Did Tommy Shelby Die? Every Death in the 'Peaky Blinders' Finale ... (esquire.com)

Warning: there are massive spoilers below for the final episode of Peaky Blinders. Obviously. So, after all that fretting and hallucinating, Tommy Shelby ...

After so much build-up this season and last, Michael's contribution to season six was to go to jail, piddle about, get out of jail, have sex with his wife, go to an island, mess up an assassination and get shot in the face. "Vengeance is for the Lord" she manages to say before Arthur shoots. The decks are now clear for the film. He's the last link to that season five finale to go though. But sadly, he won't be joined by a fair few people who couldn't quite make it to the end of season six. So, after all that fretting and hallucinating, Tommy Shelby didn't die in the Peaky Blinders finale.

Peaky Blinders Series 6 finale praised by fans (Belfast Telegraph)

After six seasons charting the rise of the Shelby gang, Peaky Blinders has finally ended with an epic feature-length episode.

"It feels very, very different to the rest of the season. This was a beautiful episode with such a poetic ending. One fan overcome with emotion added: “I thought I’d feel distraught and upset but I actually feel so at peace and content. Couldn’t have been a more perfect ending”. It feels like a film – it's a kind of dry run for the feature film," he said. It feels very, very different to anything we've done before.

'Peaky Blinders' Series Finale Recap: Twists, Turns & A Prophecy ... (Deadline)

Peaky Blinders concluded its sixth and final season on BBC One in the UK tonight. Read the recap, but beware spoiliers.

“I’m guessing that all you people decided that the only person who can kill Tommy Shelby is Tommy Shelby himself,” he tells Holford who pleads that Tommy has become a different man, one who could not kill another in cold blood. Back on Miquelon, Tommy and Michael are about to set off to where the opium is stored so that Tommy can collect the $5 million owed to him. Fast-forward one month, and Tommy is living in a caravan parked in a wide-open countryside. Ada is still unaware of Tommy’s diagnosis and is confounded about his plans to go away “for a bit.” When Michael jumps out of the car to retrieve his cigarettes from the bar, things don’t go according to his plan since the bomb has been switched to another car, leaving Tommy to emerge unscathed. By the time people know the truth, I will be gone.” Arthur is finally clean from opium, not having been able to even sit up for several of the season’s earlier episodes, and grabs onto his brother in a long embrace. Meanwhile, Tommy’s plane is landing on Miquelon as IRA operative Captain Swing (Charlene McKenna) and her group — who murdered Polly — are headed to the Garrison to take care of Arthur. No one else is aware of the diagnosis, until Arthur (Paul Anderson) discovers the x-rays and flaps them in Tommy’s face, “I know, brother, I know.” Tommy tells those assembled he has a job for them at family manse Arrow House including removing information about people that “has more value than gold,” bodies that need to be dug up and expensive French wines that should be drunk. Lizzie tells Tommy she is leaving him and declares, “You are cursed, Tommy… A curse never to be lifted.” And again, Michael swears, “I will take revenge on Tommy Shelby” whom he blames for Aunt Polly’s death at the end of Season 5. Throughout this season, we’ve been reminded of the words of Aunt Polly (the late Helen McCrory) who told Tommy in Season 5, “There will be a war.

Peaky Blinders season 6 finale – the biggest unanswered questions ... (digitalspy.com)

Peaky Blinders series 6 finale 'Lock and Key' ended the TV show, but Tommy Shelby and co have plenty of unanswered questions from across the show's history.

When she appeared in the season five finale protesting Oswald Mosley's fascist regime, she even appeared to have the potential to come into the fold more prominently in season six. I don't want to be doing Peaky until my mid-to-late 20s, just because I reckon in the future that would be a hindrance for me. I mean, I would go back in a heartbeat [if asked], because I just love it so much." The Peaky Blinders are notorious in Birmingham. Isiah and Duke trick Finn and Billy Grade into attending a creepy party at Tommy's abandoned house – it turns out there is no party, but instead it's a ruse to kill Billy for being the 'Black Cat' informant inside the organisation. I don't want to tarnish the lovely painting that has been painted by Cillian and the older gents and Steven [Knight] himself. As a reminder, it was him that let slip about Oswald Mosley's assassination attempt in the series five finale, information Billy passed onto the IRA and Captain Swing, leading to the deaths of numerous key Shelby gang members. Duke grabs back the gun and shoots Billy Grade dead, Finn is told he's no longer a Shelby family member, and Finn screams that he'll come after Duke. But in the finale, he is nowhere to be seen. However, Steven Knight hinted to Metro.co.uk that the actor would have a role in the Peaky Blinders movie. For someone who didn't even exist in the world of Peaky Blinders three episodes ago, Duke Shelby (Conrad Khan) has certainly made himself at home pretty quickly. At the time he said it, it appeared like he was making his big goodbye because Tommy was convinced he was dying.

'Peaky Blinders' season 6 finale recap: the last orders are in (NME.com)

Does Tommy Shelby meet his end in the last ever episode of 'Peaky Blinders'? We finally found out in the beautifully written 'Lock and Key'

Just one of the lives – remember he once lived a peaceful existence away and unknowing of the Shelbys – ruined by coming into contact with Tom. Still, at least he got to roll around with glamorous Gina (Anya Taylor-Joy) and sit smoking in pyjamas for a bit. The image of Arthur in Small Heath, mask on, striding through yellow plumes of mustard gas, back in France – at least in his mind – reviving Captain Swing just so he could cast judgement and then avenge Polly’s death, goes to the top of the pile as one of the series most iconic moments. Before the meat, the trimmings, and the aforementioned Shelby’s meeting with Alfie in Newfoundland – much like their pairing in the Camden cellar earlier in the season – was as delicious a union as Peaky Blinders has ever served up. Duke might be new to the fold, but he encapsulated more of the Shelby spirit in a few short scenes than the hapless Finn ever did. For months now, creator Steven Knight has been describing season six as not the beginning of the end, but the “end of the beginning”. Which makes the beautifully written feature-length end to the main series – with future films and character spin-offs planned – all the more worthy of acclaim. Well, the ostracisation of Finn (Harry Kirton) – easily the most noteworthy moment for the character since he joined us in season two – sets up a feud with Duke that will surely form the crux of that upcoming film.

Peaky Blinders finale: How it ended for Tommy Shelby and co (Irish Examiner)

After six seasons the story of Cillian Murphy's character came to conclusion in an 80-minute nail-biter.

In an interview with Empire magazine in January, Knight said: "I think of this sixth series as the end of the beginning." Plus there was a welcome return of fan-favourite Alfie Solomon, played by the excellent Tom Hardy, and viewers were delighted by Johnny Dogs’ sleight of hand with the Canadian car bomb, though his line that he was off to “look at the fog” while Tommy dealt with Michael will surely become an iconic line – its already getting the meme treatment on Twitter. In cahoots with the Boston Irish, he arranges to have a bomb placed in the car he is to share with Tommy to collect the $5 million owed to Shelby. However, he is thwarted by Johnny Dogs, who switches the bomb and places it in the other car, killing his co-conspirators. While Michael was fighting to become the new king of the family across the pond, Erasmus Shelby laid claim to the title of Duke in his absence and surely set up another compelling family feud for a future movie or spin-off series. Tommy’s fierce sister Ada is not present for much of the final episode, appearing towards the end during an outdoor dinner where Tommy says his goodbyes. He realises his doctor is involved with fascist Oswald Mosely and lied about Tommy’s illness in the hope that the Peaky Blinder would choose to end his life on his own terms: after all, only Tommy Shelby could kill Tommy Shelby. He leaves his burning gypsy caravan behind, presumably to reclaim his life, and the series ends as it began, with Tommy cutting a striking figure on horseback.

Peaky Blinders recap: series six finale – a thrumming, electrifying ... (The Guardian)

The gangster saga bows out in a blaze of glory, giving all our fan favourites their moment in the sun … and leaving plenty of feuds for the future.

You’ve must live, daddy.” Relighting his campfire, Tommy spotted a picture of Mosley’s wedding in a charred newspaper – and a familiar face among the guests: physician Dr Holford (Aneurin Barnard), alongside the female colleague he’d recommended for a second opinion. He rode off into the sunset a free man – “back where we began: horses and caravans, vagabonds and thieves”. See you on the silver screen, Tom. Neither was there any comeuppance for fascist Boston boss Jack Nelson (James Frecheville) – although we can assume the Jewish mob will put paid to him. Mitford’s fiancé Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) interrupted in the nick of time, handing Tommy an invitation to the couple’s wedding in Berlin – at which the Führer himself would be in attendance. Tommy took himself off to die in a gypsy wagon, held a revolver to his head (again) – and had a magical vision of deceased daughter Ruby (Orla McDonagh) telling him: “You’re not even sick. Except Tommy had deduced that Billy Grade (Emmett J Scanlan) was the “black cat” traitor and that youngest brother Finn (Harry Kirton) was equally untrustworthy. Dear, dependable Curly (Ian Peck) proved his worth once more and got a Tommy cuddle of gratitude. Too many bad memories and a desire to burn down his ill-gotten gains meant Tommy wanted his country pile Arrow House emptied, razed to the ground and replaced by social housing. Charlie Strong (Ned Dennehy) acted as a decoy, luring Laura “Captain Swing” McKee (Charlene McKenna) and her soldiers into a trap. The final straw was sleeping with the enemy, Diana Mitford (Amber Anderson). Cue cheers from sofas as good ole Johnny Dogs (Packy Lee) popped up to tell Tommy: “I switched the ticker like you said, Tom.” Always one step ahead. Tommy flew (how new-fangled) to the smugglers’ haven of Miquelon Island to collect the $5m payment for his opium shipment.

Peaky Blinders Season 6 Finale Review: Lock and Key | Den of Geek (Den of Geek)

Peaky Blinders says goodbye without really saying goodbye in a minor-key finale that turns explosive, with a thrilling twist. Spoilers.

For six episodes, creator Steven Knight told us with every trick going that Tommy Shelby – god, man, ghost – was moving towards death, and then in a swerve worthy of Tommy himself, instead gave the character a new lease on life. Ghost-Ruby appeared in a vision to stop Tommy from pulling that trigger and to direct him towards the evidence that Dr Holford was a Mosley plant all along. He’d bribed the French barman and smuggler in episode one, made the deal to sell his opium to Alfie back in episode two, learned from Gina that Michael was out for his blood in episode four, and fed Grade the false info in this finale. The British Union of Fascists was banned, and the pair never achieved the power once thought inevitable. Despite her swagger being showcased earlier in the season, Sophie Rundle’s Ada sadly didn’t get much of a look-in, but Paul Anderson and Cillian Murphy killed it in their scenes as Arthur and Tommy. This whole season has been a horror show in a minor key, and their performances have shown utter commitment to telling this story with real humanity. It was all a scheme to hasten Tommy’s inevitable suicide and clear him away in time for the new world order. The second had unpredictability and artily unsettling images, from the vulnerable child who’d wandered into the middle of the shoot-out to the otherworldly sight of Arthur and co. Then a plot by his enemies presented him with a rare opportunity to ride for the hills and leave it all behind. Duke’s transformation from a nature-lover to a general in the Peaky Blinders army was similarly underexplored. That house once represented his naïve attempt to join the aristocracy; blowing it up reconnected Tommy with his Communist youth and Romany heritage, as well as fulfilling Lizzie’s wish from the last episode. The first had sustained tension from the moment the bag containing the explosive appeared on screen to the moment of detonation. He escaped it all – the fascists and the fake diagnosis and his family and himself.

Peaky Blinders: What's next? Everything to know about a potential ... (goodtoknow)

Will there be a Peaky Blinders season 7? With season 6 ending, we've got everything you need to know about the future of the hit BBC drama.

He said: “We’ve talked to Cillian Murphy and he’s all for it, and the rest of the principal cast are in for it.” The final shot of the episode saw Tommy riding away from his burning funeral trailer, which was set on fire by Curly, who believed Tommy to be dead. The final episode was a whopping 81 minutes long, much to the delight of Peaky fans. Tommy said goodbye to his family and handed over everything to Ada. But then, while standing in a traditional gypsy funeral trailer preparing to shoot himself, the ghost of his dead daughter, Ruby, appeared. He said: “There’s so many people, so many great actors, that we are already in conversation with for the film. We also know that Steven hopes to ‘redeem’ Cillian Murphy’s character, Tommy Shelby, by the end of the story. The first episode of the season aired on BBC One on 27 February 2022, with the much anticipated finale airing on 3 April 2022. However, Steven Knight has revealed that the Peaky Blinders film will be set during the Second World War. He told Metro.co.uk in February: “I know exactly what’s going to happen. When anything happened in the rest of the series [6], I wanted people to think, ‘What would Polly say?’ It’s like a family when someone passes away, their opinion remains in the house. He said: “The original intention was to do seven series, but COVID has stolen a year from us. But in 2021, he explained how this had changed due mainly to the pandemic – but also the death of Helen McCrory, who played Polly Gray in the series. So with the potential for more action from the Shelby clan, the question many viewers are asking now is; will there be a Peaky Blinders season 7?

Peaky Blinders Ending Explained: Finn, the Feature Film, Dr Holford ... (Den of Geek)

Peaky Blinders ended (for now) with a twist-filled finale. With major spoilers, we break down how it leaves things for the follow-up feature film.

After making the financial arrangements to look after his family, dynamiting his house and holding a farewell banquet in the woods, Tommy went on the road alone in a wagon to prepare for death. In the photograph and on the guest list? After Tommy raised his toast to the family and choked up telling Charles to look after Lizzie and that he wanted him to be “the best…”, he whispered something in Duke’s (newly exposed thanks to his Peaky Blinders haircut) ear. Arthur knew about the diagnosis and Tommy instructed him that when it was time, he would give Arthur the wagon’s location so that he, Charlie and Curly could burn his body and “rake through the ashes for silver and gold.” Arthur and co. He took off his wedding ring and pocket watch and left them in the wagon with photographs of Grace, Polly, John, Ruby and Lizzie and Charles, before loading a gun with a bullet engraved with his name and holding it to his head. Duke then shot Billy Grade in the head and told Finn he was no longer a member of this Shelby family, by order of the Peaky fucking Blinders. Finn left, swearing revenge on Duke, which is sure to come up in the forthcoming Peaky Blinders feature film. Mosley, Holford, and fellow fascist Dr Helen Rutherford conspired to convince Tommy that he was dying of an incurable disease, as a way to push him towards taking his own life. A Caryn Mandabach production that airs on the BBC and Netflix, it’s not yet confirmed where the film will debut, but it’s likely to have a multi-platform release, with a limited cinema run plus a BBC One/BBC iPlayer and Netflix airing. That was a brand new character for the finale named ‘Lazarus’ – an apt biblical name relating to returning from the dead. After Jack Nelson violently forced Billy Grade into becoming an informant for his operation, somehow Tommy found out (possibly because Billy was passing information to Gina Gray, whom Tommy had surveilled and was blackmailing over her adultery with Oswald Mosley). Tommy called a meeting at the Garrison in order to feed Billy false information to lure the IRA into a trap. At Arrow House, Duke and Isaiah lured Billy and Finn into the kitchen where they told Finn to shoot Billy for being a traitor on pain of being exiled from the family. Tommy believed he was travelling to his death, but had a surprise on the way.

'Peaky Blinders' Creator Steven Knight On Series Finale & How It ... (Deadline)

EXCLUSIVE: SPOILER ALERT: This post contains details about the series finale of Peaky Blinders...: Peaky Blinders, the award-winning, fan-adored period ...

The way I like to think of it is that he began the series as dead inside, as were a lot of people after World War I, and then slowly he sort of thawed out. They book the theater and then say,”right let’s make it “and the theater is booked and people have bought tickets and you think, “right, we better do this.” But we’re in very good hands. KNIGHT: At the beginning, when he first shot one of the first episodes he ad libbed a lot – he doesn’t do that anymore, which is good. It’s the consequence of it entering the culture in lots of different countries and people dressing like it and having tattoos like it and all of that. But all of that comes back to Birmingham… and just the fact that people tell me, if they’re from Birmingham and when they go abroad, people immediately say ‘Peaky Blinders.’ I just think it’s really great. KNIGHT: Yeah, because in reality the first world war generation by the time the second world war is in terms of age as it was perceived in those days, and what I want to do is have this new generation come through. KNIGHT: Well, what I want to do — that’s the implication — but when we find him during World War II, is he a good man? KNIGHT: The thing is that when I’m writing anything, but particularly Peaky, I tend to not have a plan except something very, very broad. If you don’t start with a rigid beginning middle and end, which I don’t, and just let it go, somehow you find out what’s going to happen next. Whether it be Godfather references like Michael getting shot in the eye and an overall settling of accounts, or even an Odessa Steps callback? I think a lot of people when it’s the last series they sort of fold their arms and say “prove that you’re not gonna do what other series have done” and so there is sort of an expectation, but I think it’s passed that with flying colors. Not just the reviews, again which I don’t normally do, I’ve been looing at what people are saying on the internet and it’s absolutely amazing.

Peaky Blinders final episode: Just when Cillian Murphy seemed free ... (The Irish Times)

Contains spoilers: The soggy farewell season has unspooled like a series of baroque pop videos.

The cult of Peaky Blinders also has the potential to typecast Murphy as a charismatic baddy skating by and nothing but grumpy charm. Murphy, for his part, will no doubt enjoy his time away from Tommy, playing Robert Oppenheimer and – with luck – featuring in the future awards season conversation. Steven Knight, series creator and show-runner, tries to have it both ways by portraying the murderous Shelby as a working-class hero. You can easily picture Murphy’s Bond driving a jet-fuelled Aston Martin along the Carrigrohane Straight, tangling with henchman atop the County Hall and then heading off to an exotic playground for the mega-rich such as Kinsale. And with Tommy restored to his full powers in Sunday night’s finale, it’s unthinkable Murphy won’t feature. Shelby had been diagnosed earlier in the series with a terminal brain tumour.

Will the Peaky Blinders film see Tom Holland join Cillian Murphy? (British GQ)

Show creator Steven Knight has confirmed that there won't be another season, but a Peaky Blinders film is very much on the way.

“It’s also the end of empire: we enter the Second World War and by the end of it, there is no empire, really. "It will now go into and beyond the Second World War. Because I just think the energy that is out there in the world for this, I want to keep it going, and I want to see how this can progress beyond that.” This might be indicative, too, of further branches planned to sprout for the Peaky storytelling tree. But Knight is seemingly keen to correct another casting fumble: speaking at the red carpet premiere for Peaky season six, he said they'd love to “have him” for the movie “if he wants to come back”. No kidding. It's obviously early days, so specific plot details are few and far between, but Knight has confirmed that a script is in the works. She told Red Magazine in 2019: “I've never got [a part in Peaky]. Although work is regular, it doesn't always go my way.” Nevertheless, Knight told Metro that he'd “love” to have McClure in the movie: “We will put her in the film if she'll do it!” But now he hasn't kicked the bucket, it's hard to foresee how the Blinders story could be concluded without Tommy at the helm.
