Move follows Ireland's expulsion of four senior Russians officials from its embassy in Dublin last week.

Last week Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the four Russian officials were asked to leave because “their activities are not in accordance with the international standards of diplomatic behaviour”. The foreign ministry also demanded the Government “immediately remove the obstacles to the work of the Russian embassy in Dublin and ensure normal conditions for the functioning of our diplomatic mission”, without specifying what this referred to. “This decision to reduce the size of our relatively small embassy in Moscow will significantly reduce our ability to provide services to our citizens in Russia and to maintain diplomatic channels of communication with the Russian Federation.”

“We want to help in any way we can. And I think it is not a question of if they win the war, it is when they will win. We are not a strong military country, so we want to play to our strengths where we can be most effective in terms of our contribution. For now we want to maintain our strong unity of purpose.” We are in this situation with Ukraine and we all have to help Ukraine to win the war. Micheal Martin, speaking in Helsinki, admitted that Ireland will face challenges housing refugees set to arrive into the country.

There will be some sort of foreign peace agreement. “I suppose the reason why we don’t want to expel the Russian ambassador at this stage is that if we get to that point where we’re expelling ambassadors, we could see an end to diplomatic relations between the two countries. It will be difficult in the coming weeks, of that there is no doubt. There will be a ceasefire. “And also, ultimately, there will be peace talks. He said he would rather “get to the point where we have a ceasefire and where we can start to talk about de-escalation of this conflict and coming to a solution”.
