There was a rush of bids in the last nine minutes of the auction for the shirt worn by Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final clash in Mexico.

When the auction ended at 4pm, the shirt sold for £7,142,500. "In the weeks since we announced the auction we have been inundated by sports fans and collectors alike, with a palpable excitement in the air for the duration of the public exhibition – and this unfiltered enthusiasm was echoed in the bidding. The Argentinian was known to many as the greatest of all time after he scored a hand goal, which he later said was made “a little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God”, and for the “goal of the century” when he dribbled past several England players to score another goal.

Minutes later, a 25-year-old Maradona scored what many believe to be the greatest goal of all time, starting his run from in his own half and weaving between helpless England players before slotting home.

He had owned the shirt ever since the match although for the last 20 years it had been on display at the National Football Museum in Manchester. Argentina legend Maradona equalised against England at the 1986 World Cup with his hand before going on to score the "goal of the century" to send his country through. Following Maradona's death in November 2020, Hodge said the shirt was not for sale.
