How The Northman subverts a tired Viking movie cliche (digitalspy.com)

The Northman director Robert Eggers explains how his Viking movie avoids machismo and right-wing stereotypes. Plus Anya Taylor-Joy on female rage.

Eggers has said that he's surprised he made such a macho film, and while yes it is macho in the sense that there are a lot of men doing manly things (fighting? Tearing out each other's throats? Instead, it is framed, as Eggers described: from the centre, outwards, and everything else around these characters unfolds exactly as the Norns of fate would have it. "The spiritual world that the Vikings believed in – how the Norns of fate had chosen this path for him. Whatever it is men do), the film itself isn't pegged to that alienating narrowness of contemporary masculinity. "With this film, unlike my other movies, the camera's always moving – there is this propulsive aspect to the actual cinematic language," he says. Where Amleth needs to fulfil his destiny, Olga struggles futilely against the Norns of fate. That core tenet of her personality, Taylor-Joy said, comes from the very human desire to effect change on your circumstances. Eggers saw his opening when he discovered the story of Amleth, the tale that inspired Shakespeare to write Hamlet, and went on to inspire countless retellings of this very basic human tragedy. But it isn't enough to want to make a film that doesn't pander in machismo or patriarchal tropes – one has to then do it. But not fate as we know it, the way it's used in rom-coms. It all changed when he went to Iceland. "The landscapes are so incredibly inspiring that I finally picked up some Icelandic sagas and started to read them." They exist at each end of the balance of power.

Alexander Skarsgard: True Blood Paved Way for The Northman ... (Den of Geek)

Exclusive: Alexander Skarsgård talks about how his time as Eric on True Blood helped inspire him to become The Northman.

The True Blood scene that Skarsgård seems to likely be referring to is from the second season, which aired in 2009 and featured a flashback to Eric’s transformation into vampirism on an ancient Norse battlefield. “The harshness and stark nature.” This eventually led Skarsgård, who was by then working with Hereditary producer Lars Knudsen, to first approach Eggers about making a movie centered on men from the true North. So I said, ‘Well, I have a Viking movie for you,’ even though I didn’t really.” “Shooting that flashback on True Blood 10 years ago, I think it triggered something where I was having an amazing time. Truly, he is quick to point out that his childhood country home in Sweden was surrounded by runestones, which were typically medieval memorials for long gone Vikings who fell in glorious battle.

The Northman: film reviews, UK cinema release date, 2022 movie ... (NationalWorld)

The film takes inspiration from Scandinavian folklore and Shakespeare, and looks to be one of 2022's grittier movies.

“The sagas often read like action movies from the Eighties in their fight scenes. “I only allude to sexual violence, I don’t show it. As the UK entered lockdown days before the start of the main shoot, the team had to recreate the Scandinavian look and feel of the film in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as well as rethinking locations and set building. “You really have to consider every choice you’re making very carefully,” he says. Set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century, Amleth witnesses the murder at the hands of his evil uncle as a child, and is unable to let the crime go unpunished. The cast of The Northman is filled with Hollywood stars, including Alexander Skarsgard who is playing the role of Amleth, and helped create the movie with director, Robert Eggers.

"One of the pieces we wrote was intended to emulate the sound of a bullroarer; an ancient, relatively humble looking instrument used in sacred rituals, or in battle to intimidate enemies. Eggers is a research-heavy director who likes to make sure that the historical worlds he builds feel authentic, and he tasked the composers with using as many traditional instruments as possible to bring "The Northman" to life. "The Northman" is a violent, heart-pounding Viking saga, so it makes sense that the music is equally intense.

'The Northman' Soundtrack Gets Digital and Physical Release Dates (Collider.com)

The digital release coincides with 'The Northman's theatrical release. Alexander Skarsgard and Anya Taylor-Joy The Northman social Image via Focus Features.

A retelling of one of Europe's most influential folktales — which was most likely also the basis for Shakespeare's Hamlet — The Northman will certainly prove to be a disturbing and entertaining experience for viewers, like Eggers' previous work. You can get your hands on the soundtrack in its physical form when it's released on July 01, 2022, via Sacred Bones Records. The physical release includes a blood-red vinyl record, posters, and cover art that includes images from the film. "One of the pieces we wrote was intended to emulate the sound of a bullroarer; an ancient, relatively humble-looking instrument used in sacred rituals, or in battle to intimidate enemies. The Northman soundtrack comes from composers Robin Carolan and Sebastian Gainsborough. Eggers chose the two composers specifically to create a unique and authentic soundtrack for the story of Viking revenge. The Northman tells the story of Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), a Viking prince who embarks on a mission to avenge his murdered father. There’s no risk of that happening when you only have a few primary instruments to draw upon." The Northman soundtrack will be made available on Digital on April 22, 2022, and the film will be released in theaters on the same day. For this we attempted to do the same thing, but the twist being that we used a huge, 40 piece string ensemble in order to do so. The unsettling tone of the soundtrack is perhaps one of the most consistent features of the film and its construction. Both composers previously worked almost exclusively in electronic music, so their work on The Northman served as a stark departure. Of the adjustments made for the film's soundtrack, Carolan stated, "Electronic music has almost limitless potential when it comes to making sounds and that’s obviously an incredible thing, but you can also go down the wormhole and get lost in it sometimes. Of the tone of their soundtrack, Carolan and Gainsborough stated, "Robert wanted the world of The Northman to feel harsh and uncomfortable, and for everything to feel like it was caked in mud and dry blood, so it was crucial for the score to mirror that."

Robert Eggers' The Northman offers Shakespearean drama ... (The A.V. Club)

The director of The Witch and The Lighthouse works on his biggest canvas yet for a brutal, beautiful tale of vengeance.

It features both see-it-to-believe-it “fuck yeah!” gruesomeness in its 10th Century tale and the kind of historical and mythical attention to detail to be expected from Eggers, the A24-endorsed, indie genre virtuoso of The Witch and The Lighthouse as he plays in a $90 million sandbox for the first time. Regardless, The Northman is still a lot of fun scene by scene, even without a strong through line connecting them all. The Northman offers a lot to enjoy in what is a lot of movie. By comparison, the simplistic script by Eggers and Swedish poet and writer Sjón (Lamb) avoids going too deeply into its characters’ untamed urges while its story taps the same well that Shakespeare drew from for Hamlet. A sequence of high-octane drama ensues between mother and son, as Kidman and Skarsgård stage the most bizarre Big Little Lies reunion imaginable. From Icelandic family sagas to Norse legends to supernatural myths, Eggers plays with the rich material at his disposal with a wide-eyed enthusiasm that’s both disarming and awe-inspiring.

'The Northman' Review: “Marrying Brutality & Myth” (Full Circle Cinema)

Scant few things about the tale of The Northman are new. Drawn from the legend of Viking Prince Amleth, the revenge narrative at the core of writer-director ...

The Northman will surely follow. It’s about what you find, and The Northman finds blood and rapture. Many will question what the point is of such an exercise. The Northman feels alive. It takes the myth of Amleth apart, looks at what makes it tick, and uses all the effective tools available in the modern age to give it a primal feel. Yet really, it’s the supporting cast that adds a texture to the adventure. If The Northman draws another parallel with Shakespeare, at least Shakespeare as it’s meant to be performed, it’s in wonderfully over-the-top performances. Words are as blunt and cutting as the violence. Following the sacking of a small village, he has a meeting with an oracle of sorts (Björk) and points Amleth in the right direction. Morbid as it may be, the masterful action on display brings the past into a present sensibility. Now you have a sense of the virile brush he uses on The Northman‘s aged canvas. The Northman maintains a strong balance between brutality and mysticism.

“I was initially not interested in Vikings. The macho stereotype and the right-wing misappropriation of Viking culture made me not excited about them,” the director says. “But he had fallen in love with the island and the culture and Norse mythology, so we started talking about Scandinavia, Viking culture, and we ended up talking about that for two hours. Hopefully the audience will feel that we’re actually out there and it feels more immersive.” “It was brutal, but I think it had to be,” the actor says. As far as the other physical violence goes, it’s tricky, because it is a culture that celebrates the violence. “We were supposed to talk about something else,” Skarsgard recalls, “but he had just come back from Iceland, with no intention of making a Viking movie.
