On Leeside, a strong tradition of locally-owned, independent and quality coffee shops has proved to be resilient to the big chains like Starbucks, Pret and Costa, which totally dominate high streets in the UK. And Pret will look to succeed where the likes of Starbucks and Costa - which has just a handful of outlets in Cork - have failed to make a major impact.

Carebrook Partnership Ltd has worked with Pret for three decades and runs many of its stores in London where it is a common sight on city centre streets. "There has long been demand from our neighbours on the island of Ireland to bring Pret’s freshly prepared food and organic coffee, and now with the backing of Carebrook Partnership Ltd we’re able to do so." The outlets in the Republic and Northern Ireland will be rolled out by Carebrook Partnership Limited under a franchise arrangement.

Carebrook Partnership is a long-serving franchise partner with Pret a Manger overseeing many shops in London, including Camden, Belsize Park and Finchley.

"We’ve been working with Pret for over three decades, ever since they arrived in London," Mr Loughran said. The first shop is set to open on Dawson Street in Dublin this summer, creating 25 jobs. Minority co-owner Ray McNamara from Dublin has 25 years of experience in the Irish food industry, including ownership of Ann’s Bakery.
