She was residing in the apartment at the time of the alleged offence. Mr Cawley had also dropped the defendant in to the city and she was doing her own shopping around town. At 10pm Michael Cawley went to the Atlantic Pond with Santina in the car. Karen Harrington made an arrangement to meet a friend at Elderwood Drive in the same apartment complex where she lived. He called a halt to proceedings and words were exchanged. The jurors were told that Santina sustained polytrauma and blunt force trauma, with extensive bruising to the head, thorax, abdomen and limbs, an injury to her spine and nose and bruising on her mouth.

"At that time in 2019, she (Harrington) was in a relationship with Michael Cawley and had been for some time. Mr Cawley discovered the body of Santina lying naked and unresponsive on a duvet - and woke Karen Harrington, who was lying on a nearby couch, to ask her what had happened. Mr Cawley and Ms Harrington - who had Santina with them - were socialising throughout the afternoon and evening of July 4 with others. Mr Gillane said Mr Olney - who had earlier confronted Ms Harrington about the noise she was making in the early hours of the morning - was so concerned he contacted gardaí who attended the property. "Not only could he (Mr Olney) hear a child crying, he could hear the accused (Harrington) shouting directly at the child, mocking and taunting the child and terrorising the child,” he said. A trained paramedic, Sgt Brian Teehan of the ASU found Santina was still warm but lifeless to the touch, save for a faint pulse. The first to respond were members of the Garda ASU. He was told to return the next day. He said a postmortem found she had multiple injuries all over her body. He woke Ms Harrington, who was asleep on a couch, to ask her what had happened to Santina but she left the apartment on foot and he got Mr Olney to raise the alarm. Mr Cawley later left with Santina and put her on a duvet at Ms Harrington’s apartment before he returned to Ms Higgins’s to get his phone.
