The counting of votes in the Trinity College Seanad by-election has entered a fifth count with two candidates eliminated.

The byelection is being held to fill the vacancy in the Seanad caused by current Labour leader Ivana Bacik being elected to the Dáil.
The elimination of Ms Bacik’s former staffer Ursula Quill from the race is likely to prove key, with her votes to set up the final stages. The current leader is followed by Dublin's former Lord Mayor, Hazel Chu of the Green Party, with psychologist Maureen Gaffney a close third. In fourth position is former Irish rugby star Hugo MacNeill, who topped the poll after the first count on Wednesday with 2,068 votes.

Security analyst Tom Clonan is the country's newest Senator as he has been deemed elected on the final count of the Seanad Trinity by election this evening.
He is credited for exposing sexual abuse in the Defence Forces in 2000 while completing a PhD as a serving member of the forces, when he uncovered a culture of discrimination, harassment, bullying, sexual harassment and sexual assault directed at female members. Dr Clonan had a total of 5,358 votes on the final count and Dr Gaffney had 5,198 votes. After benefiting from transfers, Cllr Chu was later eliminated and Mr Clonan went on to win the seat on the 16th and final count.

Mr Clonan will join Senators Lynn Ruane and David Norris in representing the Dublin university. The pair had taken 1,947 and 1,882 first preferences, respectively. Clonan, a security analyst and army whistleblower, has gathered 2,332 votes so far, compared to MacNeill’s 2,290. The scattered nature of the electorate proved difficult for canvassing, with candidates reporting that many did not live at the addresses they had registered with Academic Registry. The total poll of 13,434 of an electorate of nearly 68,000 Trinity graduates represents a turnout of just under 20 per cent, lower than the 2020 race which had a turnout of approximately 23.1 per cent.

The result amounts to a loss of a Labour seat and will be a disappointment to Ms Bacik who assumed the leadership of the party just last week. Due to a long-standing prior commitment in Cork Mr Clonan was not in attendance to hear president and provost of the university Linda Doyle announce the final result shortly before 9.30pm.
