Thursday's golf: Cantlay and Schauffele open with 59 to lead Zurich ... (The Detroit News)

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele combined to shoot a 13-under 59 in fourballs Thursday to lead the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

She had a triple bogey on the par-3 fourth. She saved par on the final two holes, making a 6-footer on the par-4 17th and blasting out of the front bunker for a tap-in on the par-3 18th. Top-ranked Jin Young Ko had a 71 in the morning. Turns out there was a car in front of him that had broken down, and as Lipsky went to change lanes he said the driver behind him slammed on the brakes and hit him. The 28-year-old from Kentucky is winless on the tour. Former Southern California player Allisen Corpuz and Amy Olson aced the 134-yard 18th. The surprise was Garrigus and Gainey, both sponsor exemptions, joining the group at 61. I think the other two drivers were fine,” Lipsky said. She won the 2013 U.S. Women’s Amateur and took the 2015 NCAA individual title at Alabama. “Yeah, I was a little bit of a hectic beginning to the week.” I don't think Pat has, either. “I haven't done it before.

On a day where the old Zurich Classic record, 60, was tied, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay fired a 59 at TPC Louisiana on Thursday.

So the buffer, we’re only one shot ahead, but we are going into a format on Friday that we really like,” Cantlay said. “I think Xander and I really like alternate shot. “Yeah, I mean, just trying to make a birdie on par-5 like every other week.” Schauffele buried a 12-footer on No. 1 for birdie, Cantlay then made eagle on 2, then each of them made two more birdies going out to turn with a 7-under 29. After three consecutive pars, Schauffele took the lid back off after sticking his approach to two feet on 16. AVONDALE, La. — A lot was made this week of the Viktor Hovland/Collin Morikawa team, and deservedly so.

2022 Zurich Classic: Cantlay and Schauffele Make History In ... (Pro Golf Now)

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele got off to a lightening fast start at the 2022 Zurich Classic on Thursday, and in the process made history.

For Schauffele, he will be hoping that this week is not only one where he breaks records, but also one that will “Kickstart” the rest of his year. It was the lowest four-ball score a team has ever produced during one round of play at the Zurich Classic. Xander has just one top 10 finish in 2022 and he has missed the cut in two of his previous four starts prior to this week.

2. Incredible timing: From the "you definitely cannot make this stuff up" files, Robert Garrigus getting into contention in the week when it was disclosed that he's probably going to go and play in the LIV Golf Invitational -- a rival league to the PGA Tour -- is incredible. I love the Scheffler/Palmer pairing at 14-1 as well as Hovland/Morikawa at 16-1 given how easily they could shoot 57 or 58 on Saturday in the other four-ball format of the week. The bigger story here is that Cantlay and Schauffele have a head start on a field in which they were already the co-favorites. That alternate shot format is the same format in which Cantlay and Schauffele went 2-0-0 in last year's Ryder Cup The trio at T6 is the one to watch. They're very much alive going into Round 2 and should thrive in alternate shot on Friday. "It's just the first quarter," Cantlay said. "It counts for me," said Schauffele of the 59 which set a new Zurich Classic scoring record. Thursday was one of two four-ball sessions so scoring dipped into the low 60s (and lower) with Friday's alternate-shot format sure to inflate those scores ahead of the weekend. After going out in 29, their round stalled a bit halfway through the second nine before they birdied the last three in a row for the magic number. A fun first day of the 2022 Zurich Classic has resulted in an interesting leaderboard. Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay (-13): The favorites were who we thought they were.
