35 mins to kick: Real Madrid will see 23-year-old Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin start in net for the first time in league play this season. In defense, David Alaba is unavailable to take part due to injury, while Eder Militao makes the start next to Nacho Fernandez at center-back. Most notably, Karim Benzema and Thibaut Courtois both start on the bench, with Andriy Lunin in goal and Mariano up front. 60 mins to kick: Barcelona threw some shade yesterday with a post thanking Real Betis for their guard of honour last season. It's been a very nervy start for Real Madrid, who's been both messy on the ball and disorganized off it. The angle of the shot was tight, but he had plenty of the goal to shoot at. It's the first minutes for Jovic since February. Karim Benzema remains on the bench. Real Madrid breaks quickly down the other end through Asensio, but his outside-foot feed is intercepted at the last moment. Meanwhile, the hosts have produced a riveting display as Atleti pressed Real into multiple mistakes, and while it came on a dubious decision via VAR, Atletico Madrid is in front on Carrasco's penalty. The Madrid defender was beat and threw his body into the opponent. The VAR official is the only referee not to have overturned a decision yet this season, but a penalty is given!!! Marcos Llorente also received a yellow for dissent while arguing for the decision before it was sent to VAR.

What is a guard of honor in football? Why is Atletico Madrid refusing ... (Sporting News AU)

When a league champions is crowned in Spain, it's tradition that the team is recognized by its next opponent by a "guard of honor".

Barca have the title, which is what they wanted, but there will be no guard of honor. "Some people want to turn what was born as a gesture of recognition to the champion into a public toll to be paid by their rivals, with the aim of humiliation," the Atletico Madrid statement read. The Spanish one has this guard of honor for their rivals, [but] as an example, where I come from we don't use it. "Under no circumstances are Atletico Madrid going to collaborate in this attempt at mockery in which the true values of sport are completely forgotten. But never was such an exaggerated and artificial expectation or controversy generated as what we have been experiencing in recent weeks." Real Madrid had confirmed the crowning achievement the week prior with a win over Villarreal, eventually finishing five points above second-placed Barcelona.

“We have to respect our club, the employees of the club and respect their decision. “There’s always a lot of politics behind it, but the best thing would be for LaLiga or a federation to make some sort of rule,” he concludes. “I think the history of Real Madrid is above everyone that is going to play in the match. They insist that to give Real a guard of honour would go against and disrespect their own supporters and is simply not the right thing to do. The club will decide and we'll do whatever is necessary.” For weeks, press in Spain have intensely asked the question - will Diego Simeone’s side, themselves champions last season, give their opponents a guard of honour?

Oblak, again, is furious with his defensive teammates, who have allowed a few more openings to Real Madrid this half. Diego Simeone needed the victory badly as the club pushes for a top-four finish, and came away with the prize. Ancelotti's next task is to navigate the coming weeks with as few injuries as possible while also seeing his best players not lose form, which is a difficult tightrope to walk.

Player Ratings: Atletico Madrid 1 - 0 Real Madrid; 2022 La Liga (Managing Madrid)

Apart from a couple of players, most of Real Madrid was on holidays tonight.

Fede Valverde—8.5: The best rating of the night goes to a Fede who didn’t get the memo that the team was on holiday. However, it was clear he had a foot on the brake tonight. Vinicius—7.5: He wasn’t at his sharpest, but Vinicius is the kind of guy who gets things to happen on the pitch, no matter what. And his lack of contribution in possession would be fine if he had some end product, but he also missed Real’s biggest chance of the game. We forget he has a great shot in him, so let’s hope he shoots more frequently in the future. Another source of major turnovers and one of them led to the penalty offense. Camavinga—5: He was supposed to be the antidote in a game where Atlético pressed heavily but he didn’t play at the required level to overcome it. Rodrygo—7: Since Atlético deactivated Real’s passing from the back, the ball rarely reached Rodrygo. However, he managed to create danger when he did get the ball. Toni Kroos—6.5: Clearly not at his best, but I think he did what he could in a team that helped him very, very little to keep possession. On the ball, just like the rest of the defense, he didn’t contribute much and also got caught in turnovers. Positionally a mess because he had to cover for Militão’s madness, and was not as sharp as usual at winning duels. Struggled to contain the threat of Carrasco from the left.

Atlético player ratings: Carrasco penalty secures derby win over Real (Into The Calderon)

Carrasco's penalty earns the crucial win for Champions League-chasing Atleti.

—N/A He got into great areas and had chances to score himself later on in the second half, with a sliding shot from a Carrasco pass missing the mark. He forced a big save from Andriy Lunin in the 63rd minute from Antoine Griezmann’s pass. Ended the match with three tackles and a key pass. His passing was a little off at certain times, but responded when called into action in the second half. The Mozambique international utilized his speed to win 50/50 balls and connected well with Yannick Carrasco to spark some of Atlético’s brightest attacking moments.

Immediate Reaction: Atlético Madrid 1-0 Real Madrid (Managing Madrid)

The second half didn’t bring much change, despite a few of the big names coming on for Real Madrid. Antoine Griezmann came close for Atlético, and Carrasco continued to look dangerous in attack. A Fede Valverde screamer was then denied by Oblak after he came onto the pitch alongside Ferland Mendy, Luka Modrić and Vinícius Júnior. The biggest opportunity for the visitors would come right at the end however, when captain Nacho Fernández spurned a chance from close range. La Liga was now settled, and Real Madrid had a Champions League final to prepare for at the end of the month. The full time whistle blew to give the hosts the 1-0 win - but it remained a good chance for Madrid to stretch some new legs out and give some much needed rest to others, and I don’t think this is the last time we will see this happen in the near future at all. The downside to using the remaining league games as an opportunity to mix the squad up, is that the fixtures may feel like pre-season has come early with the competition sucked out of the proceedings before a ball is kicked. Andriy Lunin was given a very rare place in goal, whilst Lucas Vázquez and Nacho Fernández started at full-back.
