Four weeks later, the same man is the main suspect in a murder investigation. The Czech-born businessman, apparently a spy for both the KGB and MI6, bought the Mirror newspapers in 1987, and this contains the revelation that Ghislaine and her father would miaow at each other like cats. Hannah and Nathan (Nicola Walker and Stephen Mangan) are in the final stages of negotiating their divorce, but when it becomes clear that Nathan has met someone else (a child psychologist played by Sherlock’s Lara Pulver) the split becomes less amicable.

It’s a clever thematic angle for the series, which leaves the drama feeling heightened and more significant – more mature in a way, too, offering the kind of stories you can only tell after spending a few years with characters and becoming more familiar with them over time. She’s a child psychologist with a new book out – about the impact of divorce on families – which she’s quick to mention at any opportunity. Walker and Mangan are great in the scenes they share together, embodying a sort of comfortable but strained chemistry – easy laughter giving way to awkward pauses as twenty years of familiarity between Hannah and Nathan is distorted by a very new dynamic.

See you in court! The return of sex-packed legal drama The Split (The Guardian)

Christie has moved to New York. Nina is now a mother, and in recovery, though she is having an inappropriate affair, because she is Nina. Poor Rose, who isn’t a lawyer and so doesn’t get as much screen time, will, hopefully, find the happiness she deserves, simply for not being as messed up as everyone else. It led to one of the best episodes of the entire series, when Stephen Mangan played out Nathan’s discovery with a sense of slow-dawning horror and humiliation, and Hannah started to wonder if Christie was what she had wanted after all. The houses and flats are covetable, London looks glamorous, and every now and then Anna Chancellor pops up as Melanie, a rival lawyer who almost always ruthlessly out-lawyers the rest of them. Ruth, Hannah and Nina are all in the family business, and help clients to navigate the choppy waters of death, divorce and parental responsibilities every day. The women of the Defoe family – matriarch Ruth and siblings Hannah, Nina and Rose – bring more melodrama to the table than most of their clients. It is tense and almost thriller-esque, as various lies and affairs take place and are uncovered, or almost uncovered, and it is deeply satisfying when justice prevails.

Splitting up is hard to do - The Irish World (The Irish World Newspaper)

Stephen Mangan and Nicola Walker spoke to us about divorce law drama The Split returning to BBC for its third and final series.

“You soon realize it’s the people you’re working with. “I think that’s the job, to understand them and like them. It’s not a stretch.” “What appealed to me (about the show) was my agent phoning and saying there was a script written by Abi Morgan and Sister are making it: Yeah, I’d really like to read that, please. That’s the joy. Nothing’s a surefire thing. “You can shoot this thing from 60 different angles. Sobbing. Or then laughing my head off with him in the back garden. Fine. I can do that. I was desperate to work with those women again. That was very easy.” I have huge empathy for him, but the whole thing is messy.
