“Everything you need to capture the spontaneity and fun of the moment from new perspectives is right in the palm of your hand,” Spiegel said. And it knows when and where to return, landing gently in the palm of your hand.” “But one of the big overarching concepts people have is that a lot of those tools are designed to replace reality. Core to that evolution is an update called Lens Cloud that lets developers for both Snapchat and Spectacles build AR experiences that are firmly placed in the real world. So we believe that trying to break some of those constraints, and go into a truly immersive and interactive AR experience, will be really important in the future.” “We’re happy with the value that we provide to our community – and society.”

Snap Pixy: hands-on with Snapchat's selfie drone (The Verge)

Snapchat is releasing a $230 selfie drone for taking selfies called Pixy. CEO Evan Spiegel explains why it fits into Snap's camera company strategy.

And so I don’t think that the prudent approach for us would be to try to push scale for a product that isn’t ready yet.” The Pixy is just a toy, at least for now. “After a couple versions of camera glasses, it just becomes very clear that the market for camera glasses is actually very small and constrained to people who want that first person POV,” he says. “I think the market for Pixy is bigger.” “At the same time, there’s a lot of technical constraints that exist today that mean that it will be hard for AR glasses to reach scale in the near term. Is a future coming in which I’m wearing AR Spectacles and controlling a paired Pixy with my mind? Snap has included a few Pixy-specific AR effects to choose from, and I’d expect more to be added over time from the company and its creators. Thanks to a bottom-facing camera, the Pixy’s main trick is taking off and landing in your hand. Spectacles have never been a commercial success, and Snap overestimated the demand for them initially, but now they are full-fledged AR glasses that represent what many technologists, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, believe will be the next major wave of computing. Pixy is available online for $230 in the US and France starting Thursday. Unlike most existing drones, it’s small and light enough to fit in a pant pocket. Since the device is so light, you won't want to use it in windy conditions. A key focus for Pixy was making it approachable with friendly-sounding propellers and a design that could fit into your pocket.

“We believe that AR is the future, and for that to happen, we want more partners and companies and people to build in AR and think about how that helps to solve new problems that we aren't solving on our own.” Many of these new updates make this aim more obvious, says Navas. “We want to be a business-to-business tech solution because of the value we can give brands,” she says. Snapchat users will also be able to more easily discover products to digitally try on, via Snap’s new “Dress Up” section, which is the first time it has created a specific destination for this type of content.
