'Get out of our club': The day Oldham Athletic fell from the cliff edge (The Athletic)

Relegated from the EFL after a match that had to finish behind closed doors, Oldham fans blame their owner for their swift descent.

“Despite the earlier announcement of the abandonment of the fixture, after discussions with both clubs, match officials, and stadium security it was agreed the match could be concluded today,” it read. Two dozen police officers arrived in support of overrun stewards before an announcement went out just after 5pm, 20 minutes or so after play was halted, to inform fans the game had been abandoned. There is deep scepticism among fans on Lemsagam’s ambitions to sell a club he bought for £1 in January 2018. There were gilt-edged chances, too, for Oldham to take the lead. “We are of one mind that there is no future for our club under this regime and they must go,” said a statement released by fans group Push the Boundary on Saturday morning. He released a five-year plan when he first arrived, saying he wanted to get to the Championship. Now we’re facing relegation to National League. I’ve never felt so disconnected to my club.” The English Football League (EFL) later said the decision had been made to “maintain the integrity of the competition”. Oldham, after all, are a club where fans have been mobilising against Lemsagam for much of the season. Not even an unofficial truce, called in support of Sheridan, could last the season. Oldham were given that desperate opportunity with shadows lengthening across the pitch that had taken over an hour to clear but could not take it. The private intention, however, had always been to finish what had been started. A handshake and consolations were exchanged between Oldham manager John Sheridan and his Salford City counterpart Gary Bowyer, while a handful of players lay crestfallen on the Boundary Park pitch.
