AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau's power game hasn't done him much good at Augusta National. Now, injuries have cut him down to size.
“We’re finally moving in a direction that I feel is positive for me being able to win again,” DeChambeau said. “When you don’t have everybody yelling your name or chanting whatnot, it kind of can be almost relaxing in a sense,” he said. After missing the cut at Torrey Pines in late January, DeChambeau headed over to Saudi Arabia and withdrew after one round. A year ago, when the Masters returned to its usual spot in the spring, DeChambeau turned in another lackluster showing. “I can’t go all-out,” DeChambeau said. “I can’t do any speed training sessions. He didn't play for nearly two months. “Yelling ‘Fore!’ off the tee every time is just not fun." I’ve got to be careful with things and really be efficient and limit the amount of golf balls I can hit.” DeChambeau didn't come close to backing up those bold words. Your worst failures are your best teachers. Most memorably, he lost a ball at No. 3 — the shortest par-4 on the course, and one of the holes where he considered par to be a birdie — and was out of contention before he even got to the weekend.
The former US champion has previously been sidelined with hand and hip problems.
It was probably not one that my doctors recommended, but I’m like, ‘man, this only comes around once a year and I’ve got to give this a go’.” “One of the things that I see from it all is the ability to reach a younger audience, to reach new people that maybe don’t watch golf. “Normally a bone fracture takes four months to probably fully heal, I’m back here in two.

Last year's Masters showed just how hard it is to pick the winner of a golf tournament. Hideki Matsuyama entered off showing some mediocre form and left ...
Thomas is fifth on tour in strokes gained: approach, which is a key statistic every week but even more so at Augusta National. The last seven leaders in approach at the Masters finished first, first, second, third, first, first and eighth for that year’s tournament. Matsuyama last year became the eighth Masters champion out of the past 12 and 12th out of the past 17 who had either a previous green jacket or a top 10 finish on his resume. There are only three former Masters champions in this year’s field whose recent play suggests at least a viable shot at victory: Dustin Johnson (+1600 to win), Jordan Spieth (+2200) and Adam Scott (+5500) Among the players near the top of the odds board with previous top 10s: Jon Rahm (+900), Justin Thomas (+1400), Cameron Smith (+1400), Rory McIlroy (+2000), Xander Schauffele (+2000), Brooks Koepka (+2000), Patrick Cantlay (+2500) and Corey Conners (+5500). All of these golfers have my attention, for now. That’s Scott, the 2013 Masters champion who hasn’t won anywhere since 2020 at Riviera and has just one top 10 at Augusta National since winning a green jacket. Yes, he’s only played in two Masters, finishing T-18 last year and T-19 in 2020, but at some point you have to go with the hot hand, and Scheffler’s are blazing right now.My one worry with Scheffler is that he’s played a whole lot of golf recently, with five rounds in his WGC Match Play triumph, and none of the past four April winners had advanced all that deep into the Match Play tournament that annually precedes the Masters (Tiger Woods, a quarterfinalist in 2019, made the deepest run before winning the Masters). The Australian with the proud, flowing mullet checks a whole lot of boxes. He’s finished inside the top 10 in three of the last four Masters. This could be the year for the 28-year-old Smith.Thomas has always been a little snake-bitten at Augusta National, with a fourth-place finish in 2020 his only top 10. If a Masters rookie wins this year, good for him, but I’m crossing all of this year’s first-timers off my list: Sam Burns, Cameron Davis, Talor Gooch, Lucas Herbert, Garrick Higgo, Harry Higgs, Tom Hoge, K.H. Lee, Min Woo Lee, Guido Migliozzi, Sepp Straka, Cameron Young, Seamus Power, Harold Varner III and J.J. Spaun. There, we’ve cut away another 15 golfers.Repeating as Masters champion is also difficult, and only three golfers have ever done it (Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods). Even finishing near the top of the leader board one year after winning is tough: Of the past 20 defending champions, only four have finished in the top 10 the following year, with four — including Johnson last year — missing the cut entirely. Cross them all off: James Piot, Austin Greaser, Laird Shepherd, Keita Nakajima, Stewart Hagestad and Aaron Jarvis. Six more victims!Of the past 22 Masters winners, 15 entered the tournament ranked in the top 12 of the Official World Golf Ranking. This year’s top 12 entering the tournament: Scottie Scheffler, Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, Cantlay, Smith, Thomas, Johnson, McIlory, Schauffele, Burns and Matsuyama. This eliminates players such as Koepka (17th), Daniel Berger (21st) and Kevin Kisner (27th).Of the past 11 Masters champions, only Matsuyama did not have at least two top-12 stroke-play finishes in the calendar year of the tournament, either on the PGA Tour or the European Tour. Matsuyama’s best calendar-year finish ahead of last year’s win was a tie for 15th. But what if I told you that surprise winners at Augusta National like Matsuyama are rare, and there’s a way to narrow down an already-small field (compared with most other events) to single out which players have the best chance at Masters success?Instead of trying to guess who can win, this exercise will take a look at who most likely cannot win, eliminating their names from betting contention. Another one bites the dust.No amateur ever has won the Masters, and there are six in this year’s field. (I’ll get to Matsuyama in a moment.)As for other past winners in the field, they’re either in middling form or simply past their competitive primes. Steve Palmer's golf tips, best bets & player analysis for The Masters, which starts on Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club.
Only two of the last 21 Masters have been won by a short hitter (Mike Weir in 2003 and Zach Johnson in 2007). Powerhouses are able to attack the small targets with loft in hand. Avoiding three-putts on the dancefloors is hugely challenging given the pace and severity of the undulations. He was a total of 15 under par for his three matches, but Min Woo Lee and Billy Horschel also excelled to take points off the Antwerp man. Course overview Home of the Masters since 1934, Augusta is the only Major venue which is used every season, typically in the spring. There was certainly no disgrace in a share of 55th place from the wrong side of the draw at Sawgrass, then Scheffler again exhibited his steel, calmness and courage by winning the WGC-Match Play last time out. The pick of the Masters outsiders is an enormous talent who may be about to realise his true potential. He has explained how world number one status has not changed his life at all - and that it would also be the case should he acquire a Green Jacket. This is a happy, contented soul, whose only aim was to be a Tour golfer, and there is a nonchalance about the way he is going about his professional business. The Belgian turned 30 in January having doubled his victory total to six on his home circuit, but Stateside success has been elusive. He was unbeaten on his Ryder Cup debut in September, crushing Rahm in the singles. He has no statistical weakness and his form from his last six Majors (4-19-18-8-7-8) shows how comfortable he has become in the biggest arenas. Scheffler has demonstrated the temperament of a champion this year and will surely become a Major winner at some stage. Johnson is cheerful and soon-to-be-married - and he could complete his nuptials as a three-time Major champion.
The time has come for the biggest event in all of golf, so I'm here with my best swing at this round of Tee Time ahead of the 2022 Masters.
Between being the golfer he is, his performance all season and especially his last few finishes, Scottie Scheffler is my pick to win the Masters. Scheffler is the No. 1 golfer in the world right now, and rightfully so. In his last five tournaments of 2022, Scheffler has come out on top and now he’s truly at the top of the (golf) world. Thomas has been very consistent in his last few tournaments, placing 12th and fourth as of late, so the best may be yet to come. Fellow American golfer Justin Thomas has been practicing with Woods lately as the PGA members are close friends and has said that Woods looks good, so we’ll have to take Thomas’ word for it for now and wait until Thursday. Woods was speeding and crashed his SUV, which resulted in severe injuries to his right leg and his rib cage.

Last year’s winner Hideki Matsuyama will look to become only the fourth player to defend the Masters title. A number of green complexes have been altered, most notably the 13th green. Former coach Butch Harmon says it will come down if he feels he is fit to walk the significant hills of Augusta for four days. Woods says it will be a “game-time” decision on whether he plays on Thursday. However, he has practised on the course for the past two days. Harrington is playing in his 16th Masters, while Lowry will be looking to improve his best Masters finish of tied 21st last year. The tournament will run until Sunday afternoon (Sunday night in Ireland).
The 2022 Masters is upon us this week and with it comes all the tradition and pageantry for one of golf's biggest events. From the first arrival down.
Dustin Johnson won the Masters in 2020 and was on hosting duties last year. It included a seafood paella, machango-topped filet mignon and tortillas on the side with ice cream-topped apple empanadas for pudding. The delicious-sounding menu included a seafood bar with lobster and oysters and ‘braai’, a South African barbecue, with lamb chops, steaks, and sausages. Reed, clearly a man with a sweet tooth, put on a host of desserts too with tiramisu, vanilla bean creme brulee, chocolate crunch and praline cheesecake all on the menu. Golf’s greatest sit down in the clubhouse for a meal on the eve of the tournament with the previous years’ champion deciding on the offerings. [Can Hideki Matsuyama challenge?] It depends on the extent of the injury. I believe he has learnt from those comments. Having Tiger here, could help him a little in terms of distracting the media but, saying that, Rory knows what is at stake. And if there is anybody that can navigate this golf course by not having their 'A' game but by just being so strong mentally, it definitely would be Tiger. I think the only expectation Rory McIlroy feels is from himself. Why not this year?

World No. 2 Jon Rahm leads the way at +1100, thanks to his dominant play last year that peaked with his U. S. Open victory.
The 2021 Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama released his dinner menu Tuesday with a lot of Japanese inspired cuisine. Not gonna lie, I'd absolutely crush this meal.
Everyone would be treated to some Honey Gold and Lemon Pepper wings catered by the Wing Guru with a special appearance of banana pudding from Central BBQ. The previous year’s Masters champion sets the menu for all past Masters winners in a Tuesday dinner for the ages. This is a post the Cup has done year in and year out, but let’s review.

Woods has not featured in a top-level event since playing at Augusta National in November 2020, with the former world No 1 unable to compete on the PGA Tour ...
Woods' success in 2019 came 11 years on from his previous major title as he signalled the end of an injury-plagued few years to register a one-shot victory. Woods was initially wheelchair-bound before slowly transitioning to crutches and then walking unaided. Woods fuelled speculation about a major return when he went for a practice round at Augusta last week, before returning to Georgia for more time on the course on Sunday, after which he said he would make "a game-time decision" on whether he would compete.

So we've got another day of nine more holes and then come game time.” Woods flew to Augusta National last Tuesday and played 27 holes – including the par-3 course with his 13-year-old son, Charlie.
