Why the U.S. is sanctioning Putin's daughters over his war in Ukraine (The Washington Post)

Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova were targeted after evidence emerged of potential Russian war crimes in Bucha, Ukraine.

The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. The Russian investigative news outlet Proekt reported that Putin has a “secret” third daughter, a teenager whom he fathered with a lover, but the girl’s relationship with Putin has not been clearly established. (The wife and daughter of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov were slapped with U.S. sanctions Wednesday, along with Putin’s daughters.) His official biography published on the Kremlin website lists only the first names of his daughters: Maria, who was born in 1985, and Katerina, born in 1986. The Biden administration has said it believes that many of Putin’s personal assets are hidden with family members. Identified by the U.S. Treasury Department as Putin’s children, both women appear to work with and benefit from the Russian state apparatus.

Recently a group from Amsterdam had appealed to Maria to plead with her father to end the invasion of Ukraine. A sign placed on land owned by the couple read: “Less than 2,000km from your peaceful piece of free land, your father is decimating an entire free country and its people. They continue to study and they work,” Putin had said. Katerina, who uses the surname of her maternal grandmother, studied at St Petersburg State University and Moscow State University and has a master’s degree in physics and mathematics. In 2014, some Dutch neighbours called for her to be expelled from the country after the downing of MH17 by pro-Russian forces over Ukraine. During a press conference in 2019, Putin declined to directly answer a question about his daughters’ growing business clout and their ties to the government. Putin’s elder daughter Maria Vorontsova, 36, is a paediatric endocrinologist, studying the effects of hormones on the body. Putin “always spoiled them, and I had to educate them,” she is cited as saying. Putin has two children, Maria and Katerina, from his marriage to Lyudmila Putina, a former Aeroflot steward whom he divorced in 2013, becoming the first Russian leader to divorce since Peter the Great in 1698. They have never been ‘star’ children, they have never got pleasure from the spotlight being directed on them. “They live in Russia. They have never been educated anywhere except Russia. I am proud of them; they continue to study and are working,” he had said. They were named after their maternal and paternal grandmothers — Maria Ivanovna Putina and Katerina Tikhonovna Shkrebneva, according to the Kremlin biography. The European Union is also expected to follow suit as it discusses imposition of fresh sanctions against Russia among its 27 members.

The US has imposed sanctions on the Russian leader's children in response to allegations of a civilian massacre at Bucha.

"Yes," replied Mr Putin. "Are you a good grandfather, do you play with them in the garden?" In 2020, Putin told Russian media how the country's coronavirus vaccine had been tested on one of his daughters - but did not reveal who. He added: "They are not involved in business or politics", and revealed that they were both fluent in three European languages. In 2013 Katerina, 35, married Kirill Shamalov, a Russian billionaire who owns a large stake in a gas and petrochemical company, and the son of the co-owner of Rossiya Bank, but the pair have now split. Putin is said to be one of the world’s richest men, but it has been long suspected that his fortune is stashed among family members and associates. President Biden has also targeted Russian banks and elites in a new package of sanctions.

And I think that goes from the senior levels of Russian general staff to the commanders and men in the field." Putin, on the other hand, is seen to have strong support from within Russia, Pothier said, but for how long is uncertain. Ultimately, TS Lombard's Granville said Russia's offensive was likely to become a war of attrition. … Therefore the first stage of these next battles will be characterized by Russia conducting missile attacks and airstrikes on critical and civilian infrastructure," he added. "Clearly Russia is trying to establish a land bridge between Crimea and Russia. If Mariupol falls, Russia will have succeeded." "It's just common sense that soldiering needs to have a goal, and the natural goal for soldering is to get territory. "This may ultimately prove the wiser route for Russia, because by solidifying a frozen conflict it would essentially stop Ukraine from joining the EU or NATO in the future despite any undertakings made not to during peace negotiations." He cited particular concern for Slovyansk and Kramatorsk, two sizable cities situated in the north of the Donetsk Oblast. "It seems to me that this is the biggest single piece of news since the war began," Christopher Granville, managing director of EMEA and global political research at TS Lombard, told CNBC via telephone. "I think from a military point of view, there has to be a question about success and morale. Ukraine's deputy prime minister on Wednesday urged people in the eastern regions of Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk to evacuate amid growing fears of an imminent attack. What are they trying to do?"

Dmitry Medvedev also said Putin's "special military operation" in Ukraine was undertaken in a bid to "demilitarise" and "de-Nazify" the country.

"Both in the national courts of the United States and Europe and in international courts." The ex-Russian leader also said Putin's "special military operation" in Ukraine was undertaken in a bid to "demilitarise" and "de-Nazify" the country. "The goal is for the sake of the peace of future generations of Ukrainians themselves and the opportunity to finally build an open Eurasia – from Lisbon to Vladivostok."

Malofeyev remains at large and is believed to be in Russia. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer to speak on his behalf, the AP reported. Concentration of political power and accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few must be reversed if this country is to prosper," Toqaev wrote. "The country is embarking on an unprecedented decentralization of state power, enhancing checks and balances. The new military assistance is the sixth of arms, equipment, and supplies from Department of Defense inventories for Ukraine since August 2021. The fact of the matter is, I can't speak on Russian television," he said. In a written statement issued shortly afterward, Michel said Aliyev and Pashinian pledged to "move rapidly" toward a comprehensive treaty meant to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The sanctions "are pushing up the price of energy. "Once and for all, we can teach Russia and any other potential aggressors that those who choose war always lose," Zelenskiy said in an address to the Greek parliament. According to Prosecutor-General Iryna Venediktova, the worst situation with civilian casualties is in Borodyanka. Collapsed buildings have not been cleared and the number of victims has not yet been determined. He has rejected the case, insisting that he is being targeted because of his research into the crimes of Stalin's regime. He was acquitted in April 2018, but the Karelia Supreme Court upheld an appeal by prosecutors and ordered a new trial. They also block all transactions that involve any of their property by people in the United States.

Sanctions announced Wednesday also include the daughter and wife of Russian foreign affairs minister Sergei Lavrov. The U.S. also banned Americans from investing in Russia, and targeted Russian financial institutions and Kremlin officials, in response to what President Joe Biden condemned as Russian "atrocities" in Ukraine. read more
