Newcastle United v Liverpool: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: The title race heads for Tyneside as in-form Newcastle entertain Jürgen Klopp and co.

The weather is wonderful and so is the atmosphere. 2 mins: Saint-Maximin curls in a cross from the left. 6 mins: Liverpool have a free-kick on the left after Jota is fouled. Liverpool, however, have a decent record of their own, having dropped two points in the past 13 matches. 8 mins: Liverpool are getting a foothold in the match after Newcastle’s early pressure. The ball goes out to Keita, who plays a one-two and then goes round Dubravka to whack it into the net from six yards. There’s an intensity to Newcastle, on and off the pitch. Krafth beats Mane to the ball but it does not matter as the flag is raised for offside. The Brazilian decides against playing it long and just knocks it out for a throw-in before Saint-Maximin can dispossess him. Marriner waves play on after a Milner challenge leaves Schar on the deck. Newcastle need to speed things up again in the hope of disrupting Liverpool. The opener - a fine finish from Keita - was thoroughly deserved for the visitors.

An opportune throw-in from the hands of Targett very close to the Liverpool goal isn't navigated very well, but Liverpool's chance of sustained possession ...

Catapulted from the relegation zone to ninth place after netting 38 points in 23 games, Newcastle meet Liverpool off the back of four consecutive wins with the fans in full voice. It's cleared safely, but reveals intention: Newcastle can have fun with the aim of taking something here today. Challenge by Targett on Diaz leads to a throw-in very close to the Newcastle box. Liverpool firmly in control now, and a wide ball from van Dijk to Gomez just by the Newcastle goal illustrates the point well. Gomez fouls Joelinton, dragging him by the armpit to the ground just inside the Liverpool half. Newcastle push to get their equaliser this side of the break, with Guimaraes and Saint-Maximin testing Liverpool on the box's edge. Any attempt to move it further is spoiled, but the ball goes behind a Liverpool corner. Newcastle have around ten minutes for a turnaround, but Liverpool are so good at holding onto possession. Salah receives, and misfires, before Newcastle send the ball out of harm's way. He falls to the ground, and play is immediately stopped for a head injury. But now Saint-Maximin has a chance, breaking past the Liverpool defence to set up Chris Wood, the only man in front of him. He protests it was a Newcastle foot which sends the ball out of play, and on the replay, could be correct, but it's a goal kick now.

Newcastle vs Liverpool: Player ratings, analysis and reaction as ... (iNews)

Jurgen Klopp's decision to make five changes was vindicated as Naby Keita's first-half finish sent Liverpool to the top of the Premier League.

“If it is a positive sign for the boys, then great, but I don’t think this will be the one decisive thing for whatever decision they have to make. “It was difficult, the only plan they had obviously was long balls to our right side… “I thought Joe Gomez was different class and like Milly (James Milner) said we need everyone in the squad. Sandwiched between those two chances was a rare Newcastle effort on target, when Alisson denied his Brazilian compatriot and Newcastle’s man of the moment Bruno Guimaraes with a comfortable save down to his right. Much to Klopp’s frustration, Liverpool continued to be wasteful in front of goal, with Jota firing straight at Dubravka when a calmer head was required. At the other end, Jota drew a spectacular stop from Dubravka with a powerful header that is quickly becoming his signature move.

Newcastle United 0-1 Liverpool LIVE (ChronicleLive)

Newcastle United welcome Liverpool to St James' Park in the early kick-off as the Magpies potentially have a huge say in the Premier League title race.

#nufc certainly have pace on the counter but will have to use ball well today as well as defend resolutely. Liverpool enjoying more of the ball in the opening 10 minutes but Newcastle aren't making it easy for them. The commitment from the team has been there.. A few times the away side have been penned in at the back after good work from Eddie Howe's attackers. Liverpool play the ball around quickly, finally finding Gomez unmarked on the right flank. You certainly know every time Henderson has the ball at his feet. Instead, Jota pushes the Brazilian who retaliates with a shove of his own. Luckily the striker's shot is tame and easily saved by Dubravka. Almiron goes down theatrically on the edge of the area. Joelinton fouls Diaz on the half-way line. However, Newcastle go into this game full of confidence following a 3-0 win against Norwich and the Magpies have won six games on the bounce at St James' Park, which has become a real fortress under Eddie Howe. The Gallowgate want a foul.

Sadio Mane squandered another promising Liverpool attack in the 60th minute, pushing his effort wide of the goal after a terrific run from Joe Gomez down the right wing. The midfielder finished off a slick move on 19 minutes, which started with a James Milner challenge on Fabian Schar that Newcastle thought was a foul. Despite Liverpool's dominance, Newcastle looked spritely when they had the ball, and came close to finding an equaliser in the 87th minute when Guimaraes found space on the edge of the box and fired a low shot, but Alisson covered it well and Liverpool held on to secure the three points.
