The Portuguese has been by far and away United’s best player, scoring 23 goals in all competitions, but Ten Hag will have to decide whether he fits into his plans. Recent reports have claimed the Dutchman has identified full-back as an area United will need to upgrade and Mirror Football understands Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacai is on his radar. The England international can leave on a free in a matter of weeks, but reports have suggested that Ten Hag could offer Lingard a lifeline. He now looks set for a return to South America where he will wind down his career. Mirror Football takes a look at which players could be waving goodbye to the club, when they wave to the near empty stands on Monday evening. The Red Devils’ miserable home campaign will come to an end on Monday night, when they take on Brentford in front of an increasingly apathetic Old Trafford crowd.

Fred and Edinson Cavani could both return from calf injuries. Four players are out for Brentford — Ethan Pinnock, Sergi Canos, Frank Onyeka, and Saman Ghoddos.

Those factors culminated in Judge deciding to resign from his role as United’s director of football negotiations. Judge had previously reported direct to Woodward, but he did not have the same line into new chief executive Richard Arnold. People with a good understanding of Manchester United believe Matt Judge’s position at the club became uncertain once Ed Woodward left. Follow the action from Old Trafford as the Red Devils host the Bees.

Eriksen has created 13 chances since joining the club, more than any other Brentford player in that period. Bryan Mbeumo makes the run in behind but Alex Telles closes him down just as he brings the ball under control and his shot is blocked. 6 mins: David De Gea taps a cross into the Man Utd box over the crossbar and gives Brentford their second corner of the game. Diogo Dalot flicks a forward pass over the top and perfectly picks of Cristiano Ronaldo on the penalty area. He goes down but the referee isn’t interested in the penaly appeal. Manchester United take on Brentford this evening and will be hoping to recover some pride after a torrid run of performances.

“I think recruitment is gonna be [important]… he’s going to have to get the right players in, the right characters and get players out the door because the last few years just haven’t been good enough. They’re going to reinvest, they’re going to get players in, they’re going to get stronger. United are set to undergo a sizeable rebuild during the summer transfer window with a number of players tipped to leave. “We’re talking about Man United rebuilding as if Liverpool and Man City and these other teams are going to take it easy over the summer. “I think that it’s the points total that worries me. I think it's important to see the big picture and then hopefully bring in the best possible players. "No matter which club, it is always necessary and important that you need an idea," he added. But asked again for a timeframe on these pieces falling into place at Old Trafford, he answered that it wouldn’t “necessarily need, three four years in order to do that”.

He is, however, determined not to get "too carried away" with the regular speculation over where his future lies. With constant rumours regarding N'Golo Kante and Jorginho's future at the club, Rice would be a perfect long-term replacement for either of them. Rice could go to United and become one of the highest earners in the Premier League, but there is no assurance that he will become a winner there. Ten Hag is one of the most highly regarded coaches in European football, but there is no guarantee that he will be able to turn United's fortunes around. The report says that Man City have their attention on signing a world-class central striker, with Erling Haaland looking increasingly likely to move to the Etihad Stadium. Meanwhile, Chelsea may prioritise defensive signings, with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen set to depart. Last summer, the future of the West Ham United midfielder dominated the headlines, with Chelsea expressing a clear interest in their former academy player.

Then we'll have time in pre-season to work together (with Ten Hag), get our ideas right and start the new season. He said on Ten Hag's imminent arrival: "Knowing Erik will be the manager, with a good recruitment process and bringing in the right players, I'm very positive the supporters and the media will be able to see a better team and, at the end, hopefully a better position in the league."

The relief turned to disbelief a couple of minutes later when the peerless Ronaldo slipped and fell over when clean through on goal thanks to a delightful Diogo Dalot through ball. He is not alone, of course, and the sub-plot of the game revolved around the imminent shake-up expected from Ten Hag and how the supporters would react to their last home game of a wretched season. It was his ninth goal in his last six league games for the club, a spell in which he has accounted for all but three of his team’s output.

Raphael Varane then got in on the act to add a deflected third. Of course, there were a number of excellent performers in the red shirt as United completed the double over the south-west Londoners. "Any top manager will believe he can get a reaction from the players and he will get backing. I think the job that Ten Hag has is absolutely huge." They go on to win it and then win the Premier League but they are back at the party in year three. "We have seen Manchester United through the season, when things have gone against them, that is it, they throw the towel in. That is the bit that has to be dealt with because these players are not as bad as the points tally that is on that board. "He was never at the level of Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola and was never going to overtake them, but it felt like something was just building. Surely that is something that Ten Hag has to deal with first and foremost?" "I think it is really interesting hearing stories about how toxic the dressing room is.

Manchester United finally gave the Old Trafford faithful something to shout about as Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane sealed a 3-0 win ...

They proceeded to shake hands with a lot of the backroom staff with this being their last game at United's home ground. It was vintage Mata and Ronaldo couldn't contain his joy as he celebrated with the playmaker opting to hug his teammate instead of his patented 'Siu' celebration. Referee Chris Kavanagh waved away appeals but Ronaldo was adamant that it was a spot-kick. Mata, who is likely playing his final game at Old Trafford, made sure he left supporters with a game to remember as he kept cropping up in dangerous areas. Fernandes opened the scoring in the first half, ending his goal drought before Ronaldo doubled their lead from the penalty spot to make Brentford the 168th different club he has scored against. Joy turned into despair however as VAR ruled it out for offside.
