Rachael Blackmore and Minella Times are the focus of attention as the pair bid to repeat last year's historic success on Saturday.
A former favourite for this race – running well to finish fourth– and Dan Skelton’s gelding has winning form over the National fences too, in the Becher Chase. That was all back in 2017, when Blaklion was a spry eight-year-old. A dual Grade One winner and better the further he goes, so a fair chance of a top-10 finish if he rekindles his best form. Lucinda Russell was the last British trainer to win the National, with One For Arthur five years ago, and her runner this year put down an excellent marker with a doughty success in the 2021 Scottish National, when making his sixth start over fences. Seven-year-olds simply don’t win the National these days and while a win in last season’s Thyestes Chase is a plus, he was well beaten off a higher mark in the same race this season. His win in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury in 2019 is one of the best individual pieces of form on offer in this year’s field. Closely matched with Any Second Now on their form in the Bobbyjo Chase in February, when last year’s third gave 8lb to Elliott’s eight-year-old – 1lb more than he will on Saturday – and edged him by a nose. A change of scenery may have helped, having switched from Nicky Henderson to Polly Gundry over the summer, and he was up with the leaders for much of the way in last month’s renewal. That was over two miles and five furlongs, however, and in addition to the question mark over his stamina, the fact he fell on his first attempt over these fences – in the Topham Trophy last season – is another concern. The eight-year-old’s domestic form is rock-solid, however, and Colin Tizzard also resisted the urge to run him at Cheltenham, despite an excellent run in the Ladbrokes Trophy in November that could have persuaded him to aim at the Gold Cup. A sound jumper who goes on any ground, though his stamina is untested at a marathon trip and more dependable stayers can be backed at much the same price. Stamina is unlikely to be an issue – she has looked to be crying out for a test like this for much of her career – but her jumping is generally so-so at best and comes with a tendency to veer sharply right. Looked likely to be a force in the very best races for years to come when he landed the Grade One Betfair Chase in November 2019, but has one win in 10 starts since. Rule The World had not even managed that when he came home in front six years ago, and Run Wild Fred made it plain that stamina will not be an issue when he finished second in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham last time.

A former Grade 1 winner of the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival back in 2016, Blaklion was also a fine victor in the 2017 Becher Chase at Aintree, so he has a track record over the Aintree fences. Has struggled to land a blow this season and has pulled up in both the Welsh Grand National and Edinburgh National, but he's a real dour stayer that will relish the test of this contest, so is of slight interest. Produced a career best at the end of last season by bounding to victory over Run Wild Fred in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse, but has failed to build on that effort and has been out of form of late. Fifth in the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival a few seasons ago, Deise Aba has been a regular in top notch staying handicap chases in recent times and he's racked up three second placed finishes this season, with his only disappointment coming in the Welsh Grand National when he pulled up. Fourth in the Manifesto Novices' Chase at Aintree's Grand National meeting last year, Phoenix Way has continued to blossom over fences this season, and has performed with significant credit in some tough handicap chases. Ninth in the Thyestes Handicap Chase two starts ago, Class Conti was last seen finishing 11th of 12 in the Leinster National, so he needs a lot more to show here. Second at Fairyhouse on his last start for Paul Nolan, Discorama heads to Aintree in decent form, and with the benefit of last year's experience he could be a potential spring from the Irish-trained runners. Last seen finishing second over hurdles, he will come on for that effort and a return to the chasing sphere should bring him on and he's a lively outsider. Having won the 2021 Thyestes Handicap Chase and then a Grade 2 novice chase, Coko Beach looked a potential staying star of the future, but Gordon Elliott's raider has gone off the boil over the last year and will need to bounce back to form to feature here. However, Brahma Bull was pulled up in the Troytown at Navan two starts ago, while he fell in the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham in March, so has some questions to answers in this. A seven-and-a-half length winner that day, Gordon Elliott's charge was next seen chasing home Stattler in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham last month, so will need to improve on that effort. Heads to Aintree in cracking form as beat Escaria Ten in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse, and he could be one of the most solid punting options in a hugely competitive race.

Fortescue, number 40, has been cut to 25-1 (from 33) with William Hill since his place in the line-up was confirmed. Now he's got to go and prove it. Meanwhile, impressive Classic Chase winner Eclair Surf has been shortened to 12-1 (from 14) with most firms. Blaklion will be having his fourth run in the National and will be the oldest runner in the race at the age of 13. It would have been very frustrating to be 4lb well in and not get in.
It will be the 174th edition of the iconic race as a stacked field of horses and jockeys look to make history for themselves, the trainer and owner.

Good Boy Bobby doesn’t, on the face of it, look like a horse that has anything in hand from his 150 official rating, however that doesn’t take into account the fact he is totally unexposed over trips beyond three miles. In the last ten renewals, horses with odds of 66-1, 33-1 and 25-1 have been successful. Emma Lavelle’s talented performer has only tried an extreme trip once in his career. Nigel Twiston-Davies knows exactly what sort of horse is required for this race. His close-to-the-pace run-style is ideal for the demands of the Grand National. Pulled up in the Midlands National on his first start in over a year. Can’t totally blame that on heavy ground because he has won in it before but maybe happier on decent ground. One for Scotland. Won last year’s Scottish National which has been a good guide in the past. Pretty much made all the running in last year’s Irish National to cause a 150-1 upset. Trained for the race since finishing third in last year’s Irish National. Possibly owes his price to the fact that he has been bought by McManus since his last run. Moment of glory came in 2019 Ladbrokes Trophy but now back down to that rating after a year out. Useful staying chaser who has won over the Mildmay course at Aintree and it is amazing how often that liking for the place translates to National course. He used to be a bit keen and was, essentially, a two and a half miler so question mark over trip. Second in the Gold Cup two years ago, he looks made for the trip. Likes to be up there, the softer the better but last mile and a half will be unknown territory. Blew out in his trial, it is hard to see him improving on 12 months ago. Has one stand out piece of form when he beat a below par Tiger Roll 17 lengths in the cross-country at Cheltenham in 2020.

Unfortunately he suffered a heavy fall at the third fence, but he is not out of it if that has not dented his confidence. It is five years since this admirable veteran finished fourth when favourite for the 2017 Grand National. He was brought down in 2018 and finished sixth 12 months ago. However, he was pulled up in last year’s renewal and it would be quite a surprise if he manages to win it at the fourth attempt at the age of 12. Pulled up when all the rage for last year’s renewal and it subsequently transpired he was suffering from a breathing problem. Perhaps a return to better ground and the National fences will rekindle the fire, but it requires a big leap of faith. A third-placed finish in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle offers hope, but he did not run as well at Kelso last time. Leading owner JP McManus has snapped him up since a creditable effort over hurdles at the Dublin Racing Festival and he is undoubtedly a leading contender. Not completely dismissed but he needs to bounce back from a disappointing run in the Bobbyjo and is another who would prefer softer ground. Third in the National Hunt Chase last season behind two Grade One winners and his whole campaign has been focused on this. Had his campaign built around the National Hunt Chase in which he was second and this might be an afterthought. That looks like the best trial for this as Any Second Now was third last year and must go close again but preference is for the younger rival. Here’s how you can watch from home and a guide to all the runners taking part in the Grand National 2022.

Nicky Henderson and Willie Mullins, who sit behind Nicholls in the trainers' title, will be seeking to land a blow in the following Randox Topham Handicap Chase ( 4.05), after all three trainers claimed a win each on the opening day of the Grand National meeting. Saint Calvados has been backed to take on the short-priced favourite in the Marsh Chase ( 3.30), in a bid for success that could cement Nicholls' place at the top of the British trainers' championship. The Venetia Williams-trained Commodore has raced just once this season when cruising to a 15-length success in the Grade 3 Betfair Handicap Chase at Cheltenham in December and will be the trainer's sole runner in the National.

Saturday afternoon brings the world's most famous horse race as 40 contenders set off in this year's renewal of the Grand National at Aintree.
He may cling on for a place. He runs seven, with Farclas scratched, and has even given long-shot Samcro a favourable mention. Delta Work edged Tiger Roll over the banks at Cheltenham, having seemingly had enough of Grade 1 combat. However, he looks likely to not only stay, but improve for it. And it is encouraging that perhaps his most striking victory was achieved in a bumper on good to yielding terrain around this time of year. As a somewhat unintended consequence, the race is now classier than ever, and Longhouse Poet ticks plenty of boxes.

39. Eclair Surf : Ran a blinder just under two lengths behind Win My Wings in the Eider Chase at Newcastle and that form took a major boost when the winner bolted up in the Scottish National last weekend. Finished with a flourish to beat Fiddlerontheroof in 3m Ascot contest in February and not hard to see him running a big race off a light weight. 31. Snow Leopardess : Becher Chase winner who has been the subject of strong market support in recent days. 12. Two For Gold : Career-best effort when second to Fakir D'oudairies in Ascot Chase but now sits on a career-high mark as a result. 4lb lower this time and wasn't a bad prep at Doncaster on ground slower than ideal. 5. Run Wild Fred : Classy novice that stuck to his guns well behind Stattler in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham last month. Due to go up 4lb in future. 30: Cloth Cap : 2020 Ladbrokes Trophy winner who went off favourite for this race 12 months ago when reportedly made a respiratory noise. Also has stamina to prove. 13. Santini : Formerly very smart staying chaser but not quite as good nowadays. Place contender this time. Talented but needs jumping a big worry around here.
