Manchester City bounced back from their European heartbreak to move a step closer to retaining the Premier League title by thrashing Newcastle United 5-0.

The second goal came following a corner seven minutes before the break. Cancelo showed great awareness himself to head back across goal and Sterling dived in to head home. With that City appeared to break the spirit of Newcastle and the home side took firm control of the game with a third just after the hour.

Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League after easing to a 5-0 win over Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium.

Dias’ follow up deflects back off the goalkeeper to Laporte who bundles into an empty net. Cancelo heads Gundogan's ball back across goal and picks out Sterling, who nods home from close range. It was no surprise, then, that a third was not too far away as Rodri brilliantly headed home Kevin De Bruyne’s corner at the near post. MANCHESTER CITY: Ederson 6, Cancelo 7, Dias 6, Laporte 7, Zinchenko 7, De Bruyne 9, Rodri 7, Gundogan 8, Sterling 7, Jesus 6, Grealish 6. City were starting to turn the screw though and took the lead on 19 minutes as Sterling nodded home after Cancelo had headed Ilkay Gundogan’s brilliant ball back across goal. From then on, the hosts never looked back, dominating possession and controlling the game comfortably.

Fernandinho has backed youngsters CJ Egan-Riley and Lucas Mbete to perform if required as Manchester City seek to retain the Premier League.

This is what we are trying to do, focus on ourselves but I thought it was a great response after defeat in Madrid, especially for our fans and ourselves because when you lose a match like this the confidence can go a little bit down. “Yes, it was a great response but at the same time we are focusing on ourselves and know the title is in our hands,” said the Brazilian. “It doesn’t matter what they [Liverpooll] do over there, we have to keep going. City set the tone for the sleeper hold that they put on the second half by gorging on 99 per cent of the possession in the opening eight minutes. He almost redeemed himself by clawing the loose ball away from Ruben Dias but it broke to Laporte who had a tap-in. Newcastle flickered again in the 24th minute when Jamal Lascelles headed a corner goalwards and watched the ball hit Bruno Guimarães, who was offside. He drove with the ball at his feet, leaving black-and-white shirts in his wake, while his passing was the classic mix of fizz and precision. Guardiola had said beforehand that the mood at the club was much better than it had been on Saturday, which was better again than the Friday, although what happened at Anfield was plainly a bigger healer than time. The competition is the truest measure of a team over the course of a season and, if City could pull it off, again, then how could they feel hollow?

Dias, Walker and Stones all ruled out for the season as City move three points clear of Liverpool.

“What happened with Liverpool and today makes Wednesday an absolute final, final for us,” Guardiola said. Maybe they have more supporters all around the world and in England maybe more support Liverpool than us. “Ruben, Kyle and John are out for the season,” he said.
