How they rated: Ireland vs Lithuania (Irish Examiner)

Dara O'Shea 6 · John Egan 7 · Nathan Collins 7 · Matt Doherty 7 · Conor Hourihane 6 · Alan Browne 6 · Ryan Manning 7 · Will Keane 5.

Then popped up with his first goal in front of the Irish faithful in the 97th minute. Plenty of endeavour by the West Brom attacker on the left of the front three. The star man against Belgium switched to the right of the front three as Keane went central. A first start in a green jersey for the Burnley defender on the left of the right side of the centre halves. With James McClean dropping down to the bench it was an opportunity for the Swansea player at left-wing back. The flag went up again on 72 to thwart the Rotherham striker. With Josh Cullen only selected amongst the subs, Hourihane got the chance in the middle of the park for a 33rd Irish appearance. Crowded out for a 68th minute chance in the box. Having only recently made his return to club action with West Brom, the defender slotted in on the left of the back-three. The 23-year-old made a welcome return to the fold in his first Irish appearance since fracturing an ankle against Portugal in September 2021 for his 11th cap. Currently suspended for his club, it was only a second cap for the 20-year-old. The Liverpool custodian retained his place between the posts after starting against Belgium. A virtual spectator in the first 45 minutes as Lithuania lacked any attacking intent.

He has been a breath of fresh air, on and off the pitch. Lithuania are ranked 137th in the world, 88 places below their hosts, and finished bottom of their World Cup qualifying group with just three points. "Another goal on Saturday will only do him the world of good for his confidence. He said: "The Ireland team that I played in was very well organised, very difficult to break down. "There was a big reliance on the technical players with most ability, in an attacking sense. You've got to take it on the chin.

A brief history of Republic of Ireland v Lithuania (RTE.ie)

Tuesday night's meeting between the Republic of Ireland and Lithuania will be the fifth time the two countries have collided, and though the Boys in Green ...

As mentioned, Ireland had to win this away tie and they did - but it wasn't easy. This was an Irish team in transition, but better was expected than the fare served up here and McCarthy got a lot of stick post-game. Things got hairy though six minutes into the second half when Tomas Ziukas volleyed home the equaliser through a crowd of Irishmen. With Lithuania refusing to revert from a defensive gameplan, Ireland toiled. "That was probably the worst performance we've had for a long time," Jack Charlton said after this one. But they do have form when it comes to making life awkward for Ireland.

Ireland v Lithuania: Talking points from a dramatic Aviva win (Pundit Arena)

Ireland claimed the latest of late wins at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday night, as they saw off Lithuania with the last kick of the game.

Not that it was much of a surprise, but Lithuania came into the Aviva Stadium with little expected of them, and they duly obliged. But Ireland eventually ground them down having dominated possession, and play, with Parrott striking with the latest of late goals. Troy Parrott wins it for the Republic of Ireland in the 97th minute! It was no secret that Lithuania were going to provide Ireland with a new test, and it looked as if Ireland would struggle to come through it. โ€” FAIreland โšฝ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช (@FAIreland)March 29, 2022 Ireland claimed the latest of late wins at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday night, as they saw off Lithuania with the last kick of the game.

As it happened: Ireland v Lithuania, international friendly (The42)

A late, great Troy Parrott goal ensured it finished 1-0 at the Aviva Stadium.

42 mins: Ireland are enjoying so much of the ball, but struggling in the final third. He tries to keep a wayward cross-field ball from going over the sideline, but instead knocks it out for a corner. Ogbeneโ€™s pace and power is causing Lithuania problems, and he shows lovely footwork down the right to win a corner. 14 mins: Ireland are enjoying the lionsโ€™ share of possession here, as expected, getting their formations going and patient in their build-up. Nothing comes off it, thankfully for Ireland, but Lithuania have come into the game a little more in recent minutes. 30 mins: Ireland have gone a little sloppy and disjointed, getting swallowed up going forward. 5 mins: A positive start here at the Aviva, with Ireland playing the ball around nicely. A goal before half time would have them in good stead. Lithuania clear it directly into his path, and he lets fly from well outside the box. No success from that one, but they have another after โ€” just about. The fans like it, with cheers of โ€˜Keano, Keanoโ€™ ringing out. Will Keane has just got a talking to, throwing his weight around up top and making his presence felt.
