"When I was on the sideline, as a coach, as a manager, or as a player, it was always a privilege to wear that Dublin crest. "I am constantly aware that this isn't really for me, it's for the team that I represented, the Dublin Senior Football team, and particularly the players," Gavin said afterwards to DubsTV. After completing the "drive for five" as Dublin won a historic five All-Ireland's in a row, Jim stepped down as manager in the winter of 2019 to focus on family life at home with his wife and their teenager kids.
