Six clubs battling for final two top-four spots in Premier League run-in (BreakingNews.ie)

Arsenal's aspirations of securing Champions League football for next season were dented by Monday evening's comprehensive 3-0 loss at Crystal Palace.

The lowest points tally to secure a top-four finish during the past seven seasons is 66 (2016 and 2020). Bruno Lage’s men would therefore probably require at least six wins from their remaining seven games – which include meetings with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City – to be in genuine contention. Uncertainty continues to cloud Old Trafford as United’s search for a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rumbles on. Aside from Chelsea, West Ham are the only top-four hopefuls juggling interest elsewhere. Arsenal’s recent resurgence was emphatically ended at Selhurst Park. Mikel Arteta is operating with a slim squad and currently has limited options at full-back and up front. Remaining fixtures: Aston Villa (a, April 9); Brighton (h, April 16); Brentford (a, April 23); Leicester (h, April 30); Liverpool (a, May 7); Arsenal (h, May 12); Burnley (h, May 15); Norwich (a, May 22). A five-point buffer on fifth place, plus a game in hand on Tottenham, puts the Blues in a strong position to prevent a calamitous end to a turbulent campaign.

Champions League quarterfinals predictions - The Tartan (CMU The Tartan Online)

Benfica has been a consistent presence in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League, but have not been in real contention for the ...

Of all of the quarterfinals matches, the fixture between Chelsea and Real Madrid will likely have the tightest competition. With their first team fit and coming off of a strong 4-1 win against Freiburg on the weekend, however, Bayern will likely extend their winning streak. Real Madrid has also been performing exceptionally well this season, and currently sit comfortably at the top of the La Liga table. Having won 27 of their 35 matches this season (four losses and four draws), the German giants are looking to repeat their 2019-20 performance and win their sixth UEFA Champions League title. In the 2020-21 season so far, Bayern has not lost a single Champions League fixture, and have only dropped points in their 1-1 draw to Salzburg in the first leg of the round of 16. Liverpool’s record this season is also impressive, having won their last four matches and having not lost an away match since they lost 1-0 to Leicester City last December. In the Champions League this season, Liverpool has won every single one of their fixtures, except for a 1-0 loss to Inter Milan at home earlier last month. In addition, Villareal has never won the UEFA Champions League, and it seems unlikely that that will change this year. The Spanish side will need to play tight defensively and be opportunistic on the offensive in order to secure all three points. If Liverpool is able to minimize mistakes while maintaining possession and is able to capitalize on the chances they get, this match will likely end in their favor. In contrast, Liverpool has been a dominant force in the UEFA Champions League for a significant amount of time, and their most recent title was earned in the 2018-19 season. Benfica is coming into this match fresh off a 3-2 loss to Braga and despite the fact that the match will be held at their own Estádio da Luz, the odds are certainly not in their favor to win the match. After all, they won their two titles over half a century ago, in 1961 and 1962, and have not been able to match that since.

Manchester United’s run of games to come are similar, with games against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all presenting potential problems. Of their seven games left, they face Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City and while they still have a chance, it may be a slim one at that. They still have the advantage over sides around them, with a game in hand that could give them a much-needed three points.

Tuesday's Champions League fixtures feature two of the tournament favourites, but there are no easy games when the competition reaches the quarter-finals.

The home side will need a big performance from Darwin Nunez, who is Benfica’s top scorer in the Champions League this season, having netted four times so far. None of the previous three games ended in a draw, as Guardiola won two and Simeone triumphed in the other. Benfica will need to be efficient going forward, as their 40 per cent possession in the Champions League this season is the lowest of any remaining team, while only Real Madrid (23) have recorded more direct attacks than the Portuguese side.
