Goal-hungry Louth obliterate Carlow in Navan (RTE.ie)

Goal-hungry Louth maintained their strong recent form by comfortably seeing off Carlow in Navan, setting up a Leinster SFC quarter-final clash with Kildare.

They led by 1-05 to 0-01 at that stage with Mulroy and Ciaran Downey both registering a brace of points each before powerful full-forward Grimes latched onto a ball down the right and unleashed a piledriver shot across goalkeeper Ciaran Cunningham to the net. It panned out that way too with Louth, admittedly aided by a stiff wind, bursting out of the blocks and going a long way to putting this encounter beyond Carlow inside just 20 minutes. Playing with the stiff wind initially in a game delayed by 10 minutes due to congestion on the principal route into Navan from Louth, Mickey Harte's men racked up a big early lead thanks to goals from Grimes and Byrne and they finished off Carlow with three more second-half majors.

Louth overpower Carlow to secure quarter-final clash with Kildare (Irish Examiner)

The favourites faced into the wind in the second-half and their task became more difficult when Byrne was replaced in the 43rd minute with an apparent injury. A couple of Niall Hickey and Darragh Foley points lifted the travelling Carlow support but Louth's second goal was a hammer blow in response and left the 2010 Leinster finalists eight points clear. Broderick received an All-Star nomination later that year but retired after the 2021 Championship and a young Carlow side with three Championship debutants missed not just Broderick's quality but his experience. It panned out that way too with Louth, admittedly aided by a stiff wind, bursting out of the blocks and going a long way to putting this encounter beyond Carlow inside just 20 minutes. They led by 1-05 to 0-01 at that stage with Mulroy and Ciaran Downey both registering a brace of points each before powerful full-forward Grimes latched onto a ball down the right and unleashed a piledriver shot across goalkeeper Ciaran Cunningham to the net. Mickey Harte's first win in the Championship as Louth manager came at a canter as the Division 3 league champions maintained their strong form and cruised through to the Leinster SFC quarter-finals.

Joe Carroll: Make or Break championship Sunday to come in Navan ... (Dundalk Democrat)

Headline: First of Louth's two guaranteed championship outings coming up on Sunday There's no back door in championship football this year, just as ...

It clearly wasn’t a good spring for the team in the multi-coloured jerseys. As said, this is the competition Louth are set to contest. The All-Ireland is further down the line, so let’s park it until then. The line-up for each won’t be finalised until the provincials are decided. It would require the four provincial finals being contested by none of the teams included above. (Kilkenny have been that busy winning hurling titles they are not bothered with the big ball game anymore.)

Louth sleepwalk to Leinster quarter-final with five-goal display (Independent.ie)

Louth sleepwalked to their maiden championship victory under Mickey Harte in Navan on Sunday, hitting five goals in a match for first time since the 2019 ...

Mulroy hadn’t his best game of the season by any means, though his thirst for turnovers never quenched and he had a direct hand in four of the five goals. So notwithstanding the opposition, it was refreshing to see a Wee team take hold of a major game with such professionalism and assurance. "We were exposed a number of times in the first half and that's a cause for concern. Maybe the way we were overpressing to try to get the scores, when you do that there is going to be green grass behind you. Referee Niall Cullen appeared to take pity on the minnows and this was reflected in the lob-sided free count, which closed at 17-8. "We’re disappointed with the performance in many aspects.
