Paul Merson: A Walk Through My Life review — a rueful ramble with ... (The Times)

Here was a previously tortured soul in recovery from alcohol and gambling addiction and the spectacular scenery of North Yorkshire was his medicine. Yes that ...

Especially when (spoilers ahead) DI Ray, in a dangerous showdown with her evil white fiancé, who was about to get her killed, took the time to lecture him on “preconceived ideas and stereotypes about Asian crime”. I’d have been using shorter words than that, specifically of the four-letter variety. The format for these celebrity walks, which are framed as a sort of confessional/meditation on life, is effective, because we get to breathe in nature with the subject, rather than just seeing them interviewed in a boring chair. “I never used to see things,” he said, always failing to be “present” in the moment. Merson was in the mood to be reflective, profound even, walking through North York Moors national park, selfie stick in hand; though, as a city boy more used to pavements, he kept stumbling. “It’s not the money you lose,” he said, “it’s the time.” He has eight children and two ex-wives and he said that he realises he takes his current wife for granted. The Merson we saw in Paul Merson: A Walk Through My Life, yomping through the countryside at daybreak, was a different man.

Merson discusses his demons while discovering the countryside for the first time - but this is more therapy session than BBC nature show.

Perhaps because it was stretched to an hour, the programme felt more studied than Winter Walks. Did a bagpiper just happen to be practising in his garden at the moment Merson walked through the village? The footballer Paul Merson has never, in his 54 years, been for a walk in the countryside. Merson talked candidly and sometimes tearfully about his addictions to alcohol and gambling.
