It was all set up for a big Connacht finish, but Leinster weren’t in the mood for romance. Carty went for it all with a line-kick minutes later and this time they were rewarded as, after a second penalty, Finlay Fifita forced his way over and the captain converted to make it 23-21. Without a No 9, Leinster were forced to play tight. After a couple of more scrum penalties and a disallowed Lowe score, Keenan extended his side’s lead. "A very tough second half, lots of defence and more physical in a way. Leinster won the game and at times they played some cracking rugby.

The class of James Lowe and the value he brings to Leinster was all too apparent and he was a constant threat throughout. Hansen has returned to Connacht after his Six Nations’ exploits and settled right back in, the magic which saw him capped in his rookie season here all so apparent as he jinked and ran at Leinster, full of a bag of tricks. The height of Gibson-Park’s challenge meant he was on thin ice.

Match report: Connacht Rugby 21 Leinster Rugby 26 (Leinster Rugby)

Leinster Rugby will take a five-point lead into the second leg of their Round of 16 Heineken Champions Cup tie with Connacht at Aviva Stadium.

A turnover from Oisin Dowling meant Hansen triggered a counter up the right. Cian Healy was penalised with the clock in the red for Carty to make it 18-11 at the break. A superb kick to touch from Carty provided the launchpad for two lineouts and a series of drives which ended with Fifita burrowing over for the out-half’s conversion to make it 23-21 in the 62nd minute. The commitment of O’Brien led to a block on Farrell and the battering of Carty back over his own line for a five-metre scrum. Connacht came charging out of the blocks, moving the ball into the hands of Porch and Hansen for Carty to tumble a kick inside the 22. The continuity of Leinster kept the questions coming, Keenan arriving on a short line to split the defence and returning the pass he took from Lowe to send the wing home for his second try in the 26th minute.
