Man. City vs Newcastle - Match thread: Win one, screw them up (Coming Home Newcastle)

Manchester City are hosting Newcastle at the Etihad after having a great night of sleep. That's because of Liverpool's slippage against Tottenham on late ...

The last time the lads defeated Manchester City was back in Jan. 2019 when they dumped a couple on Guardiola’s side while only getting scored on one time themselves. Newcastle enters Sunday pretty much in the same vein they did last Saturday against Liverpool. There is nothing to lose today and they learned something against the Reds a week ago: get rich or die trying. This is clearly Manchester City’s toughest game of their remaining ones even though they will have some room for error after Liverpool's draw against Tottenham yesterday. City missed on winning a Premier League game for the last time on Feb. 19 when they fell 2-3 to Tottenham of all teams. The Citizens are playing for nothing more than the Premier League this season after getting eliminated by Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-finals and by Real Madrid last Wednesday in the UCL semi-finals stage too. That’s because of Liverpool's slippage against Tottenham on late Saturday, as the Reds couldn’t get more than one point from their home game against the Spurs. City is the obvious favorite to get the win here, but it wouldn’t be the first time they’d have lost points against a lesser side.

Man City vs Newcastle LIVE updates (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City host Newcastle in the Premier League, looking to bounce back from defeat to Real Madrid and react to Liverpool's draw with Tottenham.

It's half time in the WSL, and City are two-up at Reading and heading for a Champions League spot. That puts United and City level on points, but City still have an eight-goal cushion on goal difference. But it's not what we wanted, we have to deal with it and we will." City are currently goalless away at Reading, but there's drama at Chelsea as United have twice gone ahead and currently lead 2-1. The Blues started today two points ahead of United, with superior goal difference, so simply have to match United's result at Chelsea - who must win to be Champions. But it should be remembered that when that huge disappointment happened, the Blues were two points behind leaders Liverpool with a game in hand and faced a game against Spurs, again, a few days later. The chance to go three points clear is too good to pass up, and City usually bounce back well. If they are still on a low from Wednesday night, that could easily transmit itself to the pitch. He has Micah Richards next to him and Gary Neville is already busy filming from the sidelines on another big day in the title race. "We have the Premier League to go and play for now. “I have lost quite a few finals in my time and a few important games and that was right up there. But he perhaps may have recovered better than some others who have had to endure more pain in that competition.

Manchester City vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League team news ... (The Independent)

Pep Guardiola's side are looking to bounce back from the crushing Champions League semi-final defeat to Real Madrid midweek.

Newcastle United have taken only two points here in 16 previous visits, but can they throw a spanner in the works today? Dubravka never troubled in the visitors’ goal. Allan-Saint Maximin breaks free on the right-hand side after a swift counter-attack but his ball across towards Miguel Almiron is blocked. Bruno Guimaraes is looking to break forward whenever he picks up the ball in a central area. The moment we win the Champions League it will be because of the money we spend. Pep Guardiola’s side were left devastated after Real Madrid’s shocking late comeback at the Bernabeu to eliminate them from the Champions League in the semi-finals midweek, but the Cityzens have been gifted a boost by rivals Liverpool, who slipped up at home to Tottenham, droping two precious points in the 1-1 draw to hand them the initiative in the title race.

Minute-by-minute report: Can Manchester City leapfrog Liverpool at the top of the Premier League with a win over in-form Newcastle? Find out with Rob Smyth.

Hair of the dog. More hair of the dog. But it may well stiffen their domestic resolve, as it did three years ago when they recovered from a traumatic Champions League defeat to Spurs to win their last five league games and hold off a rampant Liverpool. The pressure’s on us today as well – we’ve got high expectations of ourselves and we want to come here and give a good performance. De Bruyne, on the left, produces a lovely left-footed cross to find Cancelo in space at the far post. Four FPL-busting changes for City from the Bernabeu nightmare. In fact, as I type, a little box on Sky Sports tell us that Newcastle have had 57 per cent of the possession so far. 34 min City open Newcastle up with a beautiful passing move on the left. I miss the simplicity of the old days, when Smirnoff and Campari hoardings sat side by side with an understated dignity. 32 min De Bruyne, in the inside-right channel, lifts an unbelievable cross/pass over Lascelles to find Jesus at the far post. Last year City won the league and made it to the European final, losing 1-0 to another extremely strong team (and w his best player leaving injured. 46 min City begin the second half.

We've been saying this every Saturday and Sunday for what seems like forever now, but this really could be a pivotal day in the title race. 15th minute: Plenty of people think City's occasional weakness in front of goal will be solved by the arrival of a big-name striker, but that's another glorious chance to fall to another member of the back four. Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Tottenham at Anfield on Saturday means a win for Pep Guardiola's men will put them three points clear with three games to play. The champions looking to get out of the blocks quickly. It's party time up in the north east, with relegation fears long gone and a bright future in prospect under Eddie Howe. 2nd minute: Nervous moments there for the hosts as Laporte mistakenly boots the ball at Gundogan, who then loses his footing to be disposessed on halfway. Sterling plays in his teammate to draw a sharp save from Dubravka at his near post. Ederson then nearly made a complete hash of the resulting free-kick. Guardiola flaps his arms in a sort of Big Bird impression. Dias lumps a ball in Sterling's general direction and Newcastle come away with it. Anyway, despite those desperate odds, he City midfielder gamely keeps up with the flying winger, who runs out of pitch and falls over.

That goal means that City are now ahead of Liverpool in terms of goal difference - could that prove crucial come 22 May?

Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Fabian Schar are on the bench after recent injuries. Luckily, for City, the attempt is straight at Ederson in the hosts' goal. They look composed with the ball and organised without it. Here's a stat - Newcastle have enjoyed 57 per cent possession to City's 43 per cent. The wing back heads it first time across goal and Sterling meets it with his head to give Dubravka no chance in the Newcastle goal. Jesus has the ball in the inside left channel, he holds it up well before playing De Bruyne in on the overlap. City seeing most of the ball at the moment. Bruno was offside when the initial header was won, however. Gundogan lets fly from 30 yards - it's a pure strike that only just goes wide. Newcastle, on the other hand, are happy to sit back. Gary Neville, on Sky Sports comms, makes the point that the £100 million man will learn he has to be in those positions next year, in much the way that Sterling has. Grealish isn't there and Newcastle breathe a sigh of relief.

Manchester City host Newcastle in the Premier League, looking to bounce back from defeat to Real Madrid and react to Liverpool's draw with Tottenham.

"We show the personality we have after the defeat. Dan Burn gets a booking for bringing down Aymeric Laporte, but the ball wasn't in play so no penalty. Guardiola clearly taking nothing to chance despite the scoreline. The spirit is still there from the Newcastle fans but their players look like they would be quite happy for this match to end now. Three points upfront, nine points to play, 4 goals ahead on goal difference Another final Wednesday, another team we suffer a lot in the last years since Nuno took over and now Bruno." They've now scored more than Liverpool and have a better goal difference. We bounced back perfectly, stuck together as a team in the last few days which was needed. On the pitch, though, City gave themselves a huge boost with a big win that gave them a three point lead and four-goal advantage in goal difference over Liverpool. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring, before Aymeric Laporte poked home. "We knew it would be pressure on us today, especially after what happened in midweek. They have a chance at 3-0, after we score two goals. One of the best groups ever I train in my life." Walker limped off in Madrid and had an ice pack around his ankle, while Stones travelled but wasn't fit enough to make the squad.

DAZN subscribers can watch every single Premier League game in 2021/22 – and it gets better. If you pick up a fuboTV subscription for the games not on Peacock Premium, you'll be able to watch every game. To get around that, all you have to do is get a Virtual Private Network (VPN), assuming it complies with your broadcaster’s T&Cs. A VPN creates a private connection between your device and t'internet, meaning the service can’t work out where you are and won't automatically block the service you've paid for. Newcastle will be unable to call upon the services of Isaac Hayden, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis, as they seek to spoil City’s title tilt. City cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves. Once the tie went into extra time, there was only ever going to be one winner – and Karim Benzema made sure of that with a penalty in the 95th minute.

Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League after easing to a 5-0 win over Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium.

Dias’ follow up deflects back off the goalkeeper to Laporte who bundles into an empty net. Cancelo heads Gundogan's ball back across goal and picks out Sterling, who nods home from close range. It was no surprise, then, that a third was not too far away as Rodri brilliantly headed home Kevin De Bruyne’s corner at the near post. MANCHESTER CITY: Ederson 6, Cancelo 7, Dias 6, Laporte 7, Zinchenko 7, De Bruyne 9, Rodri 7, Gundogan 8, Sterling 7, Jesus 6, Grealish 6. City were starting to turn the screw though and took the lead on 19 minutes as Sterling nodded home after Cancelo had headed Ilkay Gundogan’s brilliant ball back across goal. From then on, the hosts never looked back, dominating possession and controlling the game comfortably.
