Why the U.S. is sanctioning Putin's daughters over his war in Ukraine (The Washington Post)

Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova were targeted after evidence emerged of potential Russian war crimes in Bucha, Ukraine.

The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. The Russian investigative news outlet Proekt reported that Putin has a “secret” third daughter, a teenager whom he fathered with a lover, but the girl’s relationship with Putin has not been clearly established. (The wife and daughter of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov were slapped with U.S. sanctions Wednesday, along with Putin’s daughters.) His official biography published on the Kremlin website lists only the first names of his daughters: Maria, who was born in 1985, and Katerina, born in 1986. The Biden administration has said it believes that many of Putin’s personal assets are hidden with family members. Identified by the U.S. Treasury Department as Putin’s children, both women appear to work with and benefit from the Russian state apparatus.

Recently a group from Amsterdam had appealed to Maria to plead with her father to end the invasion of Ukraine. A sign placed on land owned by the couple read: “Less than 2,000km from your peaceful piece of free land, your father is decimating an entire free country and its people. They continue to study and they work,” Putin had said. Katerina, who uses the surname of her maternal grandmother, studied at St Petersburg State University and Moscow State University and has a master’s degree in physics and mathematics. In 2014, some Dutch neighbours called for her to be expelled from the country after the downing of MH17 by pro-Russian forces over Ukraine. During a press conference in 2019, Putin declined to directly answer a question about his daughters’ growing business clout and their ties to the government. Putin’s elder daughter Maria Vorontsova, 36, is a paediatric endocrinologist, studying the effects of hormones on the body. Putin “always spoiled them, and I had to educate them,” she is cited as saying. Putin has two children, Maria and Katerina, from his marriage to Lyudmila Putina, a former Aeroflot steward whom he divorced in 2013, becoming the first Russian leader to divorce since Peter the Great in 1698. They have never been ‘star’ children, they have never got pleasure from the spotlight being directed on them. “They live in Russia. They have never been educated anywhere except Russia. I am proud of them; they continue to study and are working,” he had said. They were named after their maternal and paternal grandmothers — Maria Ivanovna Putina and Katerina Tikhonovna Shkrebneva, according to the Kremlin biography. The European Union is also expected to follow suit as it discusses imposition of fresh sanctions against Russia among its 27 members.

"Everything is about mutual deterring and should one side - and we consider NATO to be one side - be more powerful than the other, especially in terms of nuclear arms, then it will be considered a threat for the whole architecture of security and it will take us to take additional measures," he said. Mr Peskov said Mariupol is part of the "Luhansk people's republic", which Russia recognises as a separate state, and claimed troops were there "to assist those people who were suffering for eight years from heavy shelling from Ukraine". Put to Mr Peskov that NATO is now stronger not weaker due to the invasion, he said: "We have to rebalance the situation and we have to take additional measures to ensure our own security because we're deeply convinced that NATO is a machine for confrontation, it's not a peaceful alliance. And in the first hint the Kremlin wants to see an end to the war - although in what form is unknown - he said: "Our military are doing their best to bring an end to that operation. He told Sky News' Mark Austin that "we're living in days of fakes and lies" and verified photos and satellite images of dead civilians in the streets of Ukrainian cities were a "bold fake". In a wide-ranging interview with Sky News, Dmitry Peskov denied atrocities had taken place, said NATO was confrontational, accused Boris Johnson of not being "constructive" and said Russia is trying to bring the war to an end soon.

Megyn Kelly said that she immediately detected Vladimir Putin's "obvious manipulation" on her when she interviewed the Russian president in 2018.

In 2018, Kelly traveled to Moscow to speak to Putin as part of a primetime broadcast special on NBC, which hired the former Fox News star. Kelly then recalled how Putin did the same thing to her. Kasparov then recalled a conversation that Putin had with then-President George W. Bush in which the Russian leader tried to talk up his religious bona fides with the born-again Christian.

And they noted that not all Russians who oppose the war oppose Putin. “About half support, half of Russians support him more or less unconditionally, and about one-third, they have some doubts, like sometimes respondents say: ‘I don’t like what is happening, but you should be patriotic in such situations.’” When using the list experiment, however, support for the war dropped to 53 percent. “While it is well known that fear of repression can lead to preference falsification -- i.e., people publicly supporting positions they privately don’t share -- showing that this mechanism is at work is not easy,” the researchers, Philipp Chapkovski and Max Schaub, wrote. Russia media are banned from using the words “war” or “invasion” in describing the war and the invasion.

In early March, the government banned Russian aircraft from U.K. airspace following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and introduced powers to detain such planes, and remove aircraft belonging to sanctioned individuals and entities from the U.K. register. Shvidler, a close associate and business partner of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, was added to the U.K. list of sanctioned individuals at the end of March. UK sanctions target the lavish lifestyles of Putin's daughters (GOV.UK)

New UK sanctions target the daughters of President Putin and his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The UK Sanctions List is updated every time a decision is made to make, vary or revoke a designation. Russia’s narrative that Western sanctions have caused the rise in global food prices is a blatant lie. Russian ships are also banned from UK ports. These designations come into force as new analysis shows the devastating impact of the sanctions imposed on Russia’s economy in recent weeks. An asset freeze prevents any UK citizen, or any business in the UK, from dealing with any funds or economic resources which are owned, held or controlled by the designated person and which are held in the UK. It will also prevent funds or economic resources being provided to or for the benefit of the designated person. But we need to do more.
