10 surprising golfers who missed the cut at the 2022 Masters (Golf.com)

Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka headlined the list of golfers to miss out on a weekend tee time at the 2022 Masters.

He was still on the cut line heading to 18, where he found the fairway bunker, took four shots to reach the green and settled for a double-bogey 6. Surprising because he made just one birdie in two days. It was another altogether when he started hot with an opening two-under 34 on his first nine before playing the next 27 holes in eight over par, including three bogeys in his final five holes to miss the cut by two. That’s no exaggeration: Before this week Spieth had five top-3 finishes in eight Masters starts. Surprising because: He held the 36-hole lead here last year. This year he arrived injured; he suggested he was at 80 percent but that number was likely optimistic. Surprising because: Oosthuizen belongs in a slightly different category because he withdrew due to injury. What he shot: 76-76 (+8) Like Langer, Couples won a Masters in the early 90s. Surprising because: Like Langer, Couples is in his 60s. What he shot: 76-76 (+8) Here are 10 surprising pros who missed the cut, ranked in ascending order of just how surprised we’ll be to miss them this week.

DeChambeau, who has been battling hand and hip injuries for the past few months, was among the biggest names who missed the cut at the 86th Masters on Friday.

"I'm probably around 80% right now," he said. "I'm trying, but it may not be the smartest thing." Koepka, a four-time major champion, missed the cut in each of his last two Masters appearances.

Spieth made a stunning double bogey on the 18th hole to fall below the 2022 Masters weekend cutline.

He was never a factor this week, bombing out with 76-80 (+12) to finish eight shots outside the cut -- and one shot behind 63-year-old Larry Mize (+11). But he splashed two shots into Rae's Creek on the par-3 12th in a scene eerily similar to his crack-up in the final round in 2016, and then doubled 18 to stumble in at 6 over for the event. Among the players to miss the cut: Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.

Only the top 50 and ties make the cut, leaving a number of big names on the outside looking in.

Watch live on CBSSports.com, the CBS Sports App and Paramount+. Spieth wasn't the only past green jacket winner to bite the dust and miss the cut, either. Spieth needed only a par on No. 18 to make it to the weekend but double-bogeyed his final hole, his second such miscue on the second nine to cap a 4-over 76 round.

The opening day of the 86th Masters was one that Brooks Koepka and several others will soon like to forget. Some players had a great time at Augusta on ...

He squandered an opportunity for a birdie on the par 5 15th and finished his round at three-over-par. A once-promising start vanished and Koepka now finds himself needing a much-improved performance on Friday if he wants to be around for the weekend. Then things turned quickly as he began his back nine at Augusta. A player who has excelled at majors by and large throughout the years turned in what can only be described as a very unlike-Brooks performance.

Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau highlight the notable players to miss the 2022 Masters cut at Augusta National.

The Englishman’s game has been on the downward cycle for some time now, his last win coming in the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open. But the 2013 U.S. Open champion seems to perk up at Augusta National – he finished in a tie for second in 2015 and lost in a playoff to Sergio Garcia in 2017. But he made four bogeys and double bogey in a first-round 75 and added four more bogeys in his second-round 74 to finish one shot shy of making the cut. After opening with a 76, he made just one birdie in the second round and signed for his first-ever 80 on the PGA Tour. He has little control on his driver – which along with his putter were his best weapons after he bulked up – and this has put a severe strain on the rest of his game. The four-time major champion, who had 12 top 10s in his last 16 starts in a major, made just one birdie in each of his two rounds and went home after two scores of 75. Remember, this is where he dumped two balls into Rae’s Creek in the final round of the 2016 Masters, his resulting quadruple-bogey 7 wiping out his entire five-shot lead he took to the back nine on Sunday; he wound up second.

Golf villain suffers Masters embarrassment (Wide World of Sports)

Neither Bryson DeChambeau nor Brooks Koepka will stick around for the weekend at Augusta National after fal...

Just as he did in the final round in 2016, Spieth dunked the ball in Rae's Creek in front of the 12th hole twice on Friday on his way to a triple bogey. Perhaps just as troubling, Koepka is trending in the wrong direction at the first major of the year. The player who made a trip through Amen Corner while hitting tennis balls and throwing Frisbees with the comedy sports troupe “Dude Perfect” last month looked far more uncomfortable playing it with a golf club in his hands. He has hit that number just once in 10 chances since and didn't come close in 2022. After laboring through a 4 over on Thursday, things got no better overnight. His card on Friday included a double bogey at the par-4 10th that started with a tee shot that sailed into the trees down the left side of the fairway and left him shrieking “Oh no!”
