In memoriam: Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins // The Observer (Observer Online)

Last Saturday morning, when I opened my Instagram and started routinely exploring my feed, I abruptly stopped scrolling. My brain registered “Foo Fighters ...

At the concert before his passing, Lollapalooza Brazil, Hawkins sang “Somebody to Love” again. Classic songs and new material came together to form a collage of their music, moments of my life and theirs intertwined. True to every photo and video I had seen through the years, Hawkins drummed furiously with his trademark smile radiating to where I stood in the crowd. Their seventh studio album, “Wasting Light” was the first album I had on my hot pink iPod Nano. When I got my first locker in 6th grade, I taped a photo of the Foo Fighters on the door. It was at these festivals that their relationship began, and the two became, as Grohl puts it, “a musical twin flame.” Dave Grohl, before forming the Foo Fighters, played drums for Nirvana, one of the most iconic bands of the 1990s.

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and the sad appeal of self ... (The Globe and Mail)

Taking curves faster than we would ever dare, drummers are music's Formula 1 drivers, living at an unhealthy velocity.

Hawkins himself told Kerrang! magazine in 2019 that he had bought into the “live hard and fast, die young” myth. Historically, there’s a sexiness to the tragic demise of rock stars. And the expiry dates of rocks stars are different from the rest of ours. “The secret life of the touring drummer is that they burn three times the calories per day that everybody else does, but they also keep up in the party and sleeplessness departments,” Workman says. A rock star who embraced the hedonistic lifestyle offered to him on a platter, he was also known for gestures of sincere, simple humanness. According to a statement from the Colombia Attorney General’s Office, preliminary toxicological tests showed a variety of psychoactive substances and medicines in Hawkins’s system.
