Exclusive: McClaren will be appointed as one of two new assistants - as club look to press ahead with huge summer rebuild.

United currently have an eclectic mix of back-room coaches, including Ferguson’s former assistant, Mike Phelan, and technical director, Darren Fletcher, who has been assisting Ralf Rangnick on matchdays but has been told by the interim manager not to shout instructions at the players. With no prior experience of English football and the Premier League, Ten Hag believes McClaren’s vast experience could prove invaluable. Kalvin Phillips, of Leeds, Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni, Christopher Nkunku at RB Leipzig, Brighton’s Yves Bissouma, Ruben Neves from Wolves and John McGinn of Aston Villa are some of the midfielders that have been scouted. “We need to get back to being the huge club that we are,” he said. “We really need to put a lot of work in. We still need to meet our objectives on this season of course, too.”
