She was the founder of Fundació Montserrat Caballé, an organization to support young talent in Barcelona. She received nominations for the Grammy award five times and won her first Grammy in 1968. She was known not only for her music but also for her larger-than-life personality. According to a leading US publication company, The Washington Post Bel canto is described as the ‘quintessential way to sing opera’. She then went on to perform with the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, and Vienna State Opera. The audience used to love her for her rare bel canto vocal technique.

She won the Grammy award for Best Classical Vocal Performance in 1968. She made her American debut in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall in New York City on 20 April 1965, replacing the pregnant Marilyn Horne and earning a 25-minute standing ovation. After his death, she always wore a red ribbon on her lapel to promote Aids research. “When Caballe began her first aria, there was a perceptible change in the atmosphere,” critic John Gruen wrote of the performance in The New York Herald Tribune. A Newsweek review of her performance that same year in another Donizetti opera, Roberto Devereux, noted: “Her fiery temperament so dominated the stage that the other able singers seemed made of papier-mache.”

Caballé suffered a stroke in Yekaterinburg during her tour in Russia on 20th October 2012 and was quickly transferred to the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona.
