James Corden calls leaving 'The Late Late Show' his 'hardest decision' (The Washington Post)

For a moment on Friday morning's show, Corden left comedy behind and opened up about the difficult choice to depart the show next year.

In the “Crosswalk the Musical” sketch, Corden dresses up as a character and performs a musical with celebrities in the middle of a busy intersection, surprising drivers. He recently hosted HBO Max’s “Friends: The Reunion” and wrote and starred in the long-awaited 2019 Christmas special of “Gavin & Stacey,” a show Corden co-created with Welsh actress Ruth Jones. “But … we are not leaving today,” Corden said. Corden revamped the show, which airs weeknights at 12:30 a.m. ET, with segments like “Carpool Karaoke,” “Drop the Mic,” “ Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” and “ Crosswalk the Musical.” “I’d like to try and write. “It was going to be a journey, an adventure. “When I started this journey, it was always going to be just that,” Corden said. In the “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” segment, Corden sits down with a celebrity and they take turns asking each other questions. The roughly 15-minute-long clips show Corden driving around while celebrities in the passenger seat sing along, sometimes to their own songs. Since then, Corden has thrown “the ultimate late night after party,” featuring a mix of celebrity guests, “edgy” musical performances, games and sketches, according to the show’s website. The other half is, the sadder news is … this will be my last year hosting.” I love all the people that work here.

Who Should Replace James Corden on The Late Late Show? (Vanity Fair)

With Corden announcing that he's leaving The Late Late Show next year, we present a range of options.

She’s someone you’d want to gab with on a couch, which, given the Late Late Show’s more casual two-guests-at-once style, seems like a good fit for the program. If CBS wants to go the more traditional route, hopefully they’ll expand their search from the late-night space and look into other forms of media, like podcasts. Before coming to CBS, Corden broke out as a theater star; his biggest hit as a late-night host has been creating Carpool Karaoke, a musical franchise that’s evolved from Late Late Show staple to its own series. With decades of comedy experience under his belt—just check out his multiple acclaimed Comedy Central specials—plus the political bona fides to take on the current events aspect of the gig, given his many years serving as a correspondent on The Daily Show, Woods would be a wonderful successor to Corden. His dry and brutally honest takes about hot topics in American politics, from critical race theory to Black History Month, delight as much as they inform, and appearances on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show prove he can banter with the best of them. And like Corden, Ruffin is a charmer who often has a song in her heart, unafraid to engage in a silly, musical bit. After eight and a half years, James Corden will finally be getting out of the Carpool Karaoke game.
