In a back and forth encounter, Roscommon defeated Galway by a single point to become division two winners of the Allianz National Football League for 2022.

This put Roscommon ahead and they held on to pick up the win. The Rossies wouldn't be denied however and showed massive resolve to wrestle back control of the game. A cagey first half saw the sides go in at the break all square.

Rob Finnerty restored parity, but Diarmuid Murtagh subsequently supplied the goal that mattered deeply. The Murtagh brothers, Ciaráin and Diarmuid, thumped over points as Roscommon took the lead. By the 20th minute Galway led 0-5 to 0-4, but Roscommon replied by reeling off three points on the spin courtesy of Donie Smith (free), Cian McKeon, and Ciaráin Murtagh.

Diarmuid Murtagh scored a spectacular goal to win Division 2 for Roscommon. Roscommon are Division 2 champions for the 2022 season.

During the final five minutes it looked like the last team with the ball was going to win the game. The forward feigned past the first defender who then pulled up anticipating that a teammate was covering for him. But those who turned up for the game were rewarded for being there.

The sides swapped points in just over a minute after the restart, with Comer slotting one after a pass from John Daly and then at the other end Galway goalkeeper Flaherty did well to tip an effort from McKeon over the bar. Roscommon’s opening five points came from frees and a mark and it was the 26th minute before they landed one from play when Niall Daly — who uniquely ended up marking his namesake Niall Daly of Galway — put Cian McKeon through for a good score and Ciaran Murtagh landed one directly afterwards to lead by 0-07 to 0-05. The star of the show was Galway midfielder Paul Conroy, who rolled back the years with an awesome performance which saw him kick five points from play in the opening half 15 years after he captained them to All-Ireland minor glory at the same venue.
