If Liverpool can see out their 3-1 advantage against Benfica they will face Villarreal in the Champions League semi-final.

The final at the Stade de France in Paris is set for May 28th. There’s also the small matter of Benfica, underdogs with nothing to lose and everything to gain, who could write their names into the history books of the Champions League with a comeback against Liverpool under the Anfield lights. Bayern, meanwhile, are nine points clear in Germany.

Overall, only Real Madrid have won more of their first 100 games in the Champions League (57). The only team to have failed to record a shot on target across two legs in this period was Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003-04 semi-finals against FC Porto. A good basis, but if they score one - like we felt against Inter - the game changes. Yeah, it's the strongest team." Asked if this is the best Liverpool squad he has had, Klopp said: "Yes. Since I'm here we've always had great teams. "I always try to get in the other coaches' shoes and there's different ways of expressing what you think and what you believe in every game. "We felt it when they scored last week. On that occasion Atletico showed little attacking intent and spent most of the game sitting back in the hope of frustrating Pep Guardiola's men. For the passion all the fans they have, there will be moments they will be so aggressive and create problems. We adapt and if we're losing we go with everything to get it back. We try to see the score in the last 5-10 minutes what it is. The fact he's back is incredible and we have a big schedule until the end of the season.

Madrid had renewed impetus and almost scored, Benzema’s looping header at the back post dropping onto the crossbar. Into extra time and Madrid found another gear, Vinicius finally finding space to tear into. VAR spotted Alonso had controlled with his hand and when the decision was reversed, the Bernabeu erupted. But Chelsea were celebrating a third when Marcos Alonso pivoted round Dani Carvajal’s sliding tackle and slammed into the top corner. Benzema, Modric and Toni Kroos tried to wrestle back control but Chelsea’s authority was even more pronounced early in the second half and within minutes they had a second, Rudiger rising high at the back post to head in from a corner. But the 36-year-old Modric intervened with another moment of genius to add to the very best of his glittering career, a sumptuous pass with the outside of his right foot setting up Rodrygo to volley in and sending a nerve-shredding contest into extra time.

Champions League semi-finals: Real Madrid and Villarreal first ... (UEFA.com)

Real Madrid and Villarreal are the first teams through to this season's UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

Raúl Albiol leads a back line which lays the foundation for a side that has mastered the art of inviting their opponents on to them before transitioning quickly from defence into attack. Unai Emery's side desperately missed the injured Gerard Moreno for much of the campaign, but you have to give them credit for getting this far with their talismanic goalscorer reduced to a cameo role for large parts. When you throw in the fact they've already knocked out Juventus and Bayern, no less, anything is possible now they are in only their second ever Champions League semi-final. He scored Madrid's 1,000th European Cup goal against Shakhtar earlier this campaign then turned around their last-16 tie with Paris with a second-half hat-trick before striking the decisive blow in extra time against the Blues. Working within a 4-3-3 template, Madrid have a strong spine starting with Thibaut Courtois and running through centre-back Éder Militão to the experienced midfield trio of Casemiro, Modrić and Kroos with all that technical quality, vision and experience. How is it possible to lose at home to Sheriff, and then reach the last four with a gargantuan performance against Paris followed by an epic tie against Chelsea? The route map helps explain.

Liverpool came out fast and took control of the tie with two goals in the first 34 minutes. The Uruguayan has since followed that up with a hat-trick in the 3-1 home win over Belenenses, taking his tally for the season to 29 in just 35 matches. Another Liverpool attacker, Luis Diaz, had a goal and an assist in the first leg which didn't go down well at all with the hosts given that the Colombian used to play for Benfica's big rivals Porto. Sadio Mane has wheeled away in celebration in his last two matches after scoring the second goal in Benfica and the second equaliser against City. Benfica had gone into the first game against Liverpool on the back of a 3-2 away defeat to Braga. Benfica fought well at times but Liverpool had too much firepower and are now huge favourites to book a place in the semi-finals for the third time in five years.

Los Blancos have an unexpectedly healthy lead going into the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final game, but a semi-final place is not assured.

Bayern Munich also arrived in Madrid in 2017 after losing at the Allianz Arena. They forced extra time, but Los Blancos went through to the next round. And it is also important to remember that the away goals rule that has decided many a European tie over the years has been scrapped this year. Real Madrid welcome Chelsea to the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night with, some would say, more than half the work already done.
