'Lucky' - National media agree after Leicester City's draw at Man Utd (Leicestershire Live)

Leicester City's James Justin (left) and Manchester United's Anthony Elanga battle for the ball during the Premier League match at Old Trafford.

Much of the first-half passed by without anything meaningful to note, both sides feeling the other out in what was a cagey opening half hour. In the end we are not happy with the result but the second half was OK.” The second half was better, we were struggling to find rhythm in the first half, possibly because of the international break. The first half performance was particularly dire with Rangnick opting for the unlikely strikeforce of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, which he tried unsuccessfully against Manchester City and was obliged to dismantle at half-time on this occasion. Andre Marriner disallowed the goal on review and Brendan Rodgers put his face in his hands, knowing that there would seldom have been a better chance to win at Old Trafford. With 10 minutes left Raphaël Varane got himself into a pickle, Kelechi Iheanacho burgled him and passed to James Maddison who made it 2-1.

Maguire's welcome, Fletcher's fan row, Carrick returns and Man ... (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester United failed to bridge the gap on the top four after playing out a 1-1 draw with Leicester City at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

After gliding past three Foxes defenders, Rashford was poised to pull the trigger from the right side of the penalty area, only for Anthony Elanga to get in his way, touch the ball and see the attack flagged offside. On Friday, speaking in his pre-match press conference, Ralf Rangnick backed Maguire and made a strong defence for him, stressing how important he is to the club and the squad. Former United midfielder Michael Carrick was in attendance, soaking up the action as nothing more than a spectator. That is because Maddison saw a goal chalked off by VAR for a foul committed by Iheanacho on Raphael Varane in the build-up. The second half certainly proved to be more entertaining than the 45 minutes that proceeded it, but there was still a few moments that you might have missed throughout the contest. However, that was as good as it got for United - and they could have lost it.

Fred rescues point for Man Utd against Leicester (BBC Sport)

Manchester United stay sixth as Fred's equaliser saves a point against Leicester but the result hits their Champions League hopes.

But just as space opened up to shoot, an offside Anthony Elanga got in his way and the chance was gone. Deep into stoppage time, he picked the ball up just outside the box and drove at the Leicester defence. At the moment though, he just needs to deliver.

22nd min: Shaw lifts the ball into the area, deep from the left, and it finds Pogba just past the penalty spot. 28th min: The best chance of the game so far falls to Fernandes. Fofana gives it away to Fred and is caught out of position, as Fernandes finds himself clean through on goal. Harvey Barnes has had a couple of shots from outside the area in quick succession, but neither looked likely to trouble De Gea's goal. As he approached midfield, he drove the ball out to Pogba on the right hand side. He looks to find Dewsbury-Hall in the area, but United had bodies back and Varane cut it out. De Gea gets something on it, but it's too weak, and it nestles in the back of the net. Fred gets on the end of the loose ball and, on the edge of the area, passed centrally to Fernandes. Fernandes fires low, to the 'keeper's right. The Leicester corner is headed clear and United look to be on the counter. Fofana rises well and heads the ball towards the corner, but De Gea impressively manages to get a hand to it and palm the ball away. De Gea is out and Iheanacho, from close to goal and a very tight angle, tries to lift the ball over the 'keeper. It's a strange choice of finish and never looked like ending in a goal. The ball is fired into Iheanacho on the edge of the area. It almost feels like Leicester are at home and United are the visitors.

“I thought he was excellent. He is doing an impressive job so far, and in the 1-1 draw with Man United he had a pass completion rate of 94 per cent, while he made 10 ball recoveries, with the hosts’ goalscorer Fred the only player to register more. But manager Brendan Rodgers provided good news in his post-match press conference, saying Mendy was just dealing with cramp.

Man Utd declared their season over with eight games still to play after another poor performance against Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Maguire has long been considered a left-sided centre back and he's spent virtually all of his United career in that role, but against his former club he was switched with Raphael Varane. The former Real Madrid man moved to the left, forming a link with Luke Shaw on that side of the pitch, and Maguire switched to the right. When he made his comeback in the reserve fixture in October and scored off the bench it felt he was one of the few positives, but very little has gone right for him since. Most of the Harry Maguire spotlight at Old Trafford was on the support he was always going to receive from the United fans, but there was a much more interesting tactical switch on the pitch. Rangnick will point to the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani as a significant impediment to his attacking options, but for all the urgency there was never a sense that a goal was coming. With Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo unavailable Rashford would have felt a certain starter against Leicester. Instead, he found himself on the bench, behind a teenager on the wing and a midfielder as a false nine.

Fofana was forced to walk a tightrope for much of the game after being cautioned for a clumsy tackle on Anthony Elanga early on. Should both Spurs and Arsenal triumph, it may well spend the end of United’s hopes of Champions League qualification after dropping more points at home to Leicester. Maguire made a vital intervention early on in the second-half to thwart a promising Foxes move. It forced United's midfield to constantly look out on the flanks for the likes of Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga as outlets. United were forced to go without their iconic number seven against the Foxes as Cristiano Ronaldo was ruled out of the contest with illness. It was a similar story for Maddison, who gave United plenty of warnings of what was to come with some delightful crosses before the best was saved for his assist.
