Ferris: Rowntree the 'right man for Munster' (RTE.ie)

Stephen Ferris says that Graham Rowntree is the right man for Munster, with his appointment as Head Coach expected to be confirmed over the coming days.

"A lot of the Munster faithful have been wanting Rowntree to take the job. He seems to be in and out of games, and Leinster won the kicking battle. "Connacht got off to a good start. But you just never know with how this competition throws up surprises." "I heard during the week that Vern Cotter's name was in the hat. "That's really appreciated down in Munster, as it is in all clubs.

The latest episode of Rugby Weekly Extra for members of The42 discussed the news that Graham Rowntree is set to be confirmed as Munster's new head coach.

“He knows what Munster people want to see and he probably knows where this team needs to go next. It’s clear what needs to get better and I’m excited to see what he brings.” And in fairness, he knows the players, he knows the personalities, he knows what they’re doing well, and I think that’s probably an advantage given the fact that they obviously weren’t able to go out and sign a head coach with a massive CV. I think he came in as a kind of single figure and had to merge with other personalities. I think there’s a guy in the development system who comes in and does a little bit. “I think, to be honest, it has the potential to be very different,” said Bernard. “He wasn’t part of Johann’s regime coming in here.

He has proven a popular replacement, earning the trust and respect of the Munster players and his appointment as the next head coach will be welcomed internally, though there are still other vacancies to fill. Rowntree was the last to join them on these shores having worked at Harlequins and then Georgia, from where he joined van Graan after the 2019 World Cup, replacing Jerry Flannery as forwards coach. A Leicester Tigers stalwart from 1990 to 2007 he was part of the East Midlands club's famous ABC front row alongside hooker Richard Cockerill and tighthead Darren Garforth that helped win four in a row English Premiership titles between 1999 and 2002, the last two as back-to-back league and Heineken Cup doubles. Current head coach van Graan, who had also not been the top man when he left his role as a Springboks assistant coach and succeeded Rassie Erasmus in 2017, still has a chance to end the 11-year trophy drought. We’ve put down roots here and have no desire to move anywhere else." “Before then I have a role to complete this season and working closely with Johann, Steve, and JP is the immediate focus and priority for now.”

Graham Rowntree is to be confirmed as the next Munster head coach. Rowntree’s appointment is but the first step in an overhaul of the Munster coaching ticket, with the new head coach and the Munster hierarchy now having to identify new coaches to oversee the attack, defence and forwards. Farrell subsequently assumed the same role with Ireland before succeeding Joe Schmidt as head coach, and appointed Catt as his attack coach, while Lancaster has had a profound impact as the senior coach at Leinster and Rowntree will be promoted to Munster as head coach after three seasons as their forwards coach.
