Wells Fargo Championship final round preview: Rory McIlroy in the ... (Planet Sport)

Rory McIlroy moved 38 spots up the leaderboard on moving day, but leader Keegan Bradley is in a strong position at TPC Potomac.

Hahn has made just one top five - and only two top 10s - since October 2020. He was a winner earlier this season at the Fortinet Championship but is looking for a first top five since then. Two of those were won by 54-hole leaders, the third saw David Lingmerth win from four back when in tied eighth. "I played really well," he said. "When the conditions get like this, I find a sense of calm just because I'm sort of worried about other things, keeping my clubs dry and my bag dry," Bradley explained. "It's been the tougher nine for me this week," he explained.

Only 2 players have done that on the PGA Tour since (2010 Carl Pettersson in Canada, 2016 Brandt Snedeker at Torrey). May 8, 2022 Should be a nice day of volatility at the top of the board, which will make for an exciting ending to this tournament. Homa gives himself a great look at birdie, and we could be tied here in about five minutes. pic.twitter.com/mkNGzmALpS May 8, 2022 Feels a little like Homa is playing for a spot on the Presidents Cup team today. Has a win where the thing is being played. pic.twitter.com/qwiHcmqwGU May 8, 2022 He's up two on Keegan and four on Rory with 12 holes to go. Nasty weather conditions at TPC Potomac has created a lot of difficulty for golfers at the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship. Couple that with a new course -- this Tour stop is normally played at Quail Hollow Club -- and the results have been unpredictable from day to day. In any case, the unpredictable nature of this tournament should lead to an exciting finish on Sunday. Golf betting tips: Final-round preview and best bets for Wells Fargo ... (Sportinglife.com)

Martin Mathews looks ahead to the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship and is backing Max Homa to seal the deal.

Alongside Young on the leaderboard there are six other players starting on 2 under including Rory McIlroy. The defending champion’s race looked run when he bogeyed his first two holes on Saturday but he bounced back superbly to post a 68 and he will now fancy his chances of bagging this title once again. With three each-way places on offer we have a nice safety net and the 40/1 makes plenty of appeal. Lahiri has produced some strong stuff of late, a run which began with his out of the blue performance at The Players; however he started to show some frustration as he struggled down the stretch yesterday. The gritty Matt Fitzpatrick who sits alone on 3 under in fifth place is tempting. This week, however, golf being the game it is, he has left his season's ranking of 151st on the greens behind him to rank first with the flat stick. The rain is set to ease off but even cooler conditions and gusting winds will make conditions really tough again and Homa’s calm temperament looks perfect for the challenge.

How to Watch Wells Fargo Championship, Final Round: Live Stream ... (Sports Illustrated)

McIlroy moved up the leaderboard in the third round with a 68 (-2) behind four birdies and two bogeys, all on the back nine.

He has shot par or better in all three rounds as one of the most consistent golfers in the field this week. He had the second-best overall round and was one of only four golfers to shoot under par along with the leader, Bradley (-3), Cameron Young and Nick Taylor (-1). While there are several golfers that can make a massive, historic comeback and have the skill to do so, the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship from Potomac, Maryland, is really down to Keegan Bradley (-8) and Max Homa (-6). There are two others tied at -4 and one of the best golfers of the past 15 years lurking on championship Sunday today.

“I definitely knew I was capable of being a regular PGA Tour player, but all of a sudden last year I get in the top 50 in the world and you start looking around and it’s a new crop of people and you start thinking to myself, Am I as good as these guys? And then I want to be top 10 in the world, play Presidents Cup, play Ryder Cups. Am I good enough to do that? I tried to walk around this week believing that and faking it a little bit until I made it.” “It was choppy and then I had a couple good stretches but I had a chance there at the end, so I’m proud of that aspect of it. With growing confidence, he looks like he’ll continue a steady march to the elite level of the game. Overall it’s been a good weekend, a decent week, something to build on going into the PGA (Championship in two weeks). No complaints with the game. But Homa birdied nine and 10 and took a three-shot lead when Bradley doubled the 11th. In other words, as the golf cliché says, he plodded his way through the miserable elements one shot at a time and ended up with the fewest shots to win his fourth PGA Tour title and second Wells Fargo Championship. A two-shot swing evened things on the seventh hole and Bradley took the lead with a birdie on the eighth. He shot a 72 to fall into a tie for second at 6 under. Two solid pars later, Homa signed for a 2-under-par 68 to finish at 8 under, two shots clear of the field. I knew he was never going to go away and I just tried to keep hitting good shots.

Losing 2 strokes on the green and is only two back. His 0.27 strokes gained off the tee on that shot were his most on any drive today. Tenth in strokes-gained putting on the week, the return to bent grass treated Fowler well as he gears up for the PGA Championship. The lone major championship he has qualified for this season, he will look to follow up his 2021 performance at Kiawah Island which saw him finish in a tie for 8th. "I got a good life and I'm playing some good golf. 5. Rory McIlroy: A month removed from competition, McIlroy began his Wells Fargo Championship in a flurry and looked as if he would be a major factor over the weekend. Combined with his affinity for difficult conditions, Fitzpatrick could be an intriguing option in two weeks at Southern Hills -- and even more so for the U.S. Open at The Country Club, the site of his U.S. Amateur triumph in 2013. Yet that inner belief is continuing to grow, and his performance on the greens of TPC Potomac may be the perfect encapsulation of Homa's rise in the world of golf. Soon, pundits and peers won't be calling Homa a "top-10 ball-striker", but rather a top-10 player in the game. The 31-year-old may not quite be there yet, but he is certainly on his way. Homa lost nearly two strokes to the field on the greens on his opening nine on Thursday, and frustration and doubt could have easily creeped into the back of his mind. Obviously it's still new, I wouldn't say I've mastered it by any means, but just getting a little bit better every day at home, really grinding, making sure I'm practicing the percentages and little things like that." Now a two-time winner this season, Homa joins the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Hideki Matsuyama, Cameron Smith and Sam Burns as a multiple-time winner.
