The Kardashians and the enduring appeal of reality TV (RTE.ie)

The first family of reality TV is back with a new show – and audiences will no doubt lap it up, says Prudence Wade.

"You’ll speak to a lot of people, and they’ll recognise one of the sisters as someone they could be friends with in real life. Forging relationships in the real world is hard work too – so it might be easier to just watch these shows for some people. Through the Kardashians, they can vicariously live that life – and that’s a powerful form of escapism." It can act like a balm for your brain, particularly when times are stressful. This has potentially been amplified over the pandemic too, especially when we weren’t able to be with our actual friends and family. But what is it about watching the lives and dramas of ludicrously rich people that is so captivating?

'The Kardashians' Series Premiere: Kim's Sex Tape Déjà Vu (RECAP) (TV Insider)

[WARNING: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for The Kardashians Season 1 Episode 1, “Burn Them All to the F***ing Ground”]. Well, it's here.

Kylie’s appearance in the episode is brief. Scott didn’t appear in the episode. During the barbecue, Kim and Kanye West‘s son, Saint, runs up to Kim giggling because a picture of her showed up on his iPad via Roblox. It’s a good thing Saint can’t read yet, because the caption on the photo of Kim’s crying face claimed there was no footage of her sex tape soon to be released. It doubles as the opening sequence and establishing scene, with short comments from each of the family members teasing what’s to come in the episode. But Kim mentions that she ran into Davidson at the Met Gala and asked if she should be nervous about hosting, and he apparently boosted her confidence about it. Khloé catches up with Scott and gauges where he stands emotionally in response to Kourtney and Travis’s relationship. Khloé is friendly with her ex-boyfriend, Tristan. In fact, she says they’re closer than ever and friendship and co-parenting is working out great. The legal debacle in the new pilot is the inspiration behind The Kardashians Season 1 Episode 1 title, “Burn Them All to the F***ing Ground.” If you’ve been a fan of the family since the beginning, you’ll know the sex tape was the subject of Keeping Up With the Kardashian‘s pilot episode. The whole family comes together for a small barbecue at Kim’s house early in the episode. They’re not married or even engaged yet in The Kardashians series premiere, but viewers learn how they fell in love. The Kardashians officially debuted on Hulu on Thursday, April 14.

'The Kardashians' return to reality TV — their best publicity tool (NBC News)

Less than a year after they ended their hit E! series, the Kardashian-Jenner family are back to sell the world their best product of all: their lives.

“I see the show as both a promotional arm but also the sort of unvarnished glimpse,” Kennedy said. “There’s these real-world moments where it feels like, ‘oh, this is, you know, this is a good show,’ right?” Kennedy said. Moving their lives to a streaming platform most likely demands a lesser time commitment than nearly two dozen episodes a season while boosting the production value and offering tighter storytelling. “It’s a perfect cash cow, to get all these people to come on board and to be shown,” Deraney said. But not every reality show goes on for 20 seasons just to revive months later. But Khloe, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian came together during season 20 and decided not to renew their contracts for the show.

Essential Episodes of 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' to Watch ... (Collider.com)

Said moment occurs as Kim Kardashian, then only known for her friendship with Paris Hilton and her sex tape, poses for Playboy as her mother/manager, Kris ...

This episode deserves its spot on the list for the sheer drama, marking the first time punches are thrown (that we can recall) among the Kardashian sisters. Khloé considers her future with her boyfriend Tristan Thompson, who she’d reconciled with after his big betrayal in Season 16. The finale delivers on what it should, with the family burying a time capsule and reflecting on the last couple of decades. This one is for those who might want to take a peek at Kim’s relationship with ex-husband Kanye West, with whom she’s been on the receiving end of all kinds of internet drama in recent months. Khloé found love again with Tristan Thompson, with whom she has daughter True. Tristan cheated on her quite publicly just before she went into labor, but she forgave him, and they decided to work it out after becoming new parents. One of the most gasp-inducing moments comes when a drunk and belligerent Scott shoves money into the mouth of an employee of the restaurant the family is eating at. Kim falls into hysterics over this, and the ever-calm Kourtney delivers her iconic quote with her signature deadpan delivery. What follows is the kind of Kim Kardashian moment that you just wouldn’t get to see nowadays. As Kim, still relatively new as a sex symbol before she eventually became established as the sex symbol, poses nude, legendary sleezeball Hugh Hefner looks on as Kris declares that Kim is “doing amazing, sweetie”. Despite being totally cemented in the year 2007, this episode certainly has a legacy that has endured. Kim bursts through the door, swinging around her oversized purse, and yells “Don’t be fucking rude!”, giving us another meme for the ages. Khloé, Kim and Kris sit together in the backseat, and Kim is busy taking selfies with a digital camera. Last year, Keeping Up With the Kardashians ended, and with it, an era.

The Top 5 Takeaways from the Premiere of Hulu's <i>The ... (HarpersBAZAAR.com)

We see Kourtney's relationship with Travis Barker blossom, Kim navigate family life while separated from Kanye West, and Khloé keep Tristan Thompson at a ...

We even see glimpses of Barker planning his October proposal to the eldest Kardashian sister. In the first two episodes, Khloe still seems to be debating what role Tristan Thompson should play in her life. When the two aren't glued at the hip, they're planning out how to gradually blend their families together. While Kylie was famously tight-lipped about her first pregnancy with daughter Stormi (whom she shares with rapper Travis Scott), The Kardashians sees the youngest sister proudly show off her second baby bump while at home and at work, with her family fawning over her at every moment. The series has been described as an "all-access pass" into the lives of the Kardashians, as well as a chance "to reveal the truth behind the headlines," but thus far the first two episodes mostly show us more of what we already know. But because the family is constantly in the headlines, it doesn't really feel as if we're witnessing anything new.

'The Kardashians' Showrunner Teases How Hulu Series Will ... (Variety)

'The Kardashians' showrunner Danielle King reveals what to expect on the famous family's new Hulu series.

It was a lot of texting, and it was just a lot of covert activity. Kourtney did not know that her entire family was there, so when she came up to the suite where the family was, it was a whole family affair. How will that personal matter be dealt with on the show? They’re really good about not censoring themselves, and always looking at it as a producer, not as a person who is in the show. In a world where there can be so much ugliness, in terms of people expressing hate on the internet or just the judgment that is on their lives, they have an amazing ability to rise above it and it’s refreshing. Something I knew, in a peripheral way, is how much backlash the family can get from the press and that there are people that bully, but the family has an incredible resilience. Reading about it in the news is one thing, but then you tune in, it’s like, “Oh, that’s what Kim was thinking, that’s what Khloé was thinking.” Now, I’m getting what really happened. Does the paparazzi get in the way of production? And then, when you find out that it is the Kardashians, then you look at it a bit differently.” Why do you think there is this intense interest to tune into their lives, even though the ending of the story has essentially already been given away? “I will get a text or a call from one of the family members and they’ll say, ‘Hey, this is going on. “That’s the approach that we wanted to have.”

Keeping Up With The Kardashians' Pete Davidson References (Vulture)

Pretty BDE for Pete to be wearing a Thom Browne dress in his first public interaction with Kim Kardashian before dating. He was merely Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson, who had recently ended a relationship with Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor. Here in the future, we know that after Kim appears on Lorne Michaels’s dating show — where they kissed as a joke — she and Davidson made it official amid her divorce from Kanye West. The family’s new Hulu series begins with Kim focused on “working on law school, Skims, and being a mom.” But they still manage to work a Pete reference in, teasing the arc that anyone who has been in a grocery-store-checkout lane knows is coming. Kim Kardashian wasn’t dating current boyfriend Pete Davidson when The Kardashians first began filming in September 2021.

The Kardashians are back! But did they ever really go away? (The Guardian)

The richest part of the new Hulu show is witnessing snippets of their now gravitational celebrity orbit, however mediated – the familiarity with which famous performers from James Corden to Amy Schumer enter and exit the screen. All of this buoys and buffets the show, which in and of itself is as bland as their monochrome ath-leisure suits and glossy nude lips. Of course the “for better or for worse” paeans to KUWTK’s end have become accessories to the start of something new: The Kardashians, the family’s new reality show on Hulu, born from a deal worth an estimated $100m. (The family now means: Kris, Kourtney, Kim and Khloé Kardashian, and Kendall and Kylie Jenner, as well as their numerous children and current or ex romantic partners. Since KUTWK premiered in 2007, the Kardashians have become the avatars and drivers of American culture on innumerable fronts, among them: impossible beauty standards, the aesthetic of an entire dominant platform (Instagram), the democratized accessibility of fame, image manipulation (how many times have they denied blatant photo-shopping and cosmetic alterations?), the unreality of reality TV, the relentless drive to turn everything into profit, the currency of undefeated shamelessness. Rob Kardashian and Caitlyn Jenner are not involved.) The latest cog in the Kardashian-Jenner mega-corporation is a sleeker, cannier version of the original rooted in the same propagandistic DNA though, in the only two 45-minute episodes made available to critics, said narrative spinning seems half-heartedly applied. The eulogizing began as soon as the Kardashian-Jenner family announced the end of their flagship reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians (KUWTK), after 14 years in 2020.

Kim Kardashian Considered Kanye West as Her 'SNL' Musical Guest (Variety)

In the premiere of "The Kardashians," Kim Kardashian reveals that she considered having Kanye West as her "SNL" musical guest.

“I ran into Pete Davidson at the Met Gala, and I was like, ‘I am so scared, I don’t know what I signed up for,'” Kardashian says in the episode. — but Kardashian shares that he gave her advice before she came onto “SNL,” which was the night they kissed on-screen during a skit for the comedy show. In the episode, as she’s nervously getting ready for “Saturday Night Live,” Kardashian admits she was upset by a tweet from Debra Messing — who Kardashian simply calls “a girl from ‘Will & Grace'” — that was critical of Kardashian hosting the iconic show. “I will, as of now, and hopefully always, take the high road,” she elaborated in an interview last month. But, as she’s pondering, she tells her stylist, “It would be so cool for the kids to see mom and dad together on ‘SNL.'” “I’m kind of going back and forth, since Kanye’s album is out,” Kardashian says in the episode, after she tells her family that Lorne Michaels invited her to host the show.

Does Pete Davidson Appear in Hulu's 'The Kardashians'? (Newsweek)

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson are officially dating and fans want to know if the comedian will make an appearance in Hulu's "The Kardashians."

In a follow-up tweet, she said she was "shocked to learn through the press" she was not included in the show, writing: "Of course no bad blood. Fans will have to wait and see. But I was shocked to learn through the press that I was explicitly excluded from the new show." With that said, I cannot emphasize enough how happy I am for my family that it continues!" To be able to work with my family for all those years, and connect with the fans, it was incredible. And doing the show for almost 20 seasons was one of the highlights of my life.

All our burning questions about The Kardashians (The Week Magazine)

The new series is expected to include some of the original Kardashian-Jenner clan — that would be Kris, 66; Kourtney, 42; Kim, 41; Khloé, 37; Kendall, 26; and ...

Kylie has her Kylie Cosmetics company, Khloé is the face of Good American, and Kendall is a runway model. She could be planning her public apology on the new series. That's the big question. Scott has been a staple of KUWTK for years, but that might be about to change with the new boundaries Kourt could set — after all, she is a married woman now and she can't continue playing house with Scott. However, this wouldn't be a Kardashian romance if the leach-like baby father wasn't around — and unfortunately, he comes in the form of Scott. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the summer of 2020, Us Weekly broke the news that "there was trouble in paradise" for Kim and Kanye, who wed in 2014.
