The image of St George also adorns many of the memorials built to honour those killed during World War One. The George Cross, named after the king, bears the image of St George vanquishing the dragon. A feast day of St George has been celebrated in England for hundreds of years on April 23. During the Third Crusade in 1199, King Richard I visited the tomb of St. George in Lydda on the eve of battle. The dragon slaying was a myth, he wasn't even English and never actually visited the country. Every year on April 23 we celebrate St George's Day in honour of England's patron saint.

Google Marks Saint George's Day With A Special Doodle (NDTV)

Saint George's Day also known as the Feast of Saint George is celebrated by Christian communities across the world on April 23.

The incident is also reflected in the illustrations, art and sculptures dedicated to the saint. So, why the red rose? Tech giant Google joined the celebration on Saturday by dedicating a Doodle to mark the occasion.

Judoka Kelly Petersen-Pollard added: “It is amazing to be here with Team England celebrating St George’s Day in my hometown. The thought of not being eligible this year to represent my country in competition, especially with Birmingham 2022 on the competition calendar, was heart-breaking. I promise the NEC will be rocking from the moment that first bell rings!”

St George's flag takes over Birmingham Town Hall for St George's Day (Birmingham Live)

Judoka Kelly Petersen-Pollard added: “It is amazing to be here with Team England celebrating St George’s Day in my hometown. The thought of not being eligible this year to represent my country in competition, especially with Birmingham 2022 on the competition calendar, was heart-breaking. “Whenever I compete, it tends to be internationally in European countries. I promise the NEC will be rocking from the moment that first bell rings! The main attraction was a giant St George flag which adorned the side of Birmingham’s Town Hall building and measured 52.25m wide by 8.2m high.
