A gloomy May Day awaits Nigerian workers (The Conversation Africa)

With a monthly minimum wage of 30000 Naira (US$72), the average Nigerian worker is groaning under the weight of the rising cost of living.

To ease food supply constraints and ultimately reduce the cost of food in Nigeria, government should focus on boosting the productive capacities of small-scale farmers. Perhaps the greatest boost to food production in India is the country’s extremely cheap and extensive transportation network. The fact that Nigerian workers have neither embarked on food riots, nor staged mass demonstrations to protest the unbearable increases in food prices, implies they must have found ways of coping with food inflation. Because of easy access to inexpensive transportation, farmers can bring their products to the open market daily. The rising cost of living has left Nigerian workers with a stark choice. The other three high spenders on food are Kenya (46.7%), Cameroon (45.6%), and Algeria (42.5%). This Hobbesian choice is worse for a one-income household with multiple people, where the minimum monthly wage has to be spread across members of the household. The war in Ukraine has added further upward pressure on commodity and fuel prices. Food prices contributed about 60 percent to Nigeria’s inflation in 2021. Soaring food prices are the major cause. This has been made worse by the rising cost of living. In less than 15 minutes, you would find that you’ve spent at least 10,000 Naira (or US$24 at the official exchange rate of US$1 = 416 Naira).

May 1, International Workers' Day: A brief history of resistance (FRANCE 24)

The protests are expected to be bigger and angrier than usual on Sunday as a cost-of-living crisis sweeps through France and beyond. The US labour movement’s campaign for an eight-hour day burgeoned despite the violent end to the Haymarket movement. In Ancient Rome, May 1 marked the midpoint of the Floralia, a week-long holiday honouring Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers. Another rally was called for May 4 that went on mostly peacefully until the end, when police attempted to disperse the demonstration. Centuries after Christianity became hegemonic across Europe, May Day remained rooted in its pagan origins – a fact recognised by the Puritans who took over England after the end of the Civil War in 1649 and banned May Day festivities such as Morris dancing, garlanding a Maypole with ribbons and crowning a May queen. Against this backdrop, France is expecting the largest and most raucous May Day rallies it has seen in decades.

What is May Day? For the most part, the opposite of capitalism (KTOO)

May Day, celebrated by workers across the globe as International Labor Day, falls on May 1. But you'd be forgiven if that's news to you.

On that May date, anarchists and labor activists in Chicago began a multi-day strike in what became known as the Haymarket affair of 1886. “There was a trial of eight men who were found guilty of conspiracy to murder,” Linebaugh said. His words “swept the globe,” Linebaugh said. “The Puritans of Boston put an end to it by military force,” Linebaugh said. The following day, a meeting held in the city’s Haymarket Square turned even bloodier. A 16-hour shift wasn’t unusual for workers at the time. Before May Day was adopted as a day to champion workers, its roots belonged to pagan tradition. Inevitably, history shows, that May Day comradery has been met with suppression. The springtime tradition was inherited from pagan tribes in Ireland and Scandinavia, said Linebaugh, borrowing ancient Roman practices celebrating the Earth’s flowering season. President Dwight D. Eisenhower instead declared May 1 “Law Day” — dedicated to the principles of government under law — and Labor Day is now celebrated in September. “And yet this tradition of May Day as a time of dancing and play and pleasure persisted right into many parts of the U.S. today.” But you’d be forgiven if that’s news to you.

The ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party was forced to call off its May Day rally in view of the ongoing protests. She was replaced by her National Rally party Interim President Jordan Bardella, who said Le Pen was preparing for forthcoming legislative elections. Their windows were broken and garbage bins set on fire. Istanbul governor’s office said that police detained 164 people for demonstrating without permits and resisting police at the square.
