During fight week, UFC president Dana White suggested that the loser of Cerrone vs. Cerrone had said the fight demanded a bigger stage than the UFC Apex but his illness could potentially push it back to the original date. The planned UFC 274 lightweight battle between Donald Cerrone and Joe Lauzon has been scrapped hours before the fighters were set to make their cage walk.

The 39-year-old veteran was scheduled to return from a one-year layoff on Saturday, in a lightweight bout against Joe Lauzon at UFC 274 inside Footprint Center.

He had not fought in front of fans since January 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He felt ill the following morning and was pulled from the event after UFC physicians checked him. Cerrone (36-16) had been in good spirits all fight week and showed a lot of emotion talking about the opportunity to fight in front of his two sons with fans in attendance.

Lauzon hasn’t fought in two and a half years and has been away from mixed martial arts to focus on running his gym. He was knocked out in the first round of his last fight against Alex Morono in May of 2021. He knocked out Jonathan Pearce in the first round, only 1:33 into the match. Oliveira was stripped of the title on Friday after he failed to make weight, and now Gaethje is the only one of the two eligible to win the title in Saturday’s fight. UFC 274 is set to get going this weekend from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. A five-bout main card is highlighted by two title fights, including Charles Oliveira vs. Khaos Williams and Randy Brown will replace this fight to kick off the main card.
