Finglas shooting: Dublin councillor warns weapons are 'easy ... (Sunday World)

Local councillors are calling for “urgent attention” after a man in his 20s was shot dead in Finglas this morning.

“We’ve never had less community policing in the area and it’s all playing into the increase in crime in the area. Ms Reilly said: “I think it’s just shocking and it’s causing a lot of concern in the community. There’s a lot of very young men particularly getting caught up in it. “I think it’s really important that the Garda Commissioner and the Minister for Justice allocate the correct resources in dealing with these kinds of crime-related shootings. “It’s telling that there’s a shortage of gardaí in the area and violent crimes are increasing. Fianna Fáil councillor Briege Mac Oscar said that the “violent death” shows that the gangland situation in Finglas is “worsening” while independent councillor Noeleen Reilly said that the lack of garda resources in the area is to blame for the increase in crime.

First killing in Finglas feud prompts fears of worsening gang violence (The Irish Times)

Mr Whelan was spotted nearby by members of the rival gang and pursued onto Deanstown Avenue and shot dead by his rivals. Gardaí suspect he was killed because ...

Gardaí believe the violence has been stoked by the fact those involved are members of rival drugs gangs but that some of the young teenagers involved have engaged in the violence for recreational reasons. Mr Whelan was well known to gardaí for involvement in the drugs trade in the Finglas area from the time he was a teenager. When he was still in his teens, gardaí seized almost €30,000 in cash from him. That operation last month followed beatings and a number of serious attacks on houses across Finglas; including several shootings and a grenade attack. That man is now a prime target for the specialist Garda units working to combat organised crime. In the early hours of Sunday morning, and in an apparent revenge attack for the earlier shooting, a petrol bomb was thrown at a property on the Deanstown estate.
