Jonjo Shelvey and Fabian Schar return to the Newcastle squad, but there's no place in the starting XI for Bruno Guimaraes after a tiring international break. Bentancur has time on his left, edge of the area, it deflects high for a corner. Allan Saint-Maximin involved already, having won a free kick on the left that came to nothing. Saint-Maximin is back in the action and the ball comes to him straight away. It could feel chilly by the time kick off comes around. Another period of Spurs pressure sees a Kane shot hooked wide of the post inside a crowded penalty area. 15th min: It's very much one way traffic, with Spurs seeing the lion's share of possession so far. Schar stands of the ball and powers it through the wall. It's scrappy in the Spurs box as they don't get it away and Willock looks to have wriggled through on goal briefly, but Romero is across to block the midfielder's shot. Kane manages to hold it up and Spurs get going. Two away losses in quick succession are an ominous sign ahead of their trip to London, now sitting nine points above the drop. This time Emerson Royal came inside, and Kulusevski is given space to cross.
Spurs secured a big three points in the race for fourth with a comfortable victory over Newcastle, strengthening their goal difference in a 5-1 thrashing.
The game was then put to bed in the 63rd minute when Emerson Royal scored his first goal for the club. A neat one-two from Doherty and Kulusevski had freed space for the former to deliver the ball, and Emerson made no mistake from six yards. The Swedish squared it for Son who took a touch and fired home.
Tottenham put five past Newcastle to move ahead of Arsenal on goal difference, albeit the Gunners have two games in hand.
They eventually did score a fifth – for a second time in three home games – as Bergwijn scored two minutes after coming on, slotting home having been sent clear by Lucas Moura. But that was as good as it got for Newcastle as Antonio Conte’s men hit back in style. Five wins from the last six games, inspired by the front three of Harry Kane, Son and Dejan Kulusevski, has boosted hopes of a return to Europe’s top tier and their fate could come down to their home game with Arsenal, which has yet to be rearranged.

Newcastle, on the other hand, come into the game in 14th the following two slender defeats against Chelsea and Everton in their last two Premier League matches. Victorious before last month's international break with a 3-1 triumph over West Ham to make it two league wins on the spin, Antonio Conte's Spurs team need to ensure they maintain their good form in the top-four race. With Arsenal not in action until Monday evening when they travel across the capital to face Crystal Palace, Tottenham can draw level on points with their rivals in fourth and potentially leapfrog them if they win by three goals or more.
Spurs settle back in fourth, at least for now, and puts the pressure on Arsenal.
He was so much more involved and direct with his play than he was in the opening 45. * What was so much fun about this match was how so many fringe or reserve players got in on the action. * The difference between Kane in the first and second halves was night and day. That second ball into the box off the corner was exquisite, and Davies’ header was perfectly placed. * I had serious doubts about Matt Doherty’s efficacy on the left, but he actually did amazingly well. That was Davies’ first goal for Spurs since 2017.

Crucially, the impressive result lifted Tottenham into fourth place on goal difference over arch-rivals Arsenal. Son Heung-Min put the result beyond doubt soon after with a clinical finish, before Emerson Royal hooked home Doherty’s cross to make it four. Tottenham needed to win this game and did so in a manner that suggests the battle for fourth place, or better, is nowhere near cut and dried. It is hard to say for sure that Conte will still be at the club come next season. In fact, Tottenham did not just win, they trampled all over Eddie Howe’s side, turning a contest that was evenly balanced into a rout. Antonio Conte ’s men were then relentless after the break as Matt Doherty and Son Heung-Min found the net before Emerson Royal opened his goal-scoring account for the club.
