Castle on the hill: The incredible rise of Ed Sheeran (Irish Examiner)

Ed Sheeran's unconventional journey from busker to megastar began at a gig he was brought to in Dublin as child.

And that ability to conjure from thin air the career he’d dreamed of since seeing Damien Rice in Whelan’s 20 years ago could go down as his greatest accomplishment. His cousin Laura saw a different side, as she told me in 2012, “Ed is a serious pro, and such a positive guy – really up for anything and so driven,” she said. Yet, if beloved, Sheeran had a target on his back from the start. The moment changed everything for him: he wanted to be like Rice, mesmerising a room with just voice and guitar. And yet it’s hard not to suspect his true talent may be for pushing through and breaking down doors that were never meant to be open for him. Sheeran, a scrappy outsider with no contacts in the music business, was determined to steer his own course. Despite looking nothing like a pop star, the music industry was now paying attention. Still unsigned, in early 2011 he arranged a free show at the Barfly pub in Camden in London. Some 1,000 turned up. And with a healthy chip on his shoulder. This was 2011: heyday of The X Factor, when fame was regarded as something that Simon Cowell-like figures bestowed from on high. The other artists he met were older, cooler, and had, so he felt, better songs. He holds bragging right for the highest-grossing world tour in history, having generated over €800 million during the two years in which he took his ÷ album on the road.

Businesses are gearing up for what is set to be a bumper few days in Cork city.

I normally don't like concerts because of the crowds and the very loud music but this one's going to be really special. The pair will be attending with Evie's parents-Lisa and Conor McCrory. We're excited to be going to the concert with them just to see their reactions." "This will be their first concert and they just can't comprehend how Ed will actually be there in front of everyone. Mr Sheeran has sold more than 150 million records across the globe, making him one of the world's best-selling music artists. I'm dreading the day they tell me they are going to a concert by themselves. Speaking of his initial meeting with the popstar he said: "I was shocked when I got to meet him. I've a feeling there's going to be a really nice energy at the concert." "This will be the first "lads' night out we've had together," he said. It's really exciting." It's gone from LOL dolls to concert tickets so they are already growing up very fast." Hopefully, he would remember me."
