there but we’re at home and we’ve had a good couple of days. He controls the ball on the chest and hits a sweet overhead kick that is too close to Patterson. Either side and that might have been in. On that note, can any Sunderland fans recommend a book on the Peter Reid years? The referee has a word and leaves it at that. We have a cliché quota, you see, so I try not to waste any before the big kick-off. I haven’t had chance to start it yet but it looks great, and I know he’s interviewed a number of the central characters. 25 min Pritchard’s inswinging free-kick is backheaded over the bar by Batth, a decent effort under pressure. 36 min Bannan’s free-kick is headed over by Dean, who met the ball on the run near the penalty spot. Oh I’m not denying that these are two huge clubs, it’s the cliché part I was trying to avoid.

Ex-Sunderland goalkeeper Max Stryjek will "probably" leave Livingston this summer, according to his manager.

"I do believe Max is probably not going to be here, because there is a good bit of interest, so I've got to do what's right for the squad and I think, from what I've seen of Ivan, he's more than capable of being the number one next season." Martindale added: "The unique selling point for anyone who comes into our club is to try and get themselves a move to England or to the Old Firm, or failing that, to the Edinburgh two or Aberdeen, where the wages are substantially more than you're going to get at Livingston. - 3Sheffield Wednesday 1 Sunderland 1: Story of the night as Patrick Roberts goal sends Cats to League One play-off final at Wembley

He doesn't leave anything untouched and works hard to give us the best platform to perform." "Wednesday is a massive club and the fans deserve to see their team playing higher - but you have to earn that. It was a big game, a difficult game; we switched off once in the match and it cost us a goal and that was disappointing because throughout the game I thought we were excellent. We put our bodies on the line, and when we show our quality, we can punish teams. Wednesday's threat grew throughout the second half and finally pressure told on 74 minutes as they found a way to level the tie. They did, in truth, struggle to create anything really clear-cut in the first half, though.

Patrick Roberts never thought he would be playing League One football when he signed for Manchester City as a teenager. At least now his and Sunderland's ...

Owls skipper Barry Bannan is said to be the highest-paid player in League One. It took 75 minutes for the midfielder to produce a pass to justify his top-flight salary, but it was worth its weight in all that gold. Sunderland, by contrast, used the backing of their capacity crowd to attack their opponents during Friday's first leg. All it took was the injustice of a soft free-kick to stoke the home crowd early on, igniting an atmosphere fuelled by desperation. What is it about the late drama of last-four ties? That is what play-off semi-finals produce, a unique sound akin to a frenzy. At least now his and Sunderland's resurrection is only one match away from the Championship.

The proud Alex Neil verdict Sunderland fans will love after stunning ... (Sunderland Echo)

Alex Neil spoke of his pride in his Sunderland team after they snatched a place at Wembley with a stoppage-time winner against Sheffield Wednesday.

“I felt if I changed it, I might dilute what we're doing. In football you’re quickly forgotten, and that’s not lost on me. “If I'm honest I'm just so pleased for the players, because they do get written off. “I feel really privileged to have been given an opportunity and I really want to repay that by delivering success. So they can put that in their pipe. “I didn't think we deserved to trail, and I don’t think anyone I just said to the lads, ‘it’s a moment, it’s done, it’s gone’. And I thought we responded really, really well.

Under Alex Neil, Sunderland believe again (The Athletic)

After four years in League One, Sunderland are heading to the play-off final in a bid to heal the scars of the past.

Gregory, Saido Berahino and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing were just three of the signings that were supposed to split Wednesday from the League One crowd. That brings Sunderland and Neil to the baggage they must shed 11 days from now. For all they had finished the season as impressively as Sunderland, they were contained too easily. Sheffield Wednesday, meanwhile, can now only hope they are not in for the same wait. A 6-0 defeat away to Bolton Wanderers in late January, the result that cost Johnson his job, was the final proof that Sunderland’s board had been waiting for. He’s been a joy to work with but I’m sure he’ll agree: the main job isn’t done yet.” It was the ninth goal scored by Neil’s team after the 82nd minute in their last 12 games. A team that had been coveting automatic promotion no longer even had a foothold in the play-off places. There was little to split the fallen clubs but Sunderland, set up astutely by Neil, had the edge. Forward Lee Gregory might have levelled up the tie with 16 minutes remaining but Sunderland came again through Roberts, just as a sold-out Hillsborough had reason to bounce. Neil, almost single-handedly, has instilled the discipline and drive to transform an ailing team’s fortunes. But then came the run to change an entire season’s course, ensuring Sunderland’s fate will now be decided in a Wembley play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers on May 21.
