House of Maxwell review: BBC true crime docuseries is shocking if ... (The Independent)

Three-parter explores the tangled web of the paranoid Robert Maxwell, his daughter Ghislaine, and later the horrors of Jeffrey Epstein.

Fox suggests that the balance of Maxwell’s mind was disturbed by those echoes of the past, as well as by his imminent financial ruin and disgrace, and that his death was suicide. Ghislaine was convinced he was murdered, one of her friends says, which would mean that the two men she admired most – her father and her one-time lover Epstein – had similarly unresolved deaths. Such was the atmosphere in Maxwell Corp that the widow of finance director Lawrence Guest recalls her husband being advised to take different routes to work to avoid assassination. They were poor farmers in Solotvina, Carpathian Ruthenia, in modern-day Ukraine. We watch the big, expansive Maxwell crumple into tears. But they don’t add that much to the vast and still growing body of Maxwellology that’s already out there. This punter explained that he’d bought a nice but fairly ordinary-looking table lamp, but that when he’d got it home and removed the shade, he had discovered a couple of microphones attached to it.

The widow of one executive describes how her husband was told, following his discovery that funds were missing, to vary his route home from work; it was him or Maxwell, she felt, and on hearing that the monster had drowned, she experienced a relief that even now brings her to tears. A friend of hers appears: Christopher Mason, an Englishman then in Manhattan. When Epstein was 40, Ghislaine asked Mason to write a song for his birthday; performed before six men in black tie, it contained a line about his 24-hour erections. The man didn’t only spy on his employees and biographers, but his wife and children, too. His grand home in Oxford was leased from the council; his tie, towards the end, was spattered with stains. – a glimpse of him on the deck of his yacht hours before he went overboard. House of Maxwell, BBC2, review: A bizarre insight into Ghislaine ... (iNews)

The latest documentary to rake over the Maxwell family history is more than just a quick rehash.

A scoop here was in having access to secret recordings of Mirror executives, who were, for legal reasons, voiced by actors. It’s a story of war heroism, black-marketeering, espionage and, above all, breathtaking reinvention, as the self-styled Captain Bob came to the rescue of the Mirror Group newspapers – whose pension funds he was to plunder to service his spiralling debts. The journalist Tom Bower, whose unauthorised biography was met with a blizzard of Maxwell’s libel writs in 1988, was entertaining on the background of the Czech Jew, born Jan Ludvik Hoch in the remote Carpathian Mountains, his family murdered at Auschwitz.

The documentary lays bare the extent of Maxwell's paranoia in the months leading up to his death - as he bugged the offices of his global media empire and his lavish home in Oxfordshire. In the audio recordings, his senior staff are frustrated at being unable to contact Maxwell for three days while he was sailing off the Canary Islands. One key executives says: "I'm f***ed if I know what he’'s done. In the days after his death, it emerged that Robert had stolen over £440million from the Mirror Group pension fund in a bid to inflate the company's share price and keep his businesses afloat. Having last been seen walking around his yacht in the early hours, the media mogul was reported missing by his crew hours before his naked body was pulled from the sea close to Spain's Canary Islands. The first episode focuses on media tycoon Robert Maxwell, whose death in the most mysterious of circumstances after falling off his yacht triggered the collapse of his publishing empire, which had included The Mirror. While it was previously believed Maxwell died before Ghislaine met Epstein, it is now being claimed in the BBC series that the paedophile was actually employed by the disgraced media mogul to hide the hundreds of millions he stole. "If I say anything about it, I think it is highly unlikely that he would have taken his own life, it wasn't in his makeup or his mentality," Kevin explained. Speaking in tonight's documentary, a former friend of Ghislaine, Vassi Chamberlain, says: "I was in the City and I had some friends who worked on Wall Street during that time and they heard that Jeffrey Epstein and Robert Maxwell had entered into an agreement before Robert Maxwell's death, whereby certain funds had been siphoned off. Colin Barr, the executive producer of the series, adds: £I think we now know for a fact that Robert Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein knew one another before Maxwell died, I think there is no question about that." With the Spanish authorities ruling out foul play and the family insisting he would never take his own life, conspiracy theories abound to this day. Born in Czechoslovakia, the Jewish youngster escaped persecution from the Nazis by fleeing to France during the Second World War. Having lost many of his family in the Holocaust, Robert joined the Czechoslovak army and was decorated after active service in the British Army. After the war was over, Robert stepped into the world of publishing and built up Pergamon Press into a booming publishing house before spending six years as a Labour MP in the 60s.

'Miaow, miaow, miaow.' Inside Robert and Ghislaine Maxwell's toe ... (The Irish Times)

TV review: The House of Maxwell is about a larger-than-life-father and disgraced daughter.

And as Sharp approaches you hear the voices: thousands of inmates venting in anger and misery. The House of Maxwell begins with true crime blogger Scott Sharp walking to the Brooklyn prison at which Ghislaine was detained during her trial. The only flash of humanity is when visiting a Holocaust memorial in Israel, at which the repressed horror of the obliteration of his Jewish family at the hands of the Nazis comes rushing back and he is reduced to tears. Maxwell, born in what is now Ukraine and a former double agent for the KGB and MI5, had become obsessed in his later years with Rupert Murdoch and was determined to usurp him as Britain’s most notorious press baron. And, with the chickens coming home to roost, suddenly he was gone. This latest film about Robert, who drowned mysteriously in 1991, and Ghislaine, who was last year found guilty of sex trafficking charges, seeks to join the dots between larger than-life-father and disgraced daughter.
