Danny Mandroiu's first-half brace proved the difference as Shamrock Rovers moved within a point of leaders Derry City with a comfortable victory over Finn ...

If the first half was relatively close on the pitch, the second half was anything but as Rovers laid siege to the Harps goal only to find an inspired McGinley in their way. Conor Tourish had given Harps some hope of a comeback with a fine header late in the first half but the home side dialled up the pressure after the break in front of 4,687 fans. Mark McGinley pulled off a string of stunning saves as Rovers assaulted the Harps goal in the second half but couldn’t find a way past the keeper.

Harps had opportunities to level, with Yoyo Mahdy denied by a smart Alan Mannus save and then Ethan Boyle heading inches wide from a corner by Jesse Devers, with the Rovers goalkeeper probably beaten. On the face of it, it could’ve been worse for Ollie Horgan’s side as following an opening goal from Roberto Lopes and Mandroiu’s brace, Stephen Bradley’s team were three up with only 28 minutes played.

The Ireland call-up attempted to connect with a diving header but making contact with his chest was the next best thing as McGinley was left helpless. And there was a hint of controversy about the opener as Rory Gaffney competed for the ball with McGinley, but Welsh referee Tom Owen was happy to play on. Keeper McGinley was in inspired form during a frenetic second period as the Hoops looked to boost their goal difference only to face a pink wall in the Harps goal.

A drone interrupted play in the second half on three separate occasions but Pat’s never ceded control. Brandon Kavanagh failed to control a loose ball with Derry on the attack and the alert Burt gained possession before scampering forward. 16-year-old Sam Curtis made his first start for the club but it was another teenager the travelling supporters were toasting early on. That duly arrived when Eoin Doyle raced onto Ben McCormack’s defence-splitting pass. An inspired Colm Whelan hit a brace as bottom-of-the-table UCD battled back from two goals down against 10-man Dundalk to earn a fully deserved share of the spoils in a thriller at the UCD Bowl. In the end Bohs sub Kris Twardek could have nicked it, but he failed to force the ball home following a deep cross from the left with the last kick of the match. Following hesitancy from Sligo coming out of defence at the end of the first quarter, Moylan picked up possession on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a superb curling strike to the top right-hand corner of the net. All the signs were pointing towards Sligo suffering a second reversal at the hands of the north Dubliners in the current campaign, but they received a lifeline in the shape of a magnificent goal from left-back Patrick Kirk in the 64th-minute. Shels grew in stature as a consequence and a similar finish from the towering Boyd on 43 minutes ensured they were two goals in front at the break. Bohemians were presented with a superb chance to steal the points in the 75th minute when a deep cross from full-back, Tyreke Wilson found the head of Omochere but his effort was saved by Maher from close range. In the 50th minute Patrick McEleney threatened Talbot with a superb curling shot from 25 yards, but the ball failed to hit the target. Derry approached the second half in a different frame of mind and began to dominate possession.

Ruthless Rovers humble Harps in Tallaght (Donegal Daily)

There may be doubt over Hoops boss Stephen Bradley's future but there's no doubting his side's class. Rovers controlled the game from early on with some ...

A Barry McNamee cross to the back post found Jesse Devers and his outside of the foot cross was headed into the near post by Conor Tourish as the Harps went in 3-1 down at the break. But Rovers were ruthless and Gaffney found Shaun Gannon on the right who rifled the cross at Mandriou at the back post to chest into the net making it 2-0. Rory Gaffney was next to cross but it was blocked and Mandriou’s chip shot went over the bar.

Danny Mandroiu scores brace of goals as Stephen Bradley ... (The Irish Sun)

DANNY MANDROIU scored on his knees - but Shamrock Rovers' fans' prayers were answered before kick-off when boss Stephen Bradley confirmed he was s.

But there were no further goals for the Hoops fans to salute. They have a really good plan, a club going in the right direction. Even when McGinley was beaten, his luck was in as Emakhu also hit the post and Tourish cleared a Towell effort off the line in one goalmouth scramble. But there was no fightback as the second half saw Harps clinging on as McGinley pulled off a string of fine saves from Emakhu four times, Towell three times, and Graham Burke twice. It was his run and pass to Andy Lyons that led to the corner for the opening goal for Lopes on 17 minutes. It was only three but it could have been more, as Richie Towell and Aidomo Emakhu could have had hat-tricks in the second half were it not for Harps’ goalkeeper Mark McGinley.

The Hoops came close again, but a couple of McGinley saves kept the score-line at 3-1. Rovers got a third just before the 30-minute mark. Finn Harps got a goal back just before half-time through Conor Tourish but going in at the break Rovers were in the driving seat.
