League of Ireland preview: Shelbourne host Shamrock Rovers as ... (Dublin Live)

Shamrock Rovers are back in Tolka Park to face Shelbourne for the first time since Duff, a former Rovers player and coach, took the main job at Shels.

O’Donnell said: “I get a bit of stick at most grounds so I’m well used to it. “They've a new group and they're only getting to know each other. It would be worse if there was no emotion and it was all mundane.” On Friday we had both, which is always nice. A win for the visitors would see them leapfrog the Saints, while a win for the home side would be a start to bridging the seven-point gap to league leaders Derry City. There is plenty of time to turn that around as the first series comes to a close, and Rovers will be eager to get one over on their Dublin rivals.

A lovely passing move carved Shels open all too easily again on 38 minutes; Towell putting Lyons in behind on the left. Scarcely in the game in the first half, a double change on 58 minutes sparked Shels to life and they were level a minute later. Clarke then had to be at his best to push away a drive from Jack Byrne who worked a delightful one-two with Burke to find a pocket of space inside the box to get off his shot.

In the First Division, two second half goals from Phoenix Patterson helped Waterford to a 4-0 win away to Cobh Ramblers. St Pat’s meanwhile dropped two more points in the title race as they were held to a goalless draw by Dundalk at Richmond Park. Aaron Greene’s long-range effort a minute from time gave Shamrock Rovers a 2-1 win away to Shelbourne. The victory moves Rovers to within three points of leaders Derry City.

Cruel but fair result closes gap to three points behind league leaders Derry City.

Tolka was crackling as Boyd immediately won a free for Daniel Hawkins to curl to the back post. A core value of the system, so expertly employed by Bradley’s Rovers, is pressure on the ball. Towell was all action, interchanging with Jack Byrne to appear at centre forward and create Andy Lyons’s third goal of the campaign. Lyons’ neat finish came from relentless pressure as Rory Gaffney also took the ball off McEneff. Duff, gnashing his managerial teeth on the club’s social media channel, fired a warning shot at anyone who fancies another dig at one of his players. The gamble nearly paid out.

If Shamrock Rovers are to retain their title, perhaps they will look back on the final game in the first series as especially pivotal, Aaron Greene's rasper ...

Byrne had a relatively quiet night and Watts came in for the Ireland international with 18 minutes to go. Towell's dink was delicious but Lyons pulled his effort just wide, almost the fitting conclusion to a superb sequence of passes involving most of the Rovers team. At the other end, Graham Burke had Brendan Clarke momentarily worried. That concludes the first series of games and there is, it seems, a genuine title race. JR Wilson's cross was met by Dan Carr who ought to have fashioned a shot with far more power. Ruaidhri Higgins, Derry boss, was in attendance.

With the second half following a similar pattern, Duff looked to his bench to freshen things up and just before the hour mark paid dividends straight away. With the Shels management team of Duff and Joey O’Brien having recent experience of working with the visitors, an intriguing tactical battle started to develop, with Rovers having the majority of the ball. Following on from a huge morale-boosting win on the road in Sligo, Damien Duff’s Shelbourne got off to the worst possible start, conceding in just the second minute of the game

And just when they needed it again, Greene reprised the trick last night in front of the 800 travelling fans in the Ballybough end. Last season, it was the Hoops who were the late, late show stars with winners three times against Longford, once against St Pat’s and once against Drogheda in the final minutes. Not long after he was introduced, Hoops striker Greene scored a belter in the last minute to earn all three points from a game that looked in danger of drifting away from Rovers.

Match Report - Shelbourne 1 Shamrock Rovers 2 - Shamrock ... (Shamrock Rovers F.C.)

Shamrock Rover extended their unbeaten streak in dramatic fashion tonight after beating Shelbourne 2-1 thanks to a last-minute goal from super-sub Aaron Greene.

As the game went towards the 89th minute, Rovers picked up possession deep in the Shelbourne half. Unfortunately for Rovers it was Shels who would strike first in the second half. The Hoops pressed the Shelbourne defence high to win possession, with the ball eventually finding Andy Lyons on the edge of the box who found the bottom right-hand corner brilliantly.

Shamrock Rovers stunner delivers another cruel reality dose to ... (SportsJOE.ie)

Shamrock Rovers headed to Tolka Park and knew they would need to be at their best to see off Shelbourne and keep up the chase on league-leading Derry City.

Aaron Greene fired in a beautiful strike from just outside the 18-yard box, in front of the now hysterical away end. The match turned into a game of pinball in the jittery closing minutes. He was keenly aware of the importance of Boyd in snatching all three points. The booming voice of home support could be heard, ushering the team on in an important period of the game. Shelbourne tails were up and the home crowd was in good voice. Red and white flags swayed in the home end as the Rovers fans let their presence be known through the emission of green and white smoke. This was reflected in the words from Shels fanatics exchanged with myself in Fagans pub, ahead of the match. Shelbourne's, on the other hand, must have felt their spirit was needed in the game, protesting every free kick with calls for a booking. The game kicked off as the sun began to retract and red plastic chairs were filled with jean pockets. Shelbourne were look to capitalise on any panic that may exist in the Shamrock Rovers consciousness, a drop in points could see the title race being teed up for Derry, even at this early stage. Both sets of players jogged out to the pitch to get their team stretches in. A fine but changeable spring evening as sun dappled the finely cut grass at Tolka. Lively music charged from the corroded megaphones, riling up the crowd in anticipation of an eventful fixture.
