Kentucky Derby 2022: Saturday Odds, Race Day Bets, And The ... (Forbes)

The Derby's live odds are proving volcanic this year. After the Churchill betting opened Friday, Taiba rocketed to co-favorite. No two-race horse has won ...

But to answer your question, it’s part what’s been happening in training, part Santa Anita, and yes, part Baffert. But a really big part of this early shift is “Big Money” Mike (Smith). There is no more experienced jockey. In some form or fashion I’m going to bet Mo Donegal, Epicenter, Zandon, Crown Pride, Tawny Port and Cyberknife. I still like Cyberknife a little, and I’ve been hearing good things about the Japanese horse Crown Pride, who I think NBC will be doing something on during their broadcast. You could be right that he gets crushed but I think we have the new 20 stall gate, which isn’t as long as the old double gate. Now he’s on a really good colt from Baffert. Big Money Mike has me worried, okay? Let’s go at him again. 19. Zozos, Brad Cox, Manny Franco, (20-1), 39-1 Note: Until post time at 6:57 p.m. ET, we’ll rigorously update the Churchill odds in this space. 16. Cyberknife, Brad Cox, Florent Geroux, (20-1), 14-1 No two-race horse has won the Derby since...Leonatus, in 1883. Momentarily, anyway, Taiba’s the co-favorite. Predictably, Zandon, the razor-thin morning line favorite, very much did not hold his ground in the track odds yesterday, sliding from 3-1 to 8-1, just a shade behind his rival Messier, three stalls to the inside, at 7-1. Usually, on race day at Churchill, the questions get shaved back a bit.

2022 Kentucky Derby: Everything you need to know about the ... (CNN)

The 148th edition of the Kentucky Derby is set to take place on Saturday as the iconic race looks to move on from last year's controversy.

Justify -- trained by Baffert -- was the last horse to win all three races back in 2018. Dubbed the "Greatest Two Minutes in Sports" -- a nod to its approximate run time -- the Derby is the first race in US horse racing's coveted Triple Crown in December, arguably continues to overshadow the spectacle which was first held back in 1875, but the Derby is keen to leave the controversy in the past.

The Kentucky-bred horse is trained by Chad Brown, who is looking for his first Derby win, and will be ridden by jockey Flavien Prat, who won the 2019 Derby aboard Country House.

The 148th annual Kentucky Derby will run on May 7. When is post time? Who's favored to win? And is there a potential Triple Crown winner this year?

After the Derby, the Preakness Stakes is up next. You'll have a seven-day free trial first—and right now, the cord-cutting service is dropping the first month’s bill to $10. The Kentucky Derby will take place on Saturday, May 7. NBC will carry the Derby this year. (Medina Spirit would die before the year was over.) The 148th annual Derby hopes to put all of that in the past. Last year’s run for the roses was marred by controversy: Winner Medina Spirit was disqualified after the horse tested positive for a banned medication.

Kentucky Derby live updates: Results and more from Churchill Downs (USA TODAY)

Derby track playing fair so far, and Chad Brown's Speak of the Devil has impressive win in Grade 2 Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile.

The third race just went official with Lady Rockstar winning an allowance race on turf for trainer Brendan Walsh, who is having a nice weekend. At the same time, Cover Me Up was hustled out of the gate early by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., to get to the rail, set a pretty fast pace up front but still held on for a solid second at 6-to-1. As always, it’s a long haul from the morning until the big race. A late burst got him past the favorite, Warrior Johny. Flavien Prat, the 2019 Derby-winning jockey on Country House, conjured an impressive ride on Speak of the Devil, who swept from last to first very quickly around the far turn. The winner was Creative Minister, one of the favorites, who rallied down the center of the track for trainer Kenny McPeek and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. to get the victory at 7-2 odds. There’s also strong early money on Cyberknife, who is 13-1 after starting at 20-1 on the morning line. With fewer than six hours until the Kentucky Derby, we can start to see how the odds are going to take shape. With just three wins in 22 lifetime starts coming in, he was easy to overlook. -Dan Wolken In a one-mile race named for Knicks Go, the horse who won the Breeders’ Cup Classic last year, Three Technique, did not figure to be much of a factor. Kentucky Derby 2022: Live updates from horse racing's crown jewel (Los Angeles Times)

The 148th running of the Kentucky Derby features a competitive field of 20 horses. Follow along for live updates, the latest betting odds and results.

He has the ability to rate off the leaders and in the Wood chased down the leader to win by a neck. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Trying to find a winner in this year’s 148th running of the Kentucky Derby is about as easy as getting through the week here without wet weather. The Derby trail starts in earnest in early March with races worth 50 points to the winner and early April with races worth 100 points to the winner and 40 points for second. This horse will have a big impact on the race as he is expected to be the early pace and might bring some of the favorites with him, which could compromise them down the stretch. His last two races, both wins, came over the synthetic at Turfway Park. Two of his other wins came on the turf and his first win, at Ellis Park, was a race that was taken off the turf and moved to the dirt. Yakteen was given possession of two outstanding 3-year-old colts and told to do two things in six weeks — get them to the Kentucky Derby and then win it. He did get loose before the start of the Louisiana Derby but was corralled and finished third behind Epicenter and Zozos. He has the second least qualifying points of any horse in the race. This horse is likely in the exacta and most probably in the trifecta. Here’s a look at the current odds, as of around 2 p.m. in Louisville. Post is 6:57 p.m., meaning it’s about five hours to the starting gates opening. He had to finish first or second in the Santa Anita Derby to qualify and he won the race by 2 ¼ lengths. He has beaten several of the second tier of horses in the Derby but not faced the upper echelon. Comment: The Florida Derby has been a springboard to winning the Kentucky Derby 15 times.

The horse, who was attempting to give the trainer a record seventh victory in the race, was subsequently disqualified and Baffert was eventually banned despite insisting he had not been intentionally doped.

Gun It benefitted from a strong start out of the gate, but soon fell back to the pack after the half-mile mark of the race. Brown hopes her win is a sign of good things to come for the day. But Speak of the Devil's furious rally on the final turn sent the 4-year-old filly flying past the five other horses in the field. Obligatory started in last place but overtook Four Graces and Just One Time on the far turn to pull off the 14-length comeback. Dowagiac Chief used a clean break to take the lead through the first half mile of the race, but Red Danger and Coinage weren’t far behind. “He had speed from the start, made a good decision to use him early to sort of get up and out in the clear. As a 7-to-2 favorite on paper, she didn't look like she carried the speed 3-to-1 favorite Just One Time had. Coming off the layoff and a minor injury, the pace of the race concerned me if we ran him in a straight-up sprint. He really took control of the race from there.” Today, (Stolen Base) was really into the race, so it was great.”

Lani finished ninth in the Derby (and third in the Belmont) in 2016. Messier (8-1 in the morning line) is the more seasoned of the pair, a two-time stakes winner who has never finished worse than second. The first Japanese horse to run in the race was Ski Captain in 1995, who finished 14th. Now, Lukas has the option of running Secret Oath against the boys on May 21 in the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown. It would hardly be a stretch for the Hall of Fame trainer. Curlin, the horse of the year in 2007, finished third that year. He is trying to win the Derby after only two starts, a feat accomplished only once before, by a horse named Leonatus in 1883. Epicenter and Taiba were the favorites as of 4 p.m. Here are the odds for the 2022 Kentucky Derby, as of 4 p.m. Eastern time, listed in order of post position. Hughes tested positive for the coronavirus and will watch from his home in Ann Arbor, Mich. He said he texts with Mark Messier and his father, Doug Messier, a former player and coach and avid horse racing fan. Mark Messier, who is an analyst for ESPN and is covering the N.H.L. playoffs, was unable to make it to the Derby. But he has followed the horse’s career and will be rooting him on from afar. “The only thing I told him when he told me wanted to name a horse Messier was that he better get it right,” Hughes said. He was 12-1 in the morning line.

Kentucky Derby odds, predictions and live results: Horses post ... (The Athletic)

The 2022 Kentucky Derby is here and looking to turn the page after two of the last three races were tarnished by disqualified winners.

In smaller field races, there’s an inside bias of establishing an inside position going into the first turn and having a shorter trip around the race track. Churchill Downs used a new starting gate in 2020 for the Derby, with all 20 gates on a single starting gate. Of note: Because superfectas are tricky to predict, they can offer big payouts in a race like the Derby ($51,400 in 2019), but they can get expensive. This allows you to put the heavy favorite on top, three horses that could finish second, and then a long shot or two in third. 🤔 Aloha West, who won the BC Sprint, is back off the layoff.— Katherine Terrell (@Kat_Terrell) https://t.co/cq1l1bFoHC May 7, 2022 His jockey and trainer, Joel Rosario and Steven Asmussen, will team up again with Kentucky Derby favorite Epicenter. Epicenter leads all horses with 13 percent bet on the No. 3 horse. In its simplest traditional form, a Mint Julep is made with fresh mint, bourbon (not whisky), simple syrup, and shaved or crushed ice. It’s all three bets on one ticket, and while it costs more (betting $2 across the board is a $6 bet), you could still get a chunk of money even if that longshot comes in third. Nobody has won from inside post since 1986, will have to drop back and avoid traffic to have a chance. The good thing about Derby Day is that so much money is being put in the pools, and a lot of it from casual betters, that you can often get a good price on a favorite. Twenty horses make up this year's field, led by favorites Epicenter, Taiba, Zandon and Messier. There will be no Bob Baffert; the six-time Derby-winning trainer was suspended after Medina Spirit's DQ from last year's race.

The weather was cloudy and cool at the 2022 Kentucky Derby in Louisville. But the mood at Churchill Downs? That was a different story.

Jasmine Carter and Candice Richard of Louisville have attended the Derby before, but it had been a few years. Murer has been hooked on horseracing ever since her first bet in 2006 when she put $2 across the board on Lemons Forever and won $250. They also soaked in the sights and the fashion. This was a "bucket list item" for them and Tomisha had been planning her outfit for months. “We did very well yesterday on the last break,” Tice said. After a rainy forecast in the week leading up to The Run for the Roses, Derbygoers enjoyed dry but chilly weather.

Kentucky Derby 2022: History of the 'Run For The Roses' (Irish Mirror)

The race was first run in 1875 and has thrown up so many equine legends including Secretariat, Affirmed and American Pharoah.

The first leg of the US Triple Crown – the Preakness at Pimlico follows two weeks later, and the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park a further three weeks on – the Kentucky Derby is the touchstone of the great American middle-distance thoroughbred. Originally staged over the Derby trip of a mile and a half under the twin spires at Churchill Downs in the Bluegrass State, the Kentucky Derby was shortened to its 10-furlong distance in 1896. Steve Cauthen, on board Affirmed for the ‘Run for the Roses’ – the Kentucky Derby hero was first draped in a floral blanket in 1932 – described riding in the race in 1978 as “being on the centre stage of the universe”.

Live updates: Rich Strike wins the Kentucky Derby (The Washington Post)

Saturday's race at Churchill Downs marked the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby, the first jewel in horse racing's Triple Crown.

Here is how to break down a field. But critics see something different: a move by wealthy and politically connected horsemen to strengthen their hold on the industry. A beginner’s guide to betting on horse racing: Horse racing can be intimidating to newcomers. (He has Wood Memorial winner Mo Donegal on the rail.) Trainer Steve Asmussen, winner of just about every other big thing from here to Dubai, tries again with Derby horse No. 24 since 2001, hoping second-favorite Epicenter will exceed Fifty Stars, Private Emblem, Quintons Gold Rush, Storm Treasure, Private Vow, Curlin, Zanjero, Pyro, Z Fortune, Nehro, Daddy Nose Best, Sabercat, Tapiture, Gun Runner, Creator, Lookin At Lee, Hence, Untrapped, Combatant, Long Range Toddy, Max Player, Midnight Bourbon and Super Stock. You could go with Messier (8-1 on the morning line), my choice to win it all, or you could go bigger and look for one of the many horses that should offer odds of 20-1 or better at post time. Bettors and casual fans will hear a lot about the top choices in this year’s Kentucky Derby, and for good reason. Mike Smith will become to oldest jockey to win the Kentucky Derby if co-favored colt, Taiba, crosses the line first. Guided by Smith, Taiba took first in the Grade I Santa Anita Derby, beating stablemate Messier in a stunning performance. That could be the case again Saturday, with rain expected to blanket the Louisville area for much of the week until post time. “He’s got to complete a suspension and he has to behave during that suspension,” Carstanjen said of Baffert. “We are not a regulatory authority, we’re a private enterprise, so most states are recognizing the 90 day suspension that he’s been given by the Kentucky Horse Racing commission, but he still has international opportunities and other opportunities. Baffert, who was banned for two years by Churchill Downs, will catch this year’s Kentucky Derby from a watch party in Tucson, according to the NBC broadcast. To make sure the horse would be eligible for Saturday’s Run for the Roses, embattled trainer Bob Baffert — serving a two-year suspension at Churchill Downs — transferred Messier to Tim Yakteen, a former Baffert assistant who went out on his own in 2004.

What Is the Biggest Upset in Kentucky Derby History? Here's Where ... (NBC Chicago)

The 2022 Kentucky Derby winner overcame 80-1 odds to beat the field at Churchill Downs.

Another thoroughbred that came just shy of Triple Crown glory, Thunder Gulch won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes in 1995. In the leadup to the Derby, Velasquez was informed that Uncle Mo, a leading contender, would not race as he recovered from a stomach infection. He gained speed down the stretch and pulled out in front of a three-horse photo finish. The image of Antley cradling his leg to prevent further injury was famously etched in the lore of horse racing as what could have been. In the immediate aftermath of the race, an objection was raised against Maximum Security, accusing him and jockey Luis Saez of interfering with several horses down the final straightaway. These obstacles brought the two sides together in a race that would jump start Velasquez’s legendary career. What transpired was one of the greatest comebacks in Derby history. The 39th winner of the Kentucky Derby earned his roses. Forty-eight hours before the race, Rich Strike was nowhere near the conversation of Kentucky Derby champions. As fate would have it, Ethereal Road scratched and that opened the door for Rich Strike and trainer Eric Reed. Goose and Donerail certainly got a piece, passing the favorites, Ten Point and Yankee Notion. Country House’s run was historic in more ways than one.

Rich Strike overtook the leaders in the closing strides for a stunning 80-1 upset Saturday in the Kentucky Derby.

"And so anybody that's in this business, lightning can strike." Last year's winner, Medina Spirit, was disqualified after nine months, having failed a postrace drug test that led to six-time Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert being banned from Churchill Downs for two years. Leon eventually guided his mount between horses and to the inside rail. "We found out about 30 seconds before the deadline on Friday," Rich Strike owner Rick Dawson said. Rich Strike made a deft move around Messier in the stretch and went right back to the rail intent on picking off Epicenter and Zandon. But he matched wits with such veteran riders as Joel Rosario, aboard Epicenter, and Mike Smith, aboard Messier. "I about passed out.'' "When I was in the last 70 yards, I said, 'I think I got this race,'" Leon said. "I can't believe it after Epicenter's effort," said losing trainer Steve Asmussen, who fell to 0-for-24 in the Derby. "I got beat by the horse that just got in." With 4-1 favorite Epicenter and Zandon engaged in a duel at the front, Rich Strike stole the show with the second-biggest upset in the Derby's 148-year history.
