Ronnie O'Sullivan won five frames on the spin, including a stunning re-spot on the final black of the session, to move into a 10-6 lead over John Higgins.

Higgins crafted a break of 53, but missed frame ball as he once again struggled to make a big contribution. That changed in the 14th as O’Sullivan won an arm wrestle to open up a two-frame lead. On two occasions in frame 10, Higgins was stopped by going in-off after pots.

Judd Trump is 11-5 up against Mark Williams in the other semi-final.

Trump produced a terrific 79 clearance to go 11-4 up but a double on the red was the start of Williams’ break of 70 as he ended this session with a flourish. Williams ended the second session with a scintillating break of 70 but that merely kept the deficit to six frames as Trump held the upper hand to lead 11-5 before they resumed on Friday evening. O’Sullivan made breaks of 99, 91, 70 and 73 to open up a 10-6 lead, but it was the manner in which he won the last frame of the session on a respotted black which will have hurt Higgins the most.

Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump take charge in Crucible semi-finals (The Guardian)

Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump hold significant leads in the world snooker championship semi-finals over John Higgins and Mark Williams respectively.

Williams ended the second session with a scintillating break of 70 but that merely kept the deficit to six frames as Trump held the upper hand to lead 11-5 before they resumed on Friday evening. Trump established a 7-1 lead after the opening session as Williams struggled to find any sort of fluency at the Crucible, but the pair evenly split the eight frames on offer on Friday morning. O’Sullivan’s attempt to double the respotted black left Higgins with a difficult pot into the green pocket which the Scot was unable to convert, the black running down the table to leave O’Sullivan a simple pot into the middle.

Trump, who had not potted a single ball in four of the last five frames, responded superbly with his second century of the session, but Williams took the final frame of the night to leave the outcome firmly in the balance. Higgins had earlier taken two of the first three frames of the day to lead 6-5, but O’Sullivan kicked off a winning run of five frames in a row with a break of 99, despite having to ask referee Marcel Eckardt to remind spectators in the front few rows to sit still. The Welshman kickstarted a run of five frames in succession with a total clearance of 137 and added contributions of 58, 53, 57 and 77 to close the gap to 12-10.
